Seven Days in Bali: First-Timer Itinerary With Two Bases

Three nights inland, three by the sea, and one hotel move that earns its place.

7 days · 6 nightsUbud + SanurOne hotel change
An original AI-generated editorial illustration of Bali’s inland landscape, not a documentary photograph.

Seven days in Bali work best when you decide what to leave out. For a first visit, split six nights equally between Ubud and Sanur: start with art, temples and countryside, then finish with coastal walks and time to unwind. Ubud provides the inland cultural setting; Sanur gives you a beachfront base with a promenade and restaurants close at hand. [1] [2]

This plan counts the day you arrive in Bali as day one and the day you leave as day seven. International flying days before arrival are additional. It suits travellers who want variety without changing hotels every other morning; nightlife and serious surfing are not its organising priorities.

Stay split

3 nights Ubud + 3 nights Sanur; 6 hotel nights in total.

Usable time

4 full days without a flight or hotel change, plus the flexible parts of arrival and transfer days.

Spending model

IDR 17.94 million for two, including a 15% reserve; international flights excluded.

Main trade-off

You gain a calmer first visit by leaving distant corners of the island out.

The arithmetic matters: seven days do not give you seven unrestricted sightseeing days. Removing arrival, departure and the one moving day leaves four full days. Adding a third base would take a hotel change out of that small allowance. That is the reason for two bases, rather than a claim that these are the only worthwhile places in Bali.

Keep the hotel sequence fixed while leaving individual activities movable. Enter the six actual hotel nights in the Trip Itinerary Planner before booking; check your international flight’s local arrival date carefully.

Six nights, two bases. Ubud: 3 nights — Days 1–3 · art, temple and countryside; Move south: Day 4 — Treat packing, transfer and check-in as half a day; Sanur: 3 nights — Days 4–6 · coast and an optional southern outing; Fly home: Day 7 — Protect the airport transfer.

Choose locations that make two bases work

Ubud: convenience first, secluded views second

For three nights, prioritise easy access to the part of Ubud where you expect to eat and spend your evenings. A countryside villa can be lovely, but its transport arrangements become part of every outing. Compare the exact map pin, access road, stairs and any hotel shuttle timetable before paying. The tourism board distinguishes central accommodation from quieter stays among the surrounding greenery. [1]

A central or near-central room is the simpler default for this itinerary. Ask whether a car can reach reception with your luggage, whether neighbouring venues create evening noise and whether breakfast is available before your planned excursion.

Sanur: book the beach access you actually want

Choose a room on the seaward side of the main bypass, with a practical walking route to the beachfront. Sanur’s promenade and shoreline restaurants make it useful for gentle, largely local days. A listing described as “Sanur” can still require transport to the beach, so judge the door-to-promenade journey rather than the area label. [2]

Use Bali accommodation on Agoda and Bali stays on Booking.com to compare your shortlisted Ubud and Sanur stays, then check the final price, taxes, cancellation deadline and room type. These are accommodation searches, not quotes for a particular hotel or date. If you need reliable swimming regardless of tide or sea conditions, choose a hotel pool as well.

Days one to three: settle into Ubud

Day one: arrive without a sightseeing deadline

Arrange an airport pickup that monitors your flight and clearly states its meeting point and waiting policy. Do not book a paid activity on the arrival evening. Immigration, bags, the drive and check-in can use much more of the day than the flight schedule suggests. Eat near your hotel, buy water and save the first proper outing for tomorrow.

If your flight lands very late, a direct journey to Ubud may be an unattractive start. The clean two-base alternative is to reverse the order: Sanur first, Ubud second. That gives you a shorter initial road leg but requires a more generous airport transfer plan on departure day.

Day two: art and a small slice of town

Make ARMA your main cultural visit: its permanent collection covers Balinese, Indonesian and international artists, and the institution also runs cultural activities. Check the current programme if a workshop or performance matters to you. [3] Allow a relaxed morning including the journey, then have lunch nearby instead of crossing town repeatedly.

Use the afternoon for the market and central streets, or choose a short countryside walk in suitable weather. A museum, lunch and one modest afternoon plan are sufficient. For readers more interested in making than viewing, replace the museum visit with a prebooked creative workshop; do not simply bolt it onto the same day.

Day three: a temple and countryside, with room to stop

Arrange one outing towards Tampaksiring, with Tirta Empul as the main visit and a rice-field stop as the optional second element. Tirta Empul is an active sacred water temple near Tampaksiring; respectful dress and a sarong are required. [4] Ask a licensed local guide about permitted areas and current visitor rules. Observing the temple does not require taking part in a purification ritual.

Start with the place that matters most to you. If queues, heat or a ceremony make the day slower, drop the extra stop and return to Ubud for a late lunch or pool time. Avoid a package that adds a waterfall, swing, coffee stop and another temple simply because the vehicle is available all day.

Compare the route, group size and inclusions in Ubud activities on GetYourGuide. Confirm whether pickup covers your actual hotel and whether admission, a guide and any additional stops cost extra. A driver and a licensed guide are different services; ask who will explain the sites.

Days four to seven: a coast finish that stays relaxed

Day four: make the move the main event

Have breakfast in Ubud, check out and travel directly to Sanur. Keep lunch and the first walk near your new hotel. If your room is not ready, ask to store luggage; do not assume early check-in. An elaborate sightseeing transfer usually turns an easy change of scene into another full touring day.

Day five: leave space for the beach

Start with a section of Sanur’s paved beachfront path, then return for breakfast or a shaded drink. The official destination guide identifies the promenade as a useful walking and cycling route. [2] You do not need to cover its entire length. Pick a manageable out-and-back walk with an easy turning point.

Keep the middle of the day for the pool, reading or a leisurely lunch. Check local advice before entering the sea: a beach’s reputation does not guarantee safe conditions on a particular day. Pack walking shoes that fit well and can grip wet surfaces; a new pair bought just before departure is a poor experiment on holiday.

Day six: choose one final experience

For a dramatic cultural finish, arrange a driver for Uluwatu and consider its Kecak performance. The temple’s cliff setting and evening dance are the attraction; check the current performance time and ticket arrangements before organising the day. [5] Allow an afternoon and evening for the whole outing rather than treating it as a quick stop. Avoid adding several southern beaches and a shopping circuit.

Alternatively, remain in Sanur. A second unstructured coast day is the better choice if you are tired, travelling with children or leaving on an early flight. The route is complete without the Uluwatu excursion. Bali private-driver options on Viator can help compare driver-led outings; check that your chosen listing actually collects in Sanur and returns you there.

Day seven: protect the flight

Confirm your pickup the evening before. Work backwards from your airline’s requested airport arrival time, then add a road allowance and disruption margin. A late flight may permit a local breakfast or swim, but day seven is not the place for a distant day trip. Ask about luggage storage and a shower after checkout if your departure is in the evening.

Allow for the whole transfer, not just the drive

Bali’s tourism authority warns that congestion and ceremonial processions can slow road travel. [6] The allowances below are editorial planning ranges checked on 1 November 2026, not measured journeys or promised taxi times. Give your hotel or driver your exact addresses and flight details before agreeing a pickup.

Conservative starting allowances; increase them for your date and circumstances
LegRoad time to budgetKeep separate
Airport to UbudAbout 2–3 hours after leaving the terminalImmigration, baggage collection and driver meeting
Ubud to SanurAbout 1½–2½ hoursPacking, checkout, lunch and check-in
Sanur to airportAbout 45–90 minutesYour airline’s check-in requirement plus extra disruption margin

A useful moving-day model is 30 minutes to pack and check out, two hours on the road, an hour for lunch and half an hour to settle in: four hours before sightseeing. Actual road time can be longer. Book the move as a half-day commitment and treat any time saved as a bonus.

You do not need to ride a scooter to follow this route. Prebook the airport and inter-hotel journeys, then compare a private car with a small-group outing for the longer sightseeing days. The FCDO advises using registered taxi companies and checking app-booked driver details. [9]

For the hotel move, Ubud–Sanur road-transfer options on 12Go is another way to compare options. Select a road transfer between your actual pickup and drop-off points; do not choose an itinerary containing a ferry for this overland journey.

Where seven days go. Arrival + departure: 2 days — Any usable hours are a bonus; One hotel change: 1 day — A flexible half-day remains if the transfer runs smoothly; Full days without moving: 4 days — Two from Ubud and two from Sanur.

A transparent budget for two people

This worked example uses two adults sharing one room for six nights. It is a set of chosen spending allowances, not a survey of current prices or a promise that a particular hotel will fit. Replace each input with your actual quote before booking. The entry-fee assumptions reflect an eligible British tourist using the standard visa-on-arrival route, checked on 1 November 2026. [8]

That is IDR 8.97 million each on a shared-cost basis. International flights, insurance, substantial shopping, alcohol, premium activities and mobile data are outside the example. Taxes and service charges must be included when substituting your accommodation and restaurant figures.

The room choice is the biggest simple lever: increasing the nightly allowance from IDR 900,000 to IDR 1.5 million adds IDR 3.6 million across six nights, or IDR 4.14 million including the same 15% reserve. For a solo trip, room and private-car costs will not halve. For a sterling comparison, divide your rupiah quotes by your actual card or currency provider’s current IDR-per-£ rate, allowing for its fees. Then enter the converted GBP figures in the Travel Budget Calculator; the calculator does not convert currencies.

Weather, entry checks and what to book first

Keep a wet-weather swap ready

The tourism ministry describes April–October as the broad dry season for Bali and November–March as the wet season, while stressing that the pattern is becoming less predictable. [7] In wetter periods, put outdoor walking early in a flexible day and keep a museum, workshop or rest afternoon available. Do not attempt a slippery field path simply to preserve the original order.

Check whether your dates overlap Nyepi. Bali’s airport and normal outside activity close for the day of silence; confirm the relevant year’s arrangements before booking flights or transfers. [6]

Do the entry administration before the fun bookings

For British citizen passport holders, current FCDO guidance requires six months’ passport validity after arrival and two blank pages. Check the correct visa, proof of onward travel and the free All Indonesia declaration within 72 hours before arrival. Bali’s tourist levy is separate from the visa. Other nationalities must check their own eligibility. [8]

  1. Confirm flights, local dates and entry requirements.
  2. Reserve the three Ubud and three Sanur nights, checking room access and cancellation terms.
  3. Arrange the arrival pickup and the day-four transfer.
  4. Book only the activity that would be disappointing to miss, then leave weather-dependent choices flexible.
  5. Save hotel addresses and booking details offline. If you need mobile data, compare Airalo’s eSIM store, selecting Indonesia coverage and checking that your device is unlocked and eSIM-compatible, along with the activation rules.

A common mistake is to judge every destination by its distance on a map. Another is to spend the last full day travelling to an offshore island and then worry about the return. This first-time route has enough variety without either complication.

For travel on a full British citizen passport, FCDO guidance currently specifies an expiry date at least six months after arrival and two blank passport pages. The standard eligible visa-on-arrival fee is IDR 500,000, separate from Bali’s IDR 150,000 tourist levy; the free All Indonesia arrival declaration is completed within 72 hours before arrival. Recheck the official rules before booking. [8]

Practical questions

What if my holiday is seven nights rather than seven days?

You have an extra night compared with this plan. Add it to Ubud if culture and countryside matter most, or to Sanur for a slower coast finish. Keep two bases unless the additional hotel move itself serves a clear purpose.

Can this work with limited walking?

It can be adapted, but this is not an accessibility-certified route. Ask hotels and venues about steps, room access, vehicle drop-off and toilets, and replace field walks with viewpoints reached by car. Do not infer step-free access from photographs.

Should I replace Sanur with Seminyak?

Consider that swap if restaurants, shopping and a livelier evening scene matter more than this plan’s quieter promenade-focused finish. Keep the same three-plus-three night structure and recalculate the airport and southern excursion journeys from your actual hotel.

Make this route your own

Choose Ubud and Sanur if you want a balanced first week with culture, countryside and time by the sea. The strongest version of this itinerary has two considered Ubud outings, a simple transfer and enough coast time to feel like a holiday. Book six nights in the right locations, then resist filling every remaining gap.
