Bali and Nusa Penida Itinerary: Nine Days With an Island Overnight

Ubud culture, Sanur breathing space and one carefully chosen night on Penida.

9 days · 8 nightsOne Penida overnightTwo final nights on Bali

AI-generated Nusa Penida illustration; not a documentary view.

A Bali and Nusa Penida itinerary works best when the island visit has a limited job: time for the west-coast scenery and an evening without a same-day boat deadline. This nine-day plan gives Ubud three nights, Sanur two nights, Nusa Penida one night and Sanur two final nights. It counts arrival and departure as travel days, so it does not promise nine full sightseeing days.

Eight nights accounted for

3 Ubud + 2 Sanur + 1 Penida + 2 Sanur.

West-coast viewpoints; no attempt to cover both coasts.

A real travel allowance

Use 3½ hours as an illustrative Sanur-to-hotel planning block.

Space before flying

Return to Bali on day 7 for a day 9 departure.

The nine-day route, with every night counted

This route suits a first visit with an international arrival and departure through Bali, a moderate sightseeing pace and an interest in dramatic scenery rather than exhaustive beach collecting. It is less suitable if boat travel is a major concern, boarding assistance is essential but cannot be confirmed, or every day must involve easy swimming.

Suggested allocation, not a dated transport timetable. Day 1 starts when you arrive in Bali.

Using Sanur twice costs an extra check-in but makes the sea journey easier to organise and provides a familiar place to return to. Ask the same hotel whether it can store your main bag during the island night; obtain agreement before travelling and keep essential belongings with you. If your arrival is late, stay near the airport and remove a Ubud night instead of expecting a full day 1.

Enter the four stays in the Trip Itinerary Planner to assign dates. Its own-town option is useful here; it organises the nights but does not verify boats or journey feasibility. [10]

Nine-day route: three Ubud nights, two Sanur nights, one Nusa Penida night and two final Sanur nights before departure on day nine.
Original night allocation: eight nights, including two final nights back on Bali. Suggested sequence, not a map or a guarantee against disruption.

Days 1–3: give Ubud two proper days

Day 1: arrive without an evening commitment

Arrange a transfer to the actual accommodation entrance and keep dinner close by. A hillside room can be attractive, but a short stay benefits from easy access to meals. Ask about steps, the final vehicle approach and any shuttle dependency before choosing a remote property. Do not book a paid performance for the arrival night.

Day 2: art and a small area on foot

Make the Agung Rai Museum of Art, usually shortened to ARMA, the main visit. Its official description centres on Balinese and Indonesian visual and performing arts. Use that as a starting point for looking at the place rather than filling the day with successive photograph stops. Confirm current admission and opening arrangements directly. [4]

After lunch, choose a short walk around your accommodation area or time at the pool. If you want a dance performance, ask which programme is actually running that evening and how you will get back. Avoid attaching distant temples to the same afternoon simply because a driver is available.

Day 3: one northern cultural outing

Tirta Empul is in Manukaya near Tampaksiring, north of the Ubud area. It is a working sacred site; sarong requirements apply. A visit can be about understanding the temple without joining a ritual. Let the attendants explain what is permitted and do not treat worship as a staged activity. [5]

Arrange one temple visit with a local guide or driver and leave the rest of the outing flexible. Agree the stops, total duration and extra charges before setting off. A long swing, waterfall and shopping itinerary would consume the recovery time this route deliberately preserves.

Days 4–5: move to Sanur before the island crossing

On day 4, check out after breakfast and make the move to Sanur the only essential task. The following day is your chance to enjoy the coast and prepare the island stay without an early road transfer from Ubud. Sanur has a long pedestrian route beside the beach; choose a short stretch and return before you are tired or overheated. [6]

Stay where ordinary meals and the beach path are convenient, rather than selecting a room solely by its distance from the harbour. For the boat, a prearranged short road transfer is easier to plan than carrying luggage along an unfamiliar route. Ask your hotel to confirm the correct operator office as well as the harbour name.

Compare rooms on Agoda’s Sanur area page and check the property map, cancellation deadline and full price for both Sanur stays. The link opens an area search; it does not select your dates or confirm a particular room.

Your day 5 preparation

  • Confirm the outward and return operators, check-in instructions and exact Penida landing point.
  • Agree the island pickup and the west-coast plan with your driver.
  • Recheck the sea forecast and any operator notices.
  • Pack one small overnight bag if your hotel has agreed to store the main luggage.
  • Save tickets, contacts and hotel locations offline.

A return to the same Sanur hotel is convenient, but luggage storage is a service to request, not a right included with every reservation.

Days 6–7: make one Penida overnight count

Day 6: cross early enough for one focused outing

Choose a morning departure that leaves room for check-in, landing and meeting your driver. Nusa Penida lies south-east of Bali; its terrain is hilly, and travelling between sights is a material part of the visit. The national tourism guide describes fast-boat crossings as roughly 30–45 minutes in suitable conditions, but that is only the sea segment. [1]

Leave luggage at the accommodation, eat, then make Kelingking’s upper viewpoint the main outing. The same tourism source warns that the beach descent is steep and dangerous. This itinerary stays at the designated viewing area and does not depend on descending to the sand. Use barriers and staff directions as the limits of your visit. [1]

Add one nearby stop only if the driver considers the roads, weather and remaining time suitable. Otherwise enjoy the view, return before dark and have dinner near your accommodation. The overnight is valuable because you can end the outing when you have had enough; it is not an instruction to keep touring until sunset.

For a bookable driver option, compare this Penida car charter on GetYourGuide. The listing starts on Nusa Penida and describes harbour or hotel pickup. Ask for the shorter west-coast scope above, agree the meeting time after your boat and confirm the following morning’s transfer separately; a one-day charter does not automatically cover both days. [13]

Day 7: a short morning, then back to Bali

If the departure time leaves a comfortable margin, make Crystal Bay a short shore visit before returning to collect your bags. Its west-facing coast is one of Penida’s established scenic stops. Swimming is optional and depends on local conditions; the plan works without entering the water. [1]

Do not insert a separate offshore snorkelling excursion before an essential return boat. It adds another weather-dependent journey and creates a difficult morning if the first activity runs late. Choose a return with later departures still advertised that day where practical, while recognising that a cancellation can affect all services.

Where to sleep for this short stay

Prioritise the actual pickup distance, road access and a meal close to your room over an isolated cliff setting. A north-west accommodation base can be practical if it matches the landing point and driver arrangement. Check those details individually; a property labelled “Nusa Penida” can be far from your selected harbour.

Use Agoda’s Nusa Penida accommodation map or Booking.com’s Nusa Penida search to compare locations and the complete room terms, then confirm transfers directly with the property. A one-night booking deserves particular attention to check-in time, luggage storage and breakfast timing.

Book the whole transfer, not just the crossing

Maruti publishes a Sanur–Nusa Penida service, and its site refers to private island ports. That is why “Nusa Penida” alone is not enough information for a pickup. Obtain the precise landing name and map pin from the operator. Check current departure times, fares and the operator’s confirmation for your chosen dates before booking. [2]

Check-in and boarding allowance60 minutes
Sea crossing allowance45 minutes

Illustrative hotel-to-hotel total3 hours 30 minutes

For example, a 09:00 sailing could require leaving the hotel at about 07:30 under these assumptions. With onward arrival around 11:00, the remaining morning is not a free sightseeing block. Substitute the operator’s real check-in requirement and your property’s pickup estimate before using that example.

Compare the route on 12Go’s Sanur–Nusa Penida search alongside the operator’s own booking channel. Check whether each offer includes hotel transport, luggage, local charges and the return journey; search results can mix different starting points. [8]

The FCDO warns that sea conditions can change quickly and ferry safety standards vary. Check usable life jackets, including suitable children’s sizes. [3] Use BMKG’s Badung Strait marine forecast as one current information source and follow the operator and harbour authorities’ instructions. [7]

Illustrative Penida transfer: 30 minutes to check-in, 60 for boarding, 45 at sea, 45 to land and meet a driver, and 30 onward; total 210 minutes.
Original transfer model: three hours thirty minutes door to door. Every component is an editorial allowance to replace with confirmed journey details.

Treat the boat operator’s sailing as conditional, not a guaranteed appointment. Check the current Badung Strait forecast and harbour announcements before leaving the hotel, verify that an appropriate life jacket is available for every passenger, and postpone the crossing rather than using an unfamiliar substitute vessel if conditions or equipment are unsafe. The FCDO warns that maritime conditions and safety standards vary. [3] [7]

Days 8–9: keep the finish easy

Day 8 is a full day back on Bali. Walk another stretch of Sanur, have a long lunch or leave space for an activity postponed earlier. If the sea journey was disrupted, this day offers flexibility; it does not guarantee that every delay can be absorbed.

A local art visit is an alternative to another excursion across the island. Museum Le Mayeur is in Sanur and occupies the painter’s former home. Check the current opening arrangements before going. [9] Keep the afternoon free enough to pack, settle bills and reconfirm the airport car.

On day 9, work backwards from the airline’s required airport arrival time and a driver’s current road estimate. Add road contingency separately. A journey time displayed on a quiet afternoon is not a sensible basis for a tight flight departure.

If your flight leaves just after midnight, make sure the hotel night and airport-car date match the previous evening. A 00:30 departure on day 9 does not leave day 9 available for sightseeing; you would go to the airport on day 8.

A transparent nine-day budget for two

The following is an editable spending plan in Indonesian rupiah for two adults sharing one room. Every unit rate is an editorial assumption, not an advertised fare or a hotel quote. It is intended to show the arithmetic and the costs that are easy to overlook. Replace each line with offers for your travel dates.

Illustrative assumptions dated 2 November 2026; no live availability or exchange-rate conversion is implied.

The model equals IDR 9,315,000 per person when shared equally. It excludes international flights, insurance, visas and applicable tourist or harbour levies, shopping, alcohol-heavy evenings, paid workshops, spa treatments and extra boat activities. Add confirmed taxes or charges that are absent from individual quotes; do not assume the contingency covers every excluded item.

Accommodation has the clearest multiplier: increasing the room allowance by IDR 200,000 adds IDR 1,600,000 across eight nights, or IDR 1,840,000 after the same 15% contingency. By comparison, a slightly dearer well-located Penida room may reduce the need for another paid pickup; compare the complete stay cost.

If you prefer to plan in pounds, convert your actual quotes at your own payment or exchange rate, then enter them in the Travel Budget Calculator. The calculator accepts GBP and does not convert the rupiah figures above. [11]

What to change, and what to book first

When a second Penida night is worth more

For eastern viewpoints or a dedicated snorkelling day, use 3 Ubud + 1 Sanur + 2 Penida + 2 Sanur. Cross on day 5, give day 6 entirely to the island and return on day 7. That is still eight nights, and it preserves the final two Bali nights. The price is losing the full Sanur preparation day.

If boats are cancelled before you leave, retain the extra nights in Sanur or return to an available Bali base. Avoid switching to an unfamiliar vessel simply to keep an island hotel booking. If Penida boarding or vehicle access cannot meet your needs, a Bali-only version is a reasonable final plan.

Booking order

  1. Fix arrival and departure dates, then reserve refundable rooms where practical.
  2. Choose the two sailings and confirm exact ports and luggage terms.
  3. Arrange the Penida pickup, sightseeing scope and return check-in transfer.
  4. Confirm any paid cultural activity after the main route works.
  5. Check official entry requirements and applicable charges separately before travel.

For connectivity, compare your existing roaming option with Airalo’s eSIM plans; choose Indonesia and check device compatibility, covered networks and activation terms before buying. Indonesia plans are listed, but coverage at every bay or hotel is not guaranteed. Keep transport contacts offline as well. [12]

Questions before you book

Is a day trip simpler than one night on Penida?

It removes an island hotel booking but puts the sightseeing and both crossings into one day. Choose it if you only want a brief organised visit and accept a fixed return deadline. The overnight here is for a more flexible evening and a lighter return morning.

Can I add Diamond Beach to the one-night route?

It would change the scope. Use the two-night variation and give the eastern side its own day, rather than treating an extra cross-island drive as a small detour. Ask a driver to quote the actual combination you want.

Is this route suitable with a wheelchair or limited mobility?

Do not assume it is. Request specific information about boarding gaps, steps, handling assistance, vehicle access, room access and the selected viewpoints. If the boat operator and accommodation cannot confirm what you need, keep the trip on Bali.

Should the last night be on Penida before an evening flight?

This plan deliberately returns on day 7 for a day 9 flight. An evening departure does not remove the possibility of a cancelled sea crossing. The two final Bali nights offer more room to respond, though no buffer guarantees against prolonged disruption.

The final decision

Book the eight nights and the two boat journeys before filling the sightseeing gaps. Keep Penida focused on its west coast, use a driver for the selected stops, and treat the final Sanur stay as useful holiday time as well as room for disruption. Add a second island night only by removing a night elsewhere; the flight buffer should be the last part you cut.
