Bali Family Itinerary: Eight Days With Easy Transfers and Rest Days
Three nights in Ubud, four by the sea in Sanur, and enough empty space to enjoy both.
An original AI-generated illustration inspired by Sanur’s coastline, not a photograph or a forecast of sea conditions.
A good Bali family itinerary leaves room for a child to spend an entire afternoon in the pool without making the rest of the holiday fall apart. This eight-day plan combines a little Ubud culture with a longer Sanur beach stay, gives the hotel move its own day and protects two days from advance bookings.
It is designed for families who want variety without a circuit of the island. The main version assumes a daytime arrival and children who can manage one longer arrival transfer. Families landing late, travelling with a baby or wanting almost no car time can use the simpler variations below.

The Bali family itinerary: Ubud first, Sanur last
Putting Ubud first gets the longer inland journey done early and leaves the final four nights closer to the airport. Sanur has a beachfront pedestrian path and is on Bali’s east-facing coast; those features suit short outings that can end whenever the family has had enough. They do not make every beach condition suitable for swimming. [1]
| Days | Sleep in | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Ubud — 3 nights | Settle in, try one cultural activity, keep a full rest day. |
| 4–7 | Sanur — 4 nights | Move once, enjoy the coast, rest again and leave one optional outing. |
| 8 | No hotel night included | Airport journey and departure; arrange late checkout separately if needed. |

This deliberately leaves northern Bali, the Nusa islands and the Bukit cliffs for another trip. Adding any of them requires a conscious trade: remove a rest day, accept a long excursion or stay longer. For this particular holiday, the variety comes from two contrasting bases rather than a longer list of stops.
If you land late in the evening, the seven-night Sanur version is the easiest choice. An optional Ubud day trip from Sanur still means driving both ways; skip it if avoiding car time is the priority. Reversing the two bases is possible, but it moves the longer Ubud-to-airport journey to departure day. Agree that journey with your driver before choosing the order.
Put your actual arrival date and the two night allocations into the Trip Itinerary Planner before booking. It can organise the stops and nights; the driver still needs to confirm the journeys.
Eight days, with room for everyone’s energy levels
Day 1 — Arrive, eat and settle into Ubud
Arrange a named meeting point and a driver who has the flight number, hotel address and each child’s restraint requirements. Keep snacks, water and a change of clothes accessible. Allow the arrival process and inland journey to be the whole programme; an apparent early landing does not justify a prepaid afternoon activity.
At the hotel, check sleeping arrangements, doors, balconies and pool access before unpacking. Have a simple meal nearby or on site. There is no sightseeing target today.
Day 2 — One cultural morning
Choose a short museum visit or a prearranged art activity around Ubud. ARMA offers painting, offering-making and music workshops; several are listed as two hours. Ask which session suits your children’s ages, whether an adult must participate, and whether the group can finish early. An adult workshop listing is not confirmation that every child can join. [2]
A short look at the museum’s collection may suit a family that cannot commit to a class. With very young children, replace the workshop with a brief local walk arranged through your accommodation. Avoid turning this into a combined temple, swing, waterfall and rice-terrace tour. Return for lunch and a quiet afternoon.
Day 3 — A genuine Ubud rest day
Keep this day free of bookings. Have a slow breakfast, take turns supervising pool time and deal with laundry. If a child needs time in the room, an adult can stay with them without anyone losing a paid excursion. If everybody wants a walk, choose somewhere close enough to return easily; the day still works if you do nothing beyond the hotel.
Day 4 — Move to Sanur without a sightseeing detour
Pack after breakfast and leave at a time agreed with the driver and receiving hotel. Keep one small bag ready for the interval before the room is available: swimwear, nappies if needed, snacks and essential medicines. Confirm luggage storage and access to facilities rather than assuming early check-in.
Make lunch and the transfer the only commitments. Once settled, identify an easy dinner option and the nearest convenient beach-path access. A hotel change already involves packing, checking out, loading, driving, checking in and unpacking; it is more than the time spent in the car.
Day 5 — Sanur in short sections
Walk a manageable stretch of the beachfront path in the cooler part of the morning, then stop for breakfast or a drink. Sanur’s promenade is useful because the outing can be lengthened or shortened without needing a driver. [1] Agree a turnaround point before anyone becomes tired.
If conditions and local advice favour a swim, keep it brief and closely supervised. Otherwise enjoy the sand or return to the hotel pool. Avoid treating a pale, flat-looking sea as a safety assessment. Lunch near your room leaves the afternoon available for naps and shade.
Day 6 — Another protected rest day
Do not use this as overflow for everything you skipped. Let the children choose between the hotel, a nearby meal and a short beach visit. It is also the useful point for checking the departure transfer and sorting any outstanding laundry, rather than leaving those jobs until the last evening.
Day 7 — Pick one optional outing
The simplest version is another Sanur morning, perhaps with older children choosing the walking route and lunch. Families wanting a larger activity can replace it with Waterbom in Kuta. The park publishes ride-specific height and weight restrictions, so check the current rules against your children before buying tickets. [4]
You can compare Waterbom day tickets on GetYourGuide with Waterbom ticket options on Viator. Check the selected date, child age bands, voucher instructions and extras before paying. [11] The linked Viator product requires a separate actual-ticket email from its supplier; the booking confirmation alone is not the admission ticket. Read its delivery instructions and follow up if the ticket does not arrive. [12] A waterpark visit is a separate excursion with a return car journey, its own cost and a different energy level. Reprice it instead of assuming the example budget includes it. Do not add Ubud or another distant stop afterwards. Keep the evening near the hotel for packing.
Day 8 — Leave time for the airport
Work backwards from the airline’s required arrival time at the terminal, then add your driver’s current road estimate and a delay margin. A late flight does not create a free extra hotel night. Reserve late checkout or another suitable place to rest if needed, and keep the final meal simple.

Make the three necessary journeys easier
Prearrange airport–Ubud, Ubud–Sanur and Sanur–airport separately or as an agreed package. Send the actual hotel entrances, not just the area names. A rural Ubud address and an accommodation entrance reached through a narrow lane can change the practical journey.
| Journey | Road allowance | What to keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to Ubud | About 1½–3 hours | Immigration, baggage, meeting the driver and a possible comfort stop. |
| Ubud to Sanur | About 1–2½ hours | Packing, checkout and waiting for the next room. |
| Sanur to airport | About 45–90 minutes | Your airline’s check-in deadline and an extra delay margin. |
Indonesia’s tourism site describes the airport–Sanur journey as around 30–45 minutes depending on traffic; the wider allowance above is intended to leave families more breathing room. Reconfirm all three journeys locally because congestion, rain, ceremonies and the exact address can push them beyond these ranges. [1]
Request the restraint type for each child’s size, the number of usable seatbelts, luggage capacity and written confirmation that the seats will be fitted. Bali Baby Hire is one direct provider to compare: it advertises airport and hotel transfers with up to two fitted child seats, and says that luggage reduces the passenger capacity of its seven-seat vehicles to four. This is a provider statement, so confirm the actual vehicle and equipment for your booking. [3]
A low fare is not useful if the available vehicle cannot take your family, luggage and suitable restraints. Give the provider a photograph or list of bulky items, including a pushchair. Keep the same requirements for local outings; they do not stop mattering after the airport journey.
You can also compare Ubud–Sanur road transfers on 12Go. Choose a Taxi/private car journey matching your actual addresses and exclude boat or combined tickets. Confirm child seats, baggage and any extra charges directly with the operator before paying.
Choose accommodation that makes the rest days worthwhile
For this route, the hotel is part of the itinerary. A remote villa can look appealing while making every meal another car journey. Assess the precise address, room arrangement and route to food before comparing decorative features.
| Check | Ask before paying | Why it changes the trip |
|---|---|---|
| Real occupancy | Will this exact room accept both adults and children at their stated ages, and which beds are included? | A room sleeping two does not become a family room because a booking site allows a child search. |
| Water access | Is there a barrier between the room and pool? Can doors be secured? Request recent photographs. | A private pool immediately outside the bedroom creates a different supervision task. |
| Steps and paths | How many steps lead from the car to the room, breakfast and pool? | Important for pushchairs, tired children and anyone with limited mobility. |
| Food and rest | Is breakfast included for everyone? Is there nearby food and somewhere shaded during the afternoon? | Rest days work better when basic needs require little travel. |
| Sleeping space | Are connecting rooms guaranteed, or merely requested? Is a cot confirmed? | Booking notes alone do not secure the arrangement you need. |
In Ubud, favour a location that makes your chosen cultural morning straightforward and has easy meal options. In Sanur, check the walking route from the hotel to the promenade, including road crossings. A property described as “Sanur” may still require transport to the stretch you want to use.
For accommodation searches, compare Ubud stays on Agoda, then look at Sanur stays on Agoda alongside Sanur accommodation on Booking.com. These are area searches, so enter the dates and every child’s age, check the map, and inspect the exact room terms. Once you have two suitable offers, the Hotel Comparison Calculator can compare your quoted costs in the same currency.
Adapt the plan to the children you are travelling with
| Family situation | Best adjustment | Keep |
|---|---|---|
| Baby or toddler needing predictable naps | Consider seven nights in Sanur. Keep any inland visit optional and arrange equipment before arrival. | Both rest days and short mornings. |
| Primary-school children | Use the two-base plan and choose one hands-on activity that accepts their ages. | Afternoons close to the room. |
| Teenagers | Let them select day 7’s outing and take part in planning the budget. | One hotel change; do not add a third base simply to create more activity. |
| Mixed ages or limited mobility | Prioritise step-free room access where confirmed; split an optional activity between adults if that works for the family. | A useful alternative for whoever stays behind. |
For one adult travelling with children, the same route can work, but reducing commitments is valuable. Choose accommodation with meals close at hand, make transfers direct, and do not rely on an older sibling to supervise younger children in water. Check any consent or travel-document requirements applicable to your family before departure.
If adults want an evening out, arrange any childcare directly, check the carer’s experience and policies, and meet before relying on the service. No childcare or children’s club is assumed in this itinerary or its budget.
An adjustable budget for two adults and two children
The worked example below is a planning model for one family over eight days and seven nights. Accommodation, meals, transfers and activities are chosen inputs, not advertised offers or evidence that rooms are available at those rates. It assumes one suitable family room or unit, breakfast included for everyone, and modest paid outings.
| Item | Calculation or assumption | Family total |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | 7 nights × IDR 1,600,000, including taxes and breakfast | IDR 11,200,000 |
| Meals and non-alcoholic drinks | 8 days × IDR 650,000, with breakfast already included | IDR 5,200,000 |
| Three essential transfers | IDR 1,800,000 allowance for suitable vehicles and child seats | IDR 1,800,000 |
| Local outings and activities | IDR 2,400,000 allowance; no Waterbom tickets included | IDR 2,400,000 |
| Bali tourist levy | 4 people × IDR 150,000, assuming no exemption | IDR 600,000 |
| Subtotal | Before contingency | IDR 21,200,000 |
| Contingency | 10% of subtotal | IDR 2,120,000 |
| Total planning pot | For all four travellers | IDR 23,320,000 |
The levy of IDR 150,000 per foreign tourist is published in the FCDO entry guidance; check current exemption rules and pay through the official channel linked there. It is separate from visa charges. [6]
Accommodation changes the model quickly. If your confirmed sleeping arrangement costs another IDR 800,000 each night, add IDR 5,600,000 plus IDR 560,000 contingency: the total becomes IDR 29,480,000. Adding IDR 250,000 to the daily food allowance raises the original total by IDR 2,200,000 including contingency. Use the actual quoted total with children’s ages, bedding and taxes before deciding which version is affordable.
Keep money for a late checkout, medicines, extra laundry or a changed activity outside any non-refundable booking commitment. Convert the final rupiah total using the exchange rate and fees available to you when paying.
Weather and essential family preparations
Indonesia’s tourism authority describes Bali’s broad dry season as April to October and wet season as November to March, while noting that seasons are becoming less predictable. [5] Treat that as background for choosing dates, not a daily forecast. In wetter periods, favour a room and hotel you would happily use through a rainy afternoon, and move an outdoor outing into an available gap rather than filling both rest days.
Check whether your dates overlap Nyepi before booking flights or transfers. Bali’s day of silence includes restrictions on movement and an airport closure; verify the relevant year’s arrangements with your accommodation and airline. [8]
- Check each traveller’s passport, visa and arrival-declaration requirements using the current official links in the FCDO guidance; children need their own checks. [6]
- Seek destination-specific travel-health advice well before departure and arrange insurance appropriate to the family. FCDO advises checking recommendations at least eight weeks ahead. [7]
- Use safe drinking water and suitable sun and insect protection. Keep children away from unfamiliar animals; seek immediate medical help after a bite or scratch. [7]
- Take local advice on the sea, respect warning flags and supervise children continuously around water. Official travel advice warns that many Indonesian beaches are unpatrolled and currents can be dangerous. [9]
Store hotel addresses, transfer confirmations and emergency contacts offline. A data connection can also help with driver messages and maps. If your phone supports eSIMs, you can compare plans in the Airalo eSIM store and select Indonesia; check device compatibility, validity and the package terms before buying. Airalo lists Indonesia plans, but mobile coverage is not a substitute for saved details. [10]
What to book first, and what to leave open
- Confirm the flight times and count seven accommodation nights against the actual local arrival and departure dates.
- Secure the room arrangement and airport transfers, including written child-seat confirmation.
- Agree the Ubud–Sanur move and check how the hotel will handle an arrival before the room is ready.
- Book one age-suitable cultural session only after its timing and participation rules are confirmed.
- Leave days 3 and 6 untouched. Decide on day 7 when you know the family’s energy and weather outlook.
The main mistakes are small ones that accumulate: buying a tour before checking the flight arrival date; treating road time as the entire hotel-change task; assuming that “family friendly” confirms beds or pool barriers; and upgrading every spare morning into a paid day trip.
This plan gives up breadth in exchange for more usable time together. It suits families content with a taste of inland Bali and several coastal days. Those wanting volcano walks, multiple islands or a surf-focused holiday should choose a longer or differently structured itinerary.
Questions before choosing your version
Is eight days enough for Bali with children?
It is enough for this two-base holiday if those are eight days actually in Bali. If the eight-day allowance includes the flights from and back to the UK, recount the local nights first. With fewer than seven nights, one base becomes more attractive.
Should Sanur come before Ubud?
That can make the arrival easier, particularly after a late landing. The trade-off is a longer final airport journey. For a family wanting the least complicated version overall, seven nights in Sanur avoids both that decision and the hotel change.
Can a boat trip to the Nusa islands fit?
It would replace a rest day or the optional outing and adds boat conditions, transfers and a fixed return to the plan. It is excluded from the main route so the holiday can work without it. Add island time on a longer trip if it is a priority.
What if the children love the pool more than the excursions?
Keep the nights and remove an outing. The hotel bookings still work, the transfer structure stays simple and the rest days have already protected the itinerary from becoming a list of obligations.
Choose Ubud plus Sanur for a balanced first family visit. Choose Sanur alone when sleep, minimal travel or an awkward flight schedule matters more. In either version, book the practical essentials carefully and give the family permission to do less.
