A practical place to begin

A Koh Chang travel guide needs to give the journey as much attention as the beach. The large island in Trat offers forested mountains, several coastal bases and room for a varied stay, but the mainland transfer, ferry and final island road are real parts of the holiday.

Choose a base that makes ordinary days easy, then add an excursion or inland outing when conditions suit. You do not need to ride a scooter or repeatedly cross the island to enjoy it. A few deliberate choices can provide more useful freedom than a long list of places linked together without considering the roads.

This guide also separates the current Cambodia land-border advice from older island warnings. It uses dated sources for transport and fees, identifies conflicting information and leaves the itinerary flexible enough for weather rather than promising the same experience in every season.

Koh Chang travel guide: which island and which holiday?

This Koh Chang travel guide covers the large island in Trat province, in Thailand’s eastern Gulf. It is not the smaller island with the same name near Ranong. That distinction matters when searching for hotels, weather information and transport: a correct-looking island name can still produce the wrong journey. [1]

Trat’s Koh Chang combines a mountainous forested interior with coastal accommodation areas and boat excursions. It rewards more time than a hurried one-night beach stop. The recommendations here are research-led comparisons of geography, official transport information, operator programmes and practical travel needs, rather than claims of personal inspection or invented visits.

Give the island enough time

Four nights is a useful starting point when travelling overland from Bangkok. It gives you three complete days between arrival and departure, enough for a beach day, an excursion and some flexibility. Three nights can work with a well-timed connection, but the transport becomes a larger share of the holiday.

A week suits travellers who enjoy alternating activity with quiet days. You do not need to fill it with distant outings: choosing a suitable base and enjoying the surrounding beach can be the most valuable part. Conversely, someone seeking a short two-night escape from Bangkok should compare the additional journey with a nearer destination before committing.

Current travel advice: read the geographical boundary carefully

The FCDO advice checked on 4 October 2026 advises against all but essential travel within 20 kilometres of the land border with Cambodia. It also says land crossings between Thailand and Cambodia remain suspended. Do not substitute an older, broader warning or assume that a planned border crossing will operate. [2]

Koh Chang is not the land-border zone

The FCDO’s update history records that its earlier advice against all but essential travel to Koh Chang, Koh Kood and the islands between them was removed in February 2026. Nevertheless, check the current advice again before booking and departure, and read your insurer’s conditions. This distinction is not a guarantee that any destination or route is risk-free. [3]

The practical task is to check the island, the mainland route and any onward international journey separately. A beach booking on Koh Chang does not establish that a Cambodia land-border itinerary is possible. Likewise, a map screenshot shared months ago may not show the current advisory boundary.

Keep ordinary travel risks in view

For many visitors, the decisions they control most directly concern roads, swimming conditions, boat operators and realistic connections. Follow local instructions and keep important contact information available offline. A sensible plan combines current official advice with careful day-to-day choices rather than treating one favourable headline as the whole safety assessment. [4]

When to visit: dry-season appeal and wet-season trade-offs

November into the early part of the year is commonly recommended for Koh Chang’s beach and boat conditions. Bangkok Airways’ destination guidance highlights November to February, while local long-term reporting describes a substantially wetter period broadly from May to October. These are seasonal patterns, not a forecast or promise of calm water on a particular date. [5] [6]

A dry-season booking still needs flexibility

Popular periods can bring stronger demand for rooms, transport and ferry capacity. Book the room and arrival arrangement that matter to you, but keep one day free to adjust an excursion. A sunny week is more enjoyable when you are not committed to travelling across the island every morning.

For a special occasion, choose a property whose room and covered facilities appeal even if an afternoon turns wet. Paying for a view is easier to justify when the room is comfortable in its own right, rather than depending on a perfect sunset or uninterrupted beach weather.

Green-season value has conditions

Quieter periods may offer attractive room choices, but compare the facilities and excursions actually operating during your dates. A lower rate is less useful when the restaurant, pool section or activity you wanted is unavailable. Ask the hotel directly about its current arrangements and nearby services.

Rougher sea conditions can affect swimming and excursions even when some ferry services continue. Do not interpret an operating car ferry as proof that a west-coast beach is safe for swimming. The crossing route, beach exposure and activity are different questions. Local advice and flags should decide what you do that day.

Getting there by air: Trat is on the mainland

Bangkok Airways operates flights from Suvarnabhumi to Trat, with the flight itself described as around an hour. However, Trat airport is not on Koh Chang. You still need a road transfer, ferry crossing and island journey to the hotel. Compare the complete trip rather than presenting the flight duration as the time from Bangkok to your room. [5]

Arrange the onward transfer before landing

Ask whether a shared or private transfer is available for your flight and whether it includes the ferry and delivery to the accommodation. Give the precise hotel, because northern and southern west-coast bases create different final journeys. Check luggage allowances for both the airline and the ground vehicle.

A through flight reservation and a separately purchased island transfer may have different change conditions. If the flight is delayed, establish who you contact and how the ground operator handles the missed meeting. A late landing near the end of ferry operations needs a clear fallback rather than an assumption that boats will wait.

When flying is worth comparing

Flying is most compelling when it fits naturally with your Bangkok stay or a suitable protected air connection. It can reduce the long mainland road stage, but adds airport check-in and the transfer from Trat. For a group, compare several airfares with an appropriately sized private vehicle; the answer can change with luggage, schedule and room location.

If an international arrival and the Trat flight are on separate tickets, allow for immigration, bags, re-checking and delay risk. An overnight Bangkok stop can make the connection more manageable. Do not treat a short domestic flight as a reason to create a fragile chain after a long-haul arrival.

Back to the guide ↑

Overland from Bangkok: make it a travel day

Road transport can be economical and straightforward when you choose a service with clear endpoints. Some tickets end in Trat town, some at a mainland pier, and others include a ferry or an island drop-off. These distinctions are more important than the broad label Bangkok to Koh Chang. [5] [7]

Combined seats or a private vehicle?

A combined bus or van product can reduce the number of arrangements you make independently. Read the pickup location, luggage rules and final destination carefully. A ticket ending at an island office may still leave a hotel transfer to organise, particularly for a more distant beach.

A private vehicle can collect you at the hotel and simplify luggage handling. Ask whether the same vehicle crosses with you or whether passengers change vehicles at the ferry. Both arrangements can be reasonable, but the difference should be explicit. For families, confirm the suitable child restraint and space for cases before paying.

Allow for the ferry queue, not just driving

Treat the overland journey as a substantial part of the day, with time for stops, pier procedures and the final island road. On busy dates, queuing for a car ferry can add considerably to a neat driving estimate. A faster vehicle cannot bypass every operational constraint.

An early departure preserves more alternatives than a late-afternoon arrival at the mainland. Keep the first island evening simple and notify the hotel when your arrival estimate changes. A confirmed pickup and a meal nearby are more useful than a prepaid attraction immediately after the advertised arrival.

Back to the guide ↑

The mainland ferry: route, fares and sensible margins

Cost references and illustrative calculations reviewed 4 October 2026; reconfirm actual quotes and inclusions.

The principal car-ferry route described in current sources is Ao Thammachat on the mainland to Ao Sapparot on Koh Chang. Bangkok Airways’ May 2026 guidance gives an operating window of approximately 06:30–18:30 and a crossing around 30–45 minutes. Reconfirm the service for your date rather than treating that window as a guaranteed late arrival option. [5]

What the checked prices do and do not establish

The local information site Koh Chang Ferries reports adult fares of 90 baht and a four-wheel vehicle charge of 200 baht following an April 2026 increase. Checked 4 October 2026. Bangkok Airways also lists the adult fare at 90 baht, but the sources differ on child pricing. Confirm child categories and the current amount at the ticket counter instead of treating conflicting figures as settled. [8] [5]

The local guide describes cash-only, on-the-day standalone ferry ticket sales. This is different from reserving a combined bus or transfer package that includes a crossing. Buying a transport package online does not mean you have independently reserved a particular vehicle position on a car ferry. [8]

Queue time can dominate the crossing

At busy periods, the time waiting to board can matter more than the sailing itself. Keep water and necessary items accessible and avoid planning the day around the shortest quoted crossing. For a vehicle trip, ask the driver or operator what margin they recommend for the date and direction of travel.

For the return, leave the island early enough that a queue does not immediately threaten your onward journey. Where missing a flight would be costly, a mainland or Bangkok overnight is a stronger safeguard than hoping the ferry queue is short.

Where to stay: choose your section of the coast

Most first-time shortlists focus on established west-coast areas such as White Sand Beach, Klong Prao and Kai Bae. Farther south, Lonely Beach, Bailan and the Bang Bao area offer different settings. The quieter east coast is a separate proposition and needs a more deliberate transport plan. TAT’s destination information provides the broad geography; the recommendations below reflect practical fit rather than numerical rankings. [1]

Qualitative planning comparison reviewed 4 October 2026. TAT provides geographical context; individual rooms and conditions differ. [1]

Why a central-looking map pin can mislead

Koh Chang’s mountainous terrain means distance alone is not enough to judge an outing. A location that looks close across a bay or over the interior may not have a direct convenient road connection. Do not assume you can complete a simple circular drive around the island; confirm the actual route to an east- or south-coast destination.

For a first visit, choose a base with meals and the beach you want close enough to reach comfortably. That reduces the need to hire a scooter or arrange a vehicle every time you leave the room. A secluded property can still be excellent when you are happy spending most of the stay there.

Compare the exact room position

A resort may have beachfront and hillside accommodation, or rooms separated from the main facilities by a road. Read the category description carefully. A sea view is not the same as a short step-free walk to the beach, and an attractive pool does not establish the swimming conditions offshore.

Ask about current works, the restaurant’s operating arrangements and transport to your planned activities. These details are especially useful outside the busiest season, when an impressive listing can conceal a more limited day-to-day choice.

Back to the guide ↑

White Sand Beach, Klong Prao and Kai Bae

White Sand Beach: a practical starting point

White Sand Beach deserves a look when an established visitor area and a straightforward northern west-coast base appeal. Compare the position of the room relative to restaurants, the beach and the road. A resort name alone may cover quite different accommodation settings.

KC Grande’s official information distinguishes its beachside setting and accommodation options, making it a useful property to investigate rather than an automatic recommendation. Verify the selected category and whether it is in a hillside or beachside section. Ask about any current improvements that could affect the room during your dates. [9]

Klong Prao: resort space and a beach routine

Klong Prao can suit travellers who want a comfortable resort base with room to settle into a beach-led holiday. Check the immediate surroundings rather than assuming every property gives the same access to outside meals. A resort that is convenient for one restaurant area may be less so for another.

Centara Koh Chang Tropicana is a named property to research here through its official information and current room options. For a family, compare occupancy, children’s facilities and the route between room, pool and beach. Confirm which facilities and activities operate for the booked dates instead of relying on a generic family label. [10]

Kai Bae: another useful independent base

Kai Bae is worth comparing when you want a base that combines accommodation choices with access to nearby meals and excursions. The exact beach frontage still matters, particularly at different tides. Ask the hotel where guests normally swim and how they reach the sand from the selected room.

Gajapuri’s official site provides one property example in this area. Check room categories and any age or facility conditions directly; do not assume that every area of a resort follows the same policy. A suitable cottage, restaurant route and transfer arrangement matter more than a decorative description of the room. [11]

Back to the guide ↑

Southern and eastern bases: choose them deliberately

Lonely Beach, Bailan and the Bang Bao area should not be treated as one identical southern neighbourhood. Some visitors seek evening activity; others want a quiet resort or convenient access to a boat excursion. The specific property and its surroundings matter more than the broad regional label. [1]

Boat access is not the same as beach access

Staying near a departure point can make an excursion convenient, but that does not necessarily provide the sandy swimming beach you imagined. Check where you will spend the ordinary non-excursion day. A pleasant waterside restaurant or pier setting can be enjoyable without replacing a beach you can easily use.

The east coast can appeal to travellers seeking a different, less beach-strip-oriented experience. However, it calls for a deliberate arrival and local transport plan. Confirm the actual road route and cost of reaching the west-coast places on your wish list before booking a room because it appears close on the map.

Keep short stays simple

For four nights, one suitable base is usually more useful than moving across the island halfway through. A longer stay can justify two different settings, particularly when you want both a convenient west-coast base and a quieter retreat. Allow a proper transfer day and avoid scheduling a boat trip between checkout and the next hotel arrival.

Back to the guide ↑

Beaches and swimming: decide locally, every day

A beach recommendation should never be interpreted as a permanent statement that the water is safe. Conditions can change with weather, waves, currents and boat activity. Read flags, follow local advice and avoid entering when warnings are in place. A photograph of calm water from a different month tells you very little about the conditions in front of you. [4]

Choose the beach session around your needs

For families, identify shade, a comfortable entry point and a practical route back to the room or restaurant. Keep children closely supervised rather than relying on the apparent shallowness of the water. A hotel pool may provide a better option when the beach is rough, provided normal supervision and pool rules are followed.

For a quiet afternoon, stay near a route you know rather than seeking the most isolated patch of sand. Seclusion does not establish lifeguard cover or an easy rescue response. Avoid swimming alone, after drinking or near active boat channels, and do not pursue a photograph at the expense of a safe position.

Tides can change the experience

The same beach frontage can look quite different at different water levels. Ask about the usual entry area rather than assuming the space in a promotional picture is available all day. For a room booking, a terrace or pool you enjoy can provide a useful alternative when the shoreline is less suitable for the activity you planned.

Snorkelling and boat trips: compare programmes, not island counts

Cost references and illustrative calculations reviewed 4 October 2026; reconfirm actual quotes and inclusions.

Koh Chang operators offer trips to nearby sites and more extensive excursions in the marine-park area. BB Divers, for example, distinguishes snorkelling programmes and describes the facilities on its boats. Use that kind of specific information to compare the experience rather than choosing the outing with the largest number of stops in its title. [12]

Questions worth asking before booking

Check the departure point, hotel collection, time aboard, time in the water, meals, equipment and additional park charges. Ask whether snorkellers share a boat with divers and how the two programmes are organised. A shared boat is not necessarily a problem, but the schedule should match what you expect to do.

Tell the operator about swimming ability and any assistance required. Ask about flotation aids, guidance and the conditions under which the trip changes or is cancelled. If the advertised route cannot operate, establish whether an alternative route, postponement or refund applies. Do this before paying, not at the pier.

A specific price example with limits

BB Divers displayed a half-day, two-stop snorkelling option at 1,000 baht when checked on 4 October 2026. That figure should not be treated as the price for every full-day programme or assumed to include every possible park charge. Read the selected trip’s inclusions and obtain the final amount for your date. [12]

No operator can guarantee visibility, particular wildlife or access to all sites. The quality of the day depends partly on conditions and partly on how thoughtfully the programme is run. Follow instructions, avoid touching coral and keep a respectful distance from animals rather than trying to secure an encounter.

Waterfalls, forest outings and a day away from the beach

Cost references and illustrative calculations reviewed 4 October 2026; reconfirm actual quotes and inclusions.

Klong Plu waterfall is a well-known option for an inland visit. Local visitor information describes a forest path of roughly 500 metres from the entrance area, but that short distance should not be mistaken for a guaranteed easy or accessible route. Footing, heat and conditions matter, especially after rain. [13]

Check access on the day

Ask whether the site is open and follow ranger instructions about trails and swimming. Water levels can change, and an attractive waterfall photograph is not evidence that entering the water is safe during your visit. Wear footwear suitable for wet uneven ground, carry water and leave enough time to return without hurrying.

The local guide lists a 200-baht adult visitor fee; checked 4 October 2026, but this was not independently confirmed against a current park tariff. Treat it as a budgeting reference and verify the applicable admission at the official entrance. Do not assume a different park or excursion ticket covers it. [13]

Guided walking rather than improvised shortcuts

For a more substantial forest outing, use a suitable local guide and discuss distance, elevation, surface and weather. Describe your fitness and any mobility needs honestly. A guided walk should be selected for the route you can enjoy, not because a steep itinerary sounds more impressive.

Avoid trying to connect coastal places through the interior using an apparent shortcut on a general map. A line or path may not be a maintained visitor route. Inform the hotel of your plans, keep communication available and postpone an outing when conditions make the route unsuitable.

Back to the guide ↑

A realistic four-night itinerary

Arrival day: hotel, orientation and an easy meal

Leave the first evening largely uncommitted. The mainland journey, ferry and island road can take more energy than the short crossing suggests. Once checked in, find the nearest reliable meal option and establish the route between the room, beach and any pickup point you will use later.

Confirm the return arrangements while you still have the transport documents open. If you intend to take a boat excursion, ask about availability and the weather outlook, but avoid buying several fixed activities immediately. It is useful to see how the destination and your energy level feel after arrival.

First full day: enjoy the base you selected

Spend the morning locally. A beach or pool session, an unhurried lunch and a short outing are enough. This is also the best time to test whether a planned walk is comfortable or whether you will need transport for later dinners.

For a family, a settled first day can be more rewarding than immediately adding another early start. For a couple, it provides space to decide whether the holiday needs more activity or less. A good itinerary leaves room for that adjustment instead of treating every empty hour as a problem.

Second full day: one main excursion

Choose a snorkelling programme, a guided inland outing or a carefully planned day visiting another coastal area. Do not combine a full boat excursion with a long evening drive simply to cover more ground. Confirm collection and return details, bring the appropriate equipment and leave the following morning flexible.

If the sea is unsuitable, move the boat trip only when the operator offers a workable alternative. A land outing may also be affected by rain, so do not assume that a waterfall automatically becomes the safe fallback. Local conditions should determine the replacement, which may simply be a comfortable day at the resort.

Third full day and departure

Use the final complete day for a favourite beach, a second modest outing or an activity postponed from earlier. Pack the non-essential items that evening and reconfirm the morning pickup. Check whether breakfast or a takeaway option fits an early departure.

On departure day, prioritise the ferry and mainland connection. A last-minute attraction before a fixed flight rarely improves the holiday enough to justify the risk. Four nights work well because they allow enjoyable days between the transport stages; preserve that benefit by keeping the final handover calm.

Back to the guide ↑

Getting around without making scooters compulsory

Local songthaew-style transport, hotel transfers and private drivers can help you explore without riding. Ask whether a quote is for a shared seat or the whole vehicle, whether it includes waiting and where the return pickup takes place. A vehicle that drops you somewhere does not automatically remain available for the journey back. [5]

Choose a base that reduces daily transport

Accommodation near the meals and beach you intend to use can be more valuable than a small room-rate saving farther away. This is particularly true when you expect to go out several times a day. Compare the cost and effort of those journeys before deciding that a remote room is cheaper overall.

For an excursion to another part of the island, request the actual route and duration. Mountain roads and the absence of a simple convenient loop mean a modest map distance can imply a much longer drive. Organise stops geographically rather than alternating between distant areas.

Treat riding as a serious decision

Koh Chang is not a sensible place to make scooter riding a casual first-time experiment. Unfamiliar bends, slopes, wet surfaces and other traffic require genuine skill. Confirm the appropriate licence, insurance and protective equipment before considering a rental. A rental company’s approval is not evidence that you are legally or adequately insured to ride. [4]

A driver can be the better choice even for someone who normally drives confidently at home. The goal is to enjoy the outing, not to prove that every journey can be done independently. For a group, sharing a properly arranged vehicle may also compare reasonably with multiple separate rides.

Back to the guide ↑

Budgeting: separate the room from the whole holiday

Koh Chang budgets vary substantially with accommodation category, travel dates, mainland transport and how frequently you hire vehicles. The table gives editorial spending allowances prepared on 4 October 2026, not live hotel or restaurant quotations. Replace each line with your actual booking before treating the total as a plan.

Checked examples are identified individually. Other rows are a budgeting method rather than market-price claims.

The costs most often overlooked

Include the island ride after the ferry, return transport, activity extras and any mainland overnight before a flight. A cheap room can be less economical when every meal requires a taxi. Similarly, a resort rate with breakfast may be useful for a family but less valuable to a traveller who prefers eating elsewhere.

Look at cancellation terms as part of the price. A slightly more flexible room or excursion can be valuable when the itinerary depends on weather or an uncertain arrival. That does not mean paying for maximum flexibility everywhere; focus on the bookings whose loss would create the greatest problem.

Avoid false precision in daily averages

A snorkelling day, a transfer day and a quiet pool day have different spending patterns. Dividing everything into a single daily figure can conceal that difference. Build the trip from room nights, major journeys, selected activities and a food allowance, then add a contingency appropriate to your circumstances.

Keep more than one payment method where practical and carry sufficient cash for services that require it. Store the backup separately and avoid carrying all holiday money on a boat outing. A simple budget with visible assumptions is more useful than a precise-looking total based on unverified prices.

Back to the guide ↑

Food, evenings and the value of staying local

A good base makes ordinary meals easy. Before booking a remote property, check whether the restaurant’s hours and menu fit your stay. For dietary restrictions, ask specific questions in advance rather than assuming that a large resort automatically provides every option.

Build the evening around a manageable return

Try an outside restaurant when the route and return are straightforward, but do not turn every dinner into a cross-island transfer. After an active day, a pleasant nearby meal may be more enjoyable than travelling a long way to reproduce somebody else’s must-visit list.

For properties near evening entertainment, ask where the room sits relative to music and busy public spaces. A quiet-room preference is useful, but it may not be guaranteed. Choose a category or location that suits your sleeping habits rather than expecting the whole neighbourhood to change after check-in.

Communicate food requirements clearly

Explain allergies or restrictions before ordering and seek appropriate professional advice before travel where the consequences are serious. The appearance of a dish does not establish all its ingredients or preparation conditions. Keep any necessary explanation available in a form the kitchen can understand.

Breakfast deserves particular attention on excursion and departure days. Confirm whether an early meal or packed alternative is available. This small detail can improve an early pickup far more than adding another sightseeing stop to the itinerary.

Back to the guide ↑

Families, reduced mobility and practical packing

Family suitability depends on the complete stay: the road vehicle, boat, hotel access, room layout and water supervision. Give the provider the actual ages and number of children, and check the confirmed sleeping arrangement rather than assuming an extra bed will be available on arrival.

Follow the access route from beginning to end

For reduced mobility, ask about ferry passenger areas, steps, assistance and the hotel transfer vehicle. Then check the route from reception to the room, restaurant, pool and beach. A property can have a suitable bedroom while other essential parts of the stay are difficult to reach.

Beachside and hillside categories can differ substantially in effort. Request a detailed description or recent photographs of the access path. A more expensive room is not automatically the more accessible one, and a ground-floor label does not establish the absence of steps elsewhere.

Pack for two kinds of day

Bring what you need for both a boat or beach day and an outing on wet uneven ground. Keep essential documents, medication and electronics with you during transfers, protected from incidental rain or spray. A light layer can also be useful in air-conditioned vehicles.

Download hotel details and transport confirmations, and make sure someone in the party can contact the provider without searching through an online inbox. A locally usable data option can help with those practical tasks, but check device compatibility and the plan’s coverage and validity before buying. Do not assume every eSIM supports ordinary voice calls.

Back to the guide ↑

Responsible activities and a lighter impact

Choose activities that explain their safety procedures and environmental expectations clearly. On a snorkelling outing, do not stand on coral, feed marine animals or chase them for photographs. Follow the crew’s instructions about where to enter and how to behave around other groups. [12]

Judge animal activities carefully

Do not treat close contact with an animal as a required part of a Thailand holiday. You can build a varied Koh Chang visit around beaches, guided walks, villages and boat excursions without purchasing a wildlife interaction. Marketing terms alone do not establish good welfare conditions, so investigate the actual practices before considering an animal-related activity.

Keep everyday choices manageable

Carry a refillable bottle where suitable drinking-water refills are available, reduce disposable packaging and take litter back from quieter stops. Respect residential and working areas rather than treating every pier or village as a photo set. Ask before photographing people closely and avoid obstructing access while taking pictures.

These choices do not require turning the holiday into a complicated project. They are small habits that reduce nuisance and help keep a place enjoyable for the people who live and work there as well as those visiting briefly.

Back to the guide ↑

Adding another island or a mainland stop

Koh Mak and Koh Kood may appear in wider eastern-Gulf itineraries, but connections should be researched for the actual season and date. Do not assume a regular direct service operates simply because two islands look close. Some operator arrangements are seasonal or depend on a particular excursion programme. [12]

Use a transfer day, not a spare hour

Before booking the next room, establish the boat route, departure point, baggage conditions and final hotel transfer. A journey that requires returning to the mainland is different from a direct inter-island crossing. Keep the day light enough to absorb a change rather than scheduling an activity immediately after arrival.

For a shorter holiday, staying longer on Koh Chang may be more satisfying than adding another island. Repacking and repeating transfers has a real cost in time and energy. Add a second destination when its different experience is worth that cost, not merely to increase the number of places on the itinerary.

Mainland nights can be useful

A Trat or Bangkok overnight can break up the return and protect an important flight. Choose its location according to the next departure, not only the room price. A hotel that requires another long cross-city journey early the following morning may not provide the simplicity you were seeking.

Back to the guide ↑

Pros, cons and common mistakes

Why choose Koh Chang?

Koh Chang offers enough variety to combine beaches with boat trips and inland outings, while still allowing a relaxed one-base holiday. Different coastal areas suit different routines, and flying to Trat provides an alternative to the long mainland road stage. It works best when you give it several nights and choose accommodation that fits your everyday needs. [1] [5]

What are the compromises?

The transfer is substantial, the island’s terrain makes some journeys less simple than the map suggests, and wet-season conditions can limit beach or boat plans. A remote room may create dependence on resort meals and private transport. Ferry queues also matter on busy days, particularly for vehicles.

The recurring mistakes are booking the wrong Koh Chang, treating a Trat flight as arrival on the island, assuming a complete road loop, and using a short ferry crossing to justify a tight flight connection. Another is choosing accommodation that effectively requires scooter riding when you are not prepared to ride safely and properly covered.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights are enough for Koh Chang?

Four nights is a useful starting point for an overland Bangkok trip, providing three full days between arrival and departure. Three nights can work with a well-timed connection, while a week suits travellers who enjoy alternating activities and quiet days. The right length depends on how much of the holiday you want to devote to the transfer and whether a second destination would genuinely add value.

Is Koh Chang covered by the current Cambodia border warning?

The checked FCDO advice concerns travel within 20 kilometres of the Cambodia land border, and its update history records removal of the earlier island-specific restriction in February 2026. Check the live advice and insurance conditions again before travel. Do not assume that a separate onward land-border crossing is open simply because your island stay is proceeding. [2] [3]

Is there an airport on Koh Chang?

The flight option discussed here arrives at Trat airport on the mainland. You then continue by road, ferry and an island transfer to the hotel. A flight can shorten the mainland road stage, but its duration is not the complete Bangkok-to-hotel journey. Arrange the onward transfer and check how it handles a delayed flight. [5]

Do I need a scooter to enjoy the island?

No. Choose accommodation near suitable meals and a beach, then use hotel transport, local rides or a private driver for selected outings. Scooter rental should depend on genuine riding ability, the appropriate licence and insurance, not on a belief that independence requires it. A base that reduces daily transport can make the holiday both easier and more enjoyable.

Which area is best for a first visit?

White Sand Beach, Klong Prao and Kai Bae are sensible starting points for comparing established west-coast accommodation. Choose according to room position, outside meals, beach access and the kind of evening you want. A quieter southern or eastern property can be excellent when its transport and resort-led routine are what you are deliberately seeking. [1]

Can I swim throughout the year?

Do not use the season alone to decide. Read flags and local advice, assess the conditions at the particular beach and avoid entering during warnings. An operating ferry or a calm hotel pool does not establish that the sea is suitable. Children and less confident swimmers need close supervision regardless of how shallow the water appears. [4]

Are ferry tickets and hotel transfers the same booking?

Not necessarily. A standalone ferry ticket covers the crossing under its own conditions, while a combined transport package may include mainland and island stages. Read the endpoints and inclusions carefully. Confirm whether your vehicle crosses with you or whether you change transport, and do not assume an island arrival means delivery to every hotel. [8]

Can I visit Koh Chang and Koh Kood in one week?

It may be possible, but the value depends on confirmed seasonal connections and how much time you are willing to spend transferring. Check the actual route before booking both hotels. For a relaxed week, one island with several unhurried days can be better than dividing the time into short stays with an uncertain middle connection.

Is a waterfall a good rainy-day alternative?

Only when the site is open and local conditions permit. Heavy rain can affect paths, water levels and swimming safety, so a waterfall is not automatically the safe substitute for a cancelled boat trip. Follow ranger advice and choose a sheltered resort or restaurant day when both sea and inland outings are unsuitable. [13]

Should I return to Bangkok the day before flying home?

That is the more robust arrangement when the flight is early, infrequent or expensive to miss. A same-day connection must allow for the island road, ferry queue, crossing, mainland journey and the airline’s airport-arrival requirement. A private driver can simplify the handovers but cannot remove all disruption. Compare the extra night’s cost with the consequence of losing the flight.

The recommendation: give Koh Chang room in the itinerary

Choose Koh Chang when you can give it several nights and want a mix of beach time, a carefully selected excursion and the option of an inland outing. Start with a practical west-coast base unless a quieter resort setting is a deliberate priority. Then arrange the arrival and return as complete journeys, not isolated ferry or flight segments.

The most enjoyable plan is usually less ambitious than the longest attraction list. One suitable hotel, a few well-chosen activities, current safety checks and enough flexibility for weather can produce a richer holiday than repeatedly crossing the island to keep up with a schedule.

Sources and fact-checking notes

Official FCDO advice and its update record are used to distinguish the present land-border zone from earlier island restrictions. Ferry adult prices have corroboration, but child rates conflict and require confirmation. The waterfall price is explicitly a secondary-source reference, not a newly verified official tariff. Seasonal descriptions are not forecasts.
