Indonesia Public Holidays and Religious Festivals: What Travellers Need to Plan

Separate the date on the calendar from the effect on your hotel, transfer and access to a celebration.

2027 official calendarNyepi: 8 March 2027Review: 2 November 2026

An original illustration of a quiet Balinese setting, not a photograph of a particular ceremony or its visitor arrangements.

Indonesia public holidays can change a trip in two different ways: more people may be travelling, or a particular place may operate under special restrictions. Those are not the same problem. A busy train corridor calls for a reservation and flexibility; Bali’s Nyepi calls for a plan to remain at your accommodation rather than move around the island. [1][2][3]

The government has published the 2027 national-holiday and collective-leave calendar. Its standout planning issue is the close timing of Nyepi on Monday 8 March and Idulfitri on Wednesday and Thursday 10–11 March. This guide uses those announced dates while keeping them separate from transport operating notices and final religious determinations. [1][2]

National calendar

A public holiday does not establish that every attraction or business closes.

Collective leave

Cuti bersama can extend travel periods; private employers set implementation.

Local restrictions

Bali’s Nyepi affects movement in a way an ordinary holiday does not.

Final confirmation

A calendar date is not an airline, ferry or ceremony operating notice.

Indonesia public holidays: three calendars to check

Use the official national calendar as the starting point. Then add collective leave and local events. The government describes collective leave, or cuti bersama, separately from public holidays; private-sector implementation is determined by employers, and essential services must arrange staffing. Do not read the calendar as an instruction that every restaurant, hotel, bank counter or attraction has identical opening hours. [2]

What each calendar tells a traveller

Collective leaveAdjacent days that may extend a break.Your transport and accommodation providers for availability and terms.
Regional or religious eventThe local venue, access rules, procession and transport arrangements.Local authorities, the venue, your host or the operator.

A date falling on a Sunday is not a reason to invent a Monday replacement holiday. Use the dates actually announced. Equally, a festival absent from the national calendar can still matter greatly in the village or district you plan to visit.

For travel before the end of 2026, the announced Christmas collective leave is Thursday 24 December and Christmas Day is Friday 25 December. Together with the weekend, that creates a four-day planning window through Sunday 27 December. It is an arithmetic reading of the official calendar, not a forecast of demand on your exact route. [4]

The official 2027 national-holiday calendar

The table below follows the government’s published 2027 schedule, checked on 2 November 2026. There are 18 national-holiday days, with Idulfitri occupying two dates. The associated collective-leave dates are listed separately. Religious determinations for the start of Ramadan and the relevant Eid observances remain subject to the Minister of Religious Affairs’ decisions. [1][2]

The eight collective-leave dates are 5 February; 9, 12 and 15 March; 25 March; 18 and 19 May; and 24 December. In particular, 18–19 May bridges Iduladha and Waisak in the calendar. That merits a route and reservation check without assuming every worker takes the same break. [1][2]

Keep the year visible when saving a calendar. A search result about Nyepi in March 2026 cannot establish a 2027 airport closure, and an old festival article may still rank prominently after its event has passed. Check the date of the event as well as the date of the webpage.

The March 2027 overlap: a ten-day route-planning test

From Saturday 6 March to Monday 15 March, the calendar runs through a weekend, Nyepi, collective leave, two Idulfitri dates, further leave, another weekend and a final leave day. The ten-day span is calculated inclusively from the official dates. It does not mean the whole country observes Bali’s restrictions or that all ten dates are national holidays. [1][2]

Calendar from 6 to 15 March 2027 distinguishing weekends, Nyepi and Idulfitri public holidays, and collective-leave dates.
Original timeline calculated from the announced 2027 government calendar. The sequence does not represent a nationwide shutdown or confirmed transport availability.

Test an itinerary against that sequence before choosing flights. A plan to leave Bali on 8 March is fundamentally different from a plan to remain at the same hotel. A Java train journey around Idulfitri needs a reservation strategy, but not a blanket assumption that all transport stops.

Three traveller scenarios

Editorial planning choices, not predictions of live availability
Your constraintMore workable approachWhat to confirm
Only one week and several fixed transfersConsider dates outside the overlap or reduce the number of bases.Every transport leg before making non-refundable commitments.
You actively want a quiet Nyepi staySettle into one Bali property before the observance.Meals, permitted movement, lighting, communications and assistance.
You must travel on Java near IdulfitriBuild the route around confirmed seats, not a last-minute flexible outline.Ticket release, departure point, baggage and arrival transfer.

For a Bali stay, arriving at the chosen base by Saturday 6 March is a conservative editorial buffer that leaves a day before Nyepi. It is not a government deadline. An earlier arrival may suit a remote property; a later one needs confidence in the local arrangements and the effect of preparations.

Run your proposed nights and transfer estimates through the Itinerary Pace Checker to expose a route with no slack. Treat its output as a pacing prompt, not proof that a ferry or flight operates during a religious observance.

Nyepi in Bali: choose the accommodation before the room rate

Official tourism guidance describes Nyepi as a period of quiet when visitors remain within their accommodation and normal travel stops. FCDO guidance also explains that Bali’s airport closes and movement is restricted, with emergency arrangements distinct from ordinary activity. Those general practices matter to visitors regardless of their religion. [3][5]

The 2027 national calendar confirms 8 March, but the exact 2027 airport, harbour, road and communications notices must still be checked with the relevant authorities and operators. Do not lift a previous year’s start and finish times into a new booking. This guide has not verified a complete set of 2027 operational closure notices.

Ask the hotel a specific set of questions

Ask which meals will be available, whether advance orders are required, how dietary needs are handled, which parts of the property guests may use and what lighting or noise restrictions apply. Establish how to contact staff and obtain urgent help. A room-only rate may not answer these needs, while a package name alone does not prove that every meal is included.

Compare the whole Nyepi stay

Compare Bali properties on Agoda and check Bali accommodation on Booking.com. These are destination searches, not confirmed Nyepi packages. Contact the selected property about your dates and obtain its arrangements in writing before booking. [6][7]

Do not plan a beach walk, taxi transfer or impromptu food delivery as a workaround. Use the quiet period intentionally: bring something to read, save necessary information offline and agree expectations with everyone in your party. For travellers who need routine independent movement, different dates or a different destination may be the better choice.

Idulfitri, mudik and Ramadan: plan beyond the two holiday dates

The Ministry of Transport’s 2026 Lebaran operation covered a wider period than the holiday itself, reflecting outbound and return travel. That is evidence that holiday transport planning extends beyond the celebration dates, not a published traffic plan for 2027. Do not reuse a 2026 road restriction or ferry arrangement as if it applies next year. [8]

For an intercity journey, establish the actual operator, station or port, ticket-release arrangements and cancellation conditions. Book the critical leg first, then align the hotel and local transfer. Avoid a tight connection between separately booked services when a delay would leave you with no practical alternative.

A genuine route comparison

For a Jakarta–Yogyakarta journey, compare the route options on 12Go. The route page lists transport categories, but your selected dates determine what can actually be booked. Compare the chosen service with its operator’s own terms and confirm the precise departure and arrival points. [9]

Ramadan also calls for local consideration. FCDO advises respecting people who are fasting and notes that routines and opening hours may change. Ask your accommodation about meal arrangements and be discreet around religious observance rather than assuming every neighbourhood follows the same visitor-facing schedule. [3]

For a late arrival, arrange food and your transfer rather than relying on a restaurant being open at the usual time. This is especially useful when the accommodation is away from a main visitor area. It is a contingency choice, not a claim that all restaurants close during Ramadan.

Regional festivals: attendance is not automatic access

Galungan and Kuningan in Bali follow the Pawukon cycle rather than a fixed Gregorian date. Badung’s official tourism information describes the 210-day cycle and Kuningan ten days after Galungan. Check the dates and arrangements for the actual year and community you intend to visit. [10]

A ceremony can be significant locally without appearing as a nationwide public holiday. Ask a local host whether visitors are welcome, where to stand, what to wear and when photography is inappropriate. A street decoration or procession is not permission to enter a private compound or join a ritual.

Waisak is listed on 20 May in the 2027 national calendar. That date does not confirm a particular temple’s visitor programme, ticket access or an advertised lantern event. Treat those as separate, venue-specific questions. Likewise, Chinese New Year, Christmas and regional celebrations should be checked against the place you are actually visiting rather than a generic national festival list. [1][2]

Two separate confirmations

Confirm that the event is happening on the date you expect. Then confirm that the part you hope to attend is open to visitors. A correct date alone does not answer the access question.

Three checks: official event date, the provider operating on that date, and final local notices close to travel.
An original holiday-planning checklist. Use separate confirmation for the calendar, the service and any final local restrictions.

A booking sequence and the remaining questions

Start with the dates, identify the one transfer or activity that cannot easily move, and verify that item before committing to the rest. Next ask the accommodation about holiday operations. Finally, reconfirm transport and local notices close to departure. Keep copies of the replies with your booking confirmations.

Are there really two Isra Mi’raj entries in 2027?

Yes. The government’s list includes 5 January for 1448 Hijri and 26 December for 1449 Hijri. Do not remove the second entry as an assumed duplicate. [1][2]

Does a public holiday mean every attraction is closed?

No single calendar entry answers that. Ask the attraction for the intended date and check any local restrictions. Essential-service staffing and private-sector collective leave have their own arrangements. [2]

Should I avoid Indonesia throughout a religious festival?

Not necessarily. A settled stay with appropriate expectations can work better than an ordinary week overloaded with transfers. The harder combination is a short, inflexible trip whose key movements fall on dates you have not checked.

How early should I book?

There is no single reliable number of days for every airline, railway, boat and hotel. Check the actual release window and change terms for the service you need. A promise that booking a fixed number of months ahead always solves availability would be misleading.

Plan for the effect, not just the name

For 2027, examine the March overlap first. For Bali, make Nyepi an intentional stay rather than a transfer day. Elsewhere, match each holiday to the route, property and activity it affects, then retain enough flexibility to use the information you receive.
