Indonesia Entry Requirements for British Travellers: Visa and Arrival Checklist
Three separate tasks, one organised arrival: visa, declaration and any Bali levy.
Original arrival-planning illustration; not a photograph of a specific airport or an official travel document.
Indonesia entry requirements for British travellers are easier to manage when you stop treating every online form as a visa. The permission to enter, the arrival declaration and Bali’s visitor levy perform different jobs. Paying one does not complete the others.
This guide is for ordinary tourism using a full British-citizen passport. It is not a determination for other British nationality categories, emergency travel documents, employment, study, volunteering or long-term residence. The checklist below helps you organise the evidence; Indonesian authorities decide admission. [1]

Six months from arrival; two blank pages.
B1: up to 30 days, not a calendar month.
All Indonesia is free; it is not the visa.
The provincial levy is a separate payment.
Indonesia entry requirements: start with the right checklist
| Question | Ordinary short holiday | When to stop and obtain advice |
|---|---|---|
| Which passport are you using? | A full British-citizen passport | Another nationality category or a temporary / emergency document |
| Why are you travelling? | Tourism within the permitted visitor activities | Work, volunteering, commercial content or a purpose outside the visa conditions |
| How long will you stay? | Within the permission actually granted | More than 30 days without an appropriate visa or completed extension |
| Where will you enter? | A checkpoint offering the chosen visa facility | An unusual port, land crossing or private-vessel arrival |
| Will you visit Bali? | Check the separate provincial levy | Do not assume the visa receipt covers it |
The B1 rules distinguish a national passport from other travel documents and describe a single-entry permission. The embassy also instructs travellers to verify that the arrival checkpoint provides the visa-on-arrival facility. A route through a major hub is not proof that a different port offers the same service. [3][1]
Resolve any exception before buying a non-refundable itinerary. Write down your nationality, document type, arrival checkpoint, intended activities and planned departure date before contacting immigration or the embassy. A precise question is more likely to produce a useful answer than asking whether a visa is needed for Indonesia.

Inspect the passport before filling in forms
Check the expiry date against your Indonesian arrival date, not the day you leave the UK. FCDO specifies at least six months remaining and two blank pages. A passport previously reported lost or stolen should not be used even when you later find it. [2]
Inspect the identity page, binding and blank pages in good light. Water damage or tears can cause problems; Australian government advice specifically warns that Indonesian authorities apply strict passport-condition standards. Raise concerns with the airline and the relevant passport authority before departure rather than seeking reassurance at check-in. [5]
Use the passport details exactly as required by the official application. After renewal, check that flight reservations, visa records and arrival information refer to the document you will actually carry. Do not assume an approval issued against an old number will automatically transfer.
For each traveller, keep a secure copy separate from the original. A copy helps you retrieve details and report a problem, but it does not replace the original passport at the border. Avoid putting passport scans into shared holiday spreadsheets or publicly accessible cloud folders.
Choose the visa route before the departure countdown
The published B1 fee is Rp500,000, with an initial stay of up to 30 days and one possible extension to a maximum total of 60 days. The e-visa’s window for entering the country is different from the length of stay permitted after entry. Read both fields on the issued document. [3]
An eligible traveller may obtain the visitor visa at a suitable arrival checkpoint or apply in advance through the official immigration service. Online preparation can move paperwork away from the airport; it does not remove document checks or guarantee admission. FCDO advises applying at least a week before travel and ensuring approval is issued before arrival. [2]
For the online route, prepare the passport identity-page image, a recent photograph and the onward or return booking requested by immigration. Review spelling and numbers before payment. Retain the issued visa and payment confirmation, not merely a screenshot showing that an application was submitted. [3]
The official transaction portal may require a normal browser, verification checks or a working payment card. This guide has not submitted an application or tested a payment. A failed browser session is not evidence of a refused visa; use the official support route and avoid repeatedly paying a lookalike website.
Prepare onward travel, accommodation and an honest purpose
The embassy’s visitor guidance requires an onward or return ticket and a purpose permitted under the visa. Keep the complete reservation accessible, with the traveller name and departure details visible. A domestic flight from Bali to Java is not a journey out of Indonesia. [1]
For your first stay, save the accommodation name, full address, contact number and booking confirmation. When accommodation changes, keep the updated details together. These records make it easier to answer practical questions accurately; they are not a guarantee that a particular officer will ask for the same documents.
For a private-accommodation stay, FCDO says you must register your presence with the local police; hotels handle registration for their guests. Ask the host how this will be arranged rather than assuming that every rental follows the hotel process. [2]
Do not purchase an artificial onward document or assume that an agent can make an ineligible activity acceptable. Commercial online content, influencer work and volunteering can fall outside ordinary tourist permission. The Australian government’s guidance explicitly cautions that creating commercial content during a visit can be an issue even if it is published later. Obtain advice for the actual work rather than calling it a holiday. [5]
Make a short document index for your travelling party: passport, visa, onward ticket and first-stay details. Review each person individually. One successful application or payment does not establish that everybody in the booking has completed their own requirements.
Complete the free All Indonesia arrival declaration
All Indonesia combines immigration-arrival, customs, health and quarantine declarations. The immigration tutorial permits completion from three days before arrival through the arrival day; current UK advice describes the window as within 72 hours of arrival. Use your Indonesian local arrival date when following the form. [6][2]
The official tutorial asks for personal details, journey information, transport details and the relevant declarations. It describes email verification for foreign visitors and a resulting QR code that can be downloaded. Have access to the email account during completion and save the result offline. [6]
Complete the customs and quarantine answers truthfully. Read the form’s current instructions for food, animal or plant products and anything else being carried; do not reuse another person’s answers. Immigration explains that this integrated system replaces the separate electronic customs declaration where implemented, rather than adding a second paid customs form. [4]
Before leaving Wi-Fi, confirm that you can open the saved result without an internet connection. Keep a phone charged and carry a paper backup when that is useful for your circumstances. Do not rely on airport connectivity as the only place where you can retrieve a document.
Visiting Bali: check the separate tourist levy
The Indonesian embassy lists a Rp150,000 levy per foreign tourist entering Bali, paid through the provincial government’s designated channels. Certain categories have exemptions, so travellers with a special status should check the official criteria instead of assuming that ordinary tourism is exempt. [1]
For a normal adult tourist using the B1 route and visiting Bali, the two base charges total Rp650,000: Rp500,000 for the visa plus Rp150,000 for the levy. Two such adults should therefore account for Rp1,300,000 before payment-service or currency-conversion charges. The All Indonesia form adds no government declaration fee. This is arithmetic, not a packaged arrival service. [3][1][4]
Save the payment confirmation with the travel documents. A visa receipt is not evidence that the levy has been paid. Likewise, a levy payment does not grant immigration permission.
Routes involving repeat entry, exemption claims or unusual travel documents deserve a direct check of the current provincial rules. Do not infer the treatment of a return visit from the simple one-visit calculation above.
Check health and medicines against your actual journey
TravelHealthPro states that Indonesia has a yellow-fever certificate requirement for travellers aged nine months or older arriving from countries with a transmission risk. This is not a universal vaccination requirement for every traveller starting in the UK. A wider multi-country route can change what applies; ask a travel-health professional about the complete itinerary. [7]
Entry certificates and recommended travel vaccinations are different questions. The same consultation should consider destinations, activities, existing conditions and the time available before departure. FCDO recommends checking health preparation at least eight weeks beforehand; seeking advice later is still worthwhile. [8]
Medicines that are routine in the UK may be regulated differently elsewhere. Check the specific medicine and amount with official advice, keep it in its original packaging, and carry suitable supporting documentation. A prescription alone should not be treated as automatic permission for every substance. [8]
For the declaration, use the current customs and quarantine instructions rather than an old packing blog. Where you are unsure whether an item must be declared, obtain an answer before travel. An honest, documented check is more useful than trying to memorise a long list of allowances that may change.
Longer stays need time for the extension procedure
Do not read an online extension option as a promise that the entire process happens online. Ngurah Rai Immigration’s published procedure, effective from 29 May 2025, requires a photograph and interview at the immigration office after online submission, including for visa-on-arrival holders. Allow for the appointment and follow the current instructions for your case. [9]
Build any extension around where you will physically be, rather than fitting it between remote islands. Start early enough to correct a document problem or attend the required office. The existence of an application does not, by itself, prove a longer stay has been granted.
Check the final date on the stay permission as soon as you receive it. Immigration counts the B1 stay from arrival. In a simple 30-day example, arriving on 1 November makes 30 November the thirtieth calendar day; 1 December would be day 31. Use the actual permission as the controlling record. [3]

A cancelled flight is a reason to contact immigration promptly, not a reason to assume an automatic extension. Leave a practical margin before the final authorised date and keep a record of official instructions. Do not treat a possible overstay penalty as an alternative to lawful permission.
A departure-day check that catches avoidable mistakes
| Item | Evidence to open now | Common mismatch |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Original document | Renewed number differs from visa or booking |
| Visa | Issued approval or correct arrival plan | Application receipt mistaken for approval |
| Departure from Indonesia | Onward / return reservation | Domestic segment mistaken for an international exit |
| Arrival declaration | Saved submission result | Departure date used instead of local arrival date |
| First accommodation | Address and confirmation | Old hotel details after a change |
| Bali levy, where applicable | Separate payment record | Visa payment assumed to cover both |
A data connection can help you contact accommodation after landing, but it should be optional for retrieving essential documents. Compare your mobile provider’s roaming terms first; browse Airalo for an Indonesia-compatible eSIM only when the phone and plan are suitable. Airalo requires a compatible, unlocked device. This link opens its store, not an immigration service. [10]
Does the arrival declaration replace the visa?
No. It records arrival, customs, health and quarantine information. Immigration permission comes from the appropriate visa and stay permission. Treat the documents as separate tasks. [4]
Do I need a special commercial visa agent for an ordinary holiday?
An agent is not automatically necessary for an eligible visitor who can use the official process. For an unusual passport or purpose, seek a specific answer from the authorities. Avoid assuming that a higher service fee buys entry permission.
Can I stay for one calendar month on a 30-day permission?
Plan by counted days and the actual authorised expiry. Calendar months vary in length, and arrival-day counting matters. Schedule departure with margin instead of using the phrase one month as your calculation. [3]
What should I do when two sources differ?
Use the current instructions of the responsible Indonesian authority and ask for clarification where necessary. For example, online submission and an in-person extension appointment can both be required; they are not mutually exclusive. [9]
