Getting Around Bali: Private Driver, Scooter or Ride-Hailing?
Match the vehicle to the journey, compare the whole cost, and leave room for the road.
Original illustration of a car and parked scooter in a Balinese village. It depicts generic transport choices rather than a particular rental provider or verified location.
Getting around Bali is easier when you choose transport for each part of the trip. A hotel move with luggage, a short dinner journey and a day with several countryside stops ask different things of a vehicle and driver. You do not need to commit to one transport method for the entire holiday.
This guide compares the decisions that change the experience: whether someone waits for you, how the fare is calculated, where the car can collect you, what fits inside it and whether riding a scooter is an appropriate option at all. The recommendations and cost model are planning judgements; advertised provider examples are identified separately.

Choose transport by the journey
Start with the shape of the day. A one-way transfer buys a journey between agreed places. A charter buys a vehicle and driver for an agreed period and area. Ride-hailing normally starts with a specific requested journey. Those are different services, even when a similar car arrives.

| Your situation | A useful starting choice | The main check |
|---|---|---|
| Changing hotels with cases | Prebooked private car | Both hotel entrances, luggage space and any stops must be in the quote. |
| Several countryside attractions | Dedicated driver or suitable car charter | Agree the operating area, waiting time and final return. |
| Dinner or a short local outing | App car or registered taxi | Check the pickup point, live fare and return options. |
| Experienced rider making light local journeys | Rental scooter, if all riding checks are met | Correct entitlement, permit, insurance and a sound helmet. |
| Solo traveller considering a motorcycle taxi | Assess the passenger journey separately | A helmet and suitable cover still matter; luggage and exposure may make a car preferable. |
| Children, a mobility aid or large bags | Prearranged vehicle of a confirmed size | Request the actual restraint, access or storage arrangement before paying. |

A driver can be worth arranging for one specific day even when you use apps on the others. Equally, a full-day charter adds little value when you want one short ride and then several hours at your hotel. Choose the service after deciding what the day contains.
What to agree with a private driver
Send a short written brief rather than asking only for a “Bali driver price”. Name the date, pickup time, both hotel pins, number of adults and children, bags, proposed stops and latest acceptable arrival. Ask the supplier to confirm that the route fits the quoted service.
- Vehicle: usable passenger seats with seat belts, luggage space, air-conditioning and any child restraint or mobility-aid requirement.
- Duration: when paid time starts, whether waiting counts, the finish point and overtime charge.
- Area: permitted pickup and drop-off locations, and charges for a longer or different route.
- Inclusions: fuel, tolls, parking, driver expenses and any other compulsory charges.
- Visits: which stops are agreed, whether admission is extra, and whether guiding inside an attraction is included.
- Practicalities: cancellation terms, a contact if the driver is delayed, and how a changed plan is priced.
For a hotel move, clarify who watches the vehicle while you stop and whether bags can be concealed. Carry passports, money, medicine and essential electronics with you. If the driver cannot safely stay with the car, a luggage-free sightseeing day may work better.
Two bookable charter examples
The GetYourGuide option below describes a 10–11-hour private service for up to four passengers, with pickup from specified areas. Agree your itinerary and luggage fit before booking. [11]
Compare this full-day private driver option on GetYourGuide.
The Viator option describes a ten-hour custom tour with fuel and parking included, while attraction admission is extra. Its stated car capacity falls from five travellers without luggage to three with luggage; other areas and extra hours can cost more. [12]
Check the Bali design-your-own car tour on Viator.
These are comparison examples. Select the appropriate vehicle and your whole party before assessing the total, and obtain confirmation for a one-way hotel change rather than assuming that every sightseeing charter includes it.
Using Grab, Gojek and registered taxis
GrabCar and GoCar are car services; GrabBike and GoRide are motorcycle services. [17] Select the vehicle you intend to use. Grab shows a price before booking but notes that tolls and surcharges can be additional. Gojek lists Bali in its GoCar service area. [3] [4]
A service-area listing does not promise an available driver at your exact pin. For a time-sensitive pickup, check whether a driver has actually accepted and keep a workable alternative. For an ordinary local ride, send a brief description of the entrance if the map pin is unclear, then wait at the agreed safe meeting point.
Gojek’s booking instructions list cash and several cashless methods. Set up your account and try your intended payment method before relying on it for an important journey. [5] MyBluebird offers metered and fixed-price arrangements; check the selected fare basis and extra charges in the app. [7]
Match the driver and vehicle to the booking, and use the app’s journey-sharing feature where available. The FCDO advises using registered taxi companies and checking the driver’s identity. [1]
A car booked for hours is a separate product
GrabRent books a driver for a stated duration. Its current terms require cashless payment, allow surcharges beyond the displayed fare and restrict changes after booking. Advance booking can still be cancelled if no driver accepts. Check the service details shown for your route, and make booking changes through the app. [6]
Do not book a basic point-to-point ride and assume the driver will wait through lunch and two attractions. Choose a suitable multi-stop or hourly product, or agree a charter through a supplier that explicitly offers it.
Four checks before renting a scooter
A low daily rate answers only the price question. A scooter can suit an established rider travelling light, but it should not be the default solution to a holiday budget or the place to learn in traffic.
1. Riding entitlement and documents
For UK licence holders, GOV.UK currently lists a 1968 International Driving Permit for Indonesia; carry it with your valid national licence. The FCDO says a UK licence alone is insufficient and requires the appropriate licence for the vehicle. Check that your motorcycle entitlement covers the scooter you intend to hire: an IDP does not add motorcycle entitlement to a car-only licence. [1] [2]
Other nationalities should check the requirements through their own licensing authority and Indonesian guidance. A rental handover is not a substitute for those checks.
2. The cover you actually need
Ask your travel insurer about riding or travelling as a passenger, engine limits, medical treatment and repatriation. Separately check rental damage, theft, liability and excess terms. Bikago, for example, describes damage-and-theft cover as an optional addition; that description does not establish what your own medical policy covers. [1] [10]
3. Experience and equipment
The FCDO reports a rise in serious motorbike and moped accidents in Bali and advises a helmet in good condition. [1] Choose one that fits and fastens properly. Inspect the vehicle, photograph existing damage and obtain the breakdown contact. If the controls, condition or conditions make you uneasy, choose a car.
4. The day you intend to ride
Heavy luggage, young children, unfamiliar mountain roads, darkness or poor weather change the decision. A motorcycle taxi removes the need to ride yourself but still leaves you exposed to the road and weather. For a family hotel move, arrange an appropriate car and restraints instead.
What the price actually covers
The following are published reference points checked on 1 November 2026, not quotes for your dates. They illustrate different charging units; they are not interchangeable offers.
Swipe sideways to see all columns.
| Option | Published reference or pricing method | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Private car with English-speaking driver | Bali Made Tour lists IDR 600,000 for six hours or IDR 750,000 for ten hours in a regular car. [8] | The listed area, passenger/luggage capacity and extra hours. Fuel and parking are included; admissions and meals are extra. |
| Rental scooter | Arka lists the All New Honda Vario 125cc at IDR 90,000 for a daily rental. [9] | Dates, collection, fuel, deposit, damage cover, excess and riding eligibility. |
| App car or motorcycle ride | Quote the actual pins, time and selected service in the app. [3] [5] | Unincluded tolls or fees, vehicle type and whether a driver accepts. |
| Registered taxi | Metered or fixed-price basis, depending on the booked service. [7] | The fare basis, compulsory fees and correct destination. |
Compare per vehicle with per vehicle, or divide both totals by the same number of people who will actually share. Do not compare one person’s motorcycle fare with the price of a whole car. A larger vehicle may be necessary once bags or child seats are included.
A fair whole-day cost comparison
This worked example uses invented inputs to show the calculation, not live app fares. Assume two adults share one suitable car, make four journeys on the same itinerary and have no large luggage. The private-driver quote is assumed to cover the entire agreed day and all transport extras.
Swipe sideways to see all columns.
| Illustrative option | Calculation | IDR total |
|---|---|---|
| Four individual app-car rides | 120,000 + 180,000 + 180,000 + 120,000 | 600,000 |
| Additional app-trip fees | Allowance for charges excluded from those fares | 40,000 |
| App-car day total | 600,000 + 40,000 | 640,000 |
| Dedicated driver day | Assumed all-inclusive written quote | 800,000 |
| Extra cost of the dedicated driver | 800,000 − 640,000 | 160,000 |
| Extra per person, two sharing | 160,000 ÷ 2 | 80,000 |

In this example the driver costs more, so the useful question is whether confirmed waiting and an agreed return are worth IDR 80,000 each. With the same IDR 40,000 of extra app fees, the arithmetic breaks even when the four base fares average IDR 190,000: (800,000 − 40,000) ÷ 4. Replace every input with comparable current quotes.
Cost is only one test. Several successful outward rides do not guarantee a car for the last journey home. Conversely, paying for a driver does not remove traffic or extend the booking indefinitely. Confirm both the return and the quoted time limit.
For shared payments, use the Group Holiday Cost Splitter after agreeing who contributes. It supports currencies including GBP rather than rupiah, so first convert all costs consistently using your actual transaction rates. It does not perform currency conversion or send money.
Plan time around the whole journey
Give the driver both real entrance pins. “Ubud”, “Canggu” and “Uluwatu” are useful place names for a holiday discussion, but they do not identify your villa’s gate. Ask the accommodation whether a normal car can reach the entrance and whether a meeting point or short luggage transfer is needed.
Build the day from five parts: loading, the current driving estimate, agreed stops, arrival tasks and a reserve. A map estimate describes one part of that chain. A morning departure can protect time for a long move, but there is no universal hour that makes every Bali journey congestion-free.
For example, a purely illustrative hotel move with 20 minutes to load, two hours allocated to driving, a 20-minute break, 20 minutes to check in and 40 minutes of reserve occupies 3 hours 40 minutes. If the driver revises the drive to three hours, the plan becomes 4 hours 40 minutes. Remove an optional stop before using up the entire reserve.
Use the Trip Itinerary Planner to lay out your bases and hotel moves. It organises the trip you enter; ask your driver or transport provider to assess the actual route. Avoid adding a prepaid activity immediately after a transfer simply because the calendar has a blank space.
Check festival arrangements with your accommodation. Nyepi requires staying indoors and the airport closes; plan hotel moves around the confirmed annual restrictions. [1]
Airport arrivals and hotel moves
Grab’s official airport help page lists service at Ngurah Rai Airport and directs passengers through its booth to the pickup location. Follow the instructions for your terminal and booked product rather than assuming a driver can stop outside any arrivals door. [13]
For a prebooked airport transfer, provide the flight number, passenger names requested by the supplier, luggage details and destination pin. Confirm when waiting time begins, what happens after a delayed landing, and how you will contact the driver after immigration and baggage collection.
Compare Denpasar Airport–Ubud road transfers on 12Go. The route page offers road options; select the appropriate car or scheduled service and verify the operator’s pickup and final drop-off details. A station or area label alone is not confirmation of delivery to your hotel. [14]
On departure day, work backwards from the airline’s required airport arrival time, then add the journey, loading and an appropriate traffic reserve. For a long drive from the north, consider moving south the previous day. That is a scheduling choice which reduces the number of things that must go right on flight day.
For hotel-to-hotel journeys, keep check-out and check-in times separate from pickup and arrival. Ask the receiving hotel about early luggage storage if needed. Confirm child seats in advance rather than relying on whichever car is nearest when you open an app.
Shared shuttles, local walking and staying connected
Perama advertises shared shuttles connecting places including Ubud, Canggu, Munduk and Lovina, with specified meeting points. Check the service for your date and both local connections before comparing its fare with a door-to-door car. [15]
For one traveller with light luggage, a confirmed shuttle can make sense. For several people, add each ticket and the journeys to and from the stops. The total may narrow the saving, while a private car gives you more control over departure and breaks.
A carefully chosen base can also reduce transport needs. Ask about the actual walking route to the restaurants or beach you intend to use, including crossings, lighting, steps and weather exposure. A short distance on a map does not establish a comfortable walk.
Mobile data helps with pickup messages and navigation. Browse Airalo and check its Indonesia plans; this link opens the store, so choose Indonesia and check device compatibility and plan terms before buying. [16] Download useful maps and save hotel pins and booking contacts while you have a reliable connection.
Questions that change the choice
Can a private driver take me sightseeing during a hotel move?
Yes, if the supplier accepts the changed pickup and drop-off, luggage and stopping plan. Agree the places and time allowance in writing. A return-to-hotel tour does not automatically include a different final destination.
Should the cheapest transport option decide where to stay?
Look at the total holiday instead. A lower room price can be offset by repeated journeys. Compare the hotel location with your actual days before committing; a convenient base may let you use a driver on fewer days.
Do I need a driver for the entire holiday?
Usually there is no need to book one simply because you want one substantial outing. Combine the services that fit your plans, and confirm whether a multi-day quote includes driver accommodation and any days with little or no travel.
What if no app driver accepts?
Use your agreed backup: ask the accommodation to arrange a registered taxi or a prebooked supplier. For a fixed deadline, set a cutoff for trying the app while another option remains workable.
Is hiring a self-drive car the same as hiring a driver?
No. Self-drive adds the responsibility for licensing, driving, parking and the rental contract. The prices and recommendations here concern cars with drivers unless explicitly described as scooter hire.
A practical transport mix for your trip
Begin with the journeys where uncertainty would be costly: arrival, hotel changes, a long countryside day and the airport return. Arrange those with clear pins, vehicle capacity and written terms. Use app cars or registered taxis for the simpler local trips where you can check the live options and have time to adapt.
If you are an appropriately licensed, insured and experienced rider, assess a scooter against the actual roads, luggage and conditions. For everyone else, build the budget around a suitable car. The useful saving is a holiday with fewer unnecessary journeys, not a transport plan that depends on every connection going perfectly.
