Two Weeks in Indonesia: Bali, Yogyakarta and East Java Route

A Java-first journey with time for temples, one volcano highlight and a slower finish in Bali.

14 local days · 13 nightsFive bases · four changesJava first, Bali last

AI-generated editorial illustration inspired by the Bromo landscape; it does not show current volcanic activity or permitted access routes.

Two weeks in Indonesia can combine Yogyakarta’s temples, East Java’s volcanic scenery and a Bali finish, provided the travelling days are counted honestly. This route starts in Yogyakarta, uses Surabaya as a practical overnight stop, spends two nights near Bromo, then continues to Ubud and Sanur.

The key assumption is 14 days in Indonesia and 13 hotel nights. International travel from and back to the UK sits outside that allowance. If your entire leave is two weeks, shorten the route after checking your flight dates. Otherwise, a holiday that looks balanced on a map can lose its breathing space before you arrive.

Best flight pattern

Into Yogyakarta, out of Denpasar; compare the complete multi-city fare.

The demanding day

Day 8 combines a mountain road transfer, a flight and the drive to Ubud.

The useful buffer

Two Bromo nights separate the early excursion from the airport journey.

The final base

Sanur keeps the last nights on mainland Bali before the flight home.

The 14-day route and the night count

Suggested order: 14 local days, 13 nights. Day numbers are not fixed weekdays.
DaysSleep hereNightsMain purpose
1–4Yogyakarta4Arrive, settle in, explore the city and give each major temple its own outing.
5Surabaya1Daylight train, dinner and a normal night’s sleep.
6–7Cemoro Lawang2Road approach to Bromo, permitted viewpoint excursion and recovery time.
8–10Ubud3Full travel day on day 8, then two days based in Ubud.
11–13Sanur3Move hotels on day 11, then two unhurried coastal days.
14No further night0Travel to Denpasar airport for departure.

The arithmetic is 4 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 3 = 13 nights. Five bases create four hotel changes, on days 5, 6, 8 and 11. After arrival and departure days, that leaves eight days without changing base: days 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 12 and 13. Temple outings still involve driving, and Bromo involves an early start; these are not eight entirely free sightseeing days.

The direction puts the more demanding Java section first and allows the holiday to ease towards the coast. It also avoids returning west to Yogyakarta solely to fly home. That is a route-planning preference, not a promise that a multi-city ticket will cost less.

Five-base Indonesia route: Yogyakarta for four nights, Surabaya for one, Cemoro Lawang near Bromo for two, Ubud for three and Sanur for three, with four changes of base.
Original route schematic, not a geographical map. The 13 hotel nights cover 14 local days, excluding international travel. Day 8 combines road travel to Surabaya airport (SUB), a flight to Denpasar (DPS) and the onward road transfer to Ubud; passing through Surabaya again does not add a hotel base. Depart from DPS on day 14. Java is UTC+7 and Bali UTC+8.

Days 1–4: Yogyakarta and two separate temple days

Day 1: arrive without a sightseeing commitment

Arrive at Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), transfer to your hotel and keep the evening simple. KAI Commuter has operated the Yogyakarta International Airport train since 17 September 2026, when it took over from Railink. The services’ published running times at handover were about 35 minutes for express trains and 39 minutes for regular trains; check today’s timetable and the current ticket channels. Add immigration, luggage, waiting and the final hotel journey. A train’s running time is not the airport-to-room time. [1] [19]

Choose a hotel where meals and your day-trip pickups will be convenient. You can compare Yogyakarta accommodation on Agoda; check the map and your arrival arrangements before choosing a room simply because it appears inexpensive.

Day 2: make time for the city

Start with the Kraton’s Kedhaton museum and leave room for a leisurely lunch and exploring nearby streets. The palace’s current visitor information lists Monday closure for Kedhaton, so swap days 2–4 to fit the actual week. Its dress rules also matter: wear sleeves and avoid shorts. [2]

Days 3 and 4: Borobudur, then Prambanan

Give Borobudur one outing and Prambanan another. Combining them can work, but this plan deliberately spends the fourth Yogyakarta night on a less compressed visit. Reserve the correct Borobudur product if you want to enter the temple structure. The official upper-area ticket includes a guide and special Upanat sandals, and the operator recommends arriving 30–45 minutes before your slot. Check the current calendar instead of relying on old blanket Monday-closure advice. [3]

For arranged transport, you can compare this Borobudur tour from Yogyakarta on GetYourGuide. The listing describes a five-hour return excursion with pickup. Confirm which admission, structure access and guide arrangement your selected option includes; do not assume the headline price includes every ticket. [5]

Visit Prambanan on the other day, leaving time for the wider complex. Its official ticket lists Lumbung, Bubrah and Sewu temples alongside Prambanan. Check the ticket calendar and keep your evening flexible before the following day’s train. [4]

Days 5–7: reach Bromo without an overnight rush

Day 5: train to Surabaya, then stop

Choose a daylight train and protect this as a travel day. Traveloka’s current timetable lists Sancaka services taking about four hours; your selected service and date determine the actual time. [18] You can compare Yogyakarta–Surabaya trains on 12Go; check the exact stations, baggage conditions and cancellation terms. [6] Add both hotel transfers before planning anything else.

The Surabaya night is a practical pause before the mountain journey. When you compare Surabaya hotels on Booking.com, choose somewhere convenient for the station arrival and the next morning’s driver pickup. Paying for a room here buys a proper break between two substantial moves.

Day 6: road transfer to Cemoro Lawang

Travel in daylight and leave the afternoon for settling in. Cemoro Lawang is the Bromo approach via Probolinggo; Tosari is a different approach via Pasuruan. A hotel advertised as “Bromo” may therefore be on another side of the mountain. Agree the exact hotel pin and pickup point with your driver and excursion organiser. [7]

Cemara Indah is one location example in Cemoro Lawang. Its own site lists restaurant facilities and help arranging jeep hire. Ask about your room’s hot water, bedding, access and early breakfast arrangements. Check Cemara Indah on Booking.com; this is a researched location example, not a claim of a personal stay or checked room availability. [9]

Day 7: one viewpoint excursion, then rest

Arrange a permitted Bromo viewpoint outing, subject to current conditions, and return to the same hotel afterwards. Confirm online national-park booking, collection time, jeep occupancy and what is included in the quote. Official rules require booking evidence and compliance with access restrictions. [8]

Keep outside the crater exclusion zone. PVMBG’s report for 31 October 2026 instructs visitors not to enter within 1 km of Bromo’s active crater. [17] Check the latest bulletin and obey local restrictions; FCDO stresses that exclusion zones can change. [10] This itinerary uses an allowed viewpoint, not a crater ascent. Pack warm layers, a light and suitable footwear, and keep the rest of the day gentle. A sunrise view is weather-dependent.

Day 8: give the Java-to-Bali transfer a full day

The sequence is Cemoro Lawang → Surabaya airport (SUB) → Denpasar (DPS) → Ubud. Garuda publishes the Surabaya–Denpasar route, but this guide does not establish a suitable flight for your dates. [11] Check the flight before making the surrounding accommodation inflexible.

Build this day backwards from departure: airline check-in and bag-drop requirements, a separate road-delay allowance, then the driver’s hotel-to-airport estimate. Ask for a quote covering the exact Cemoro Lawang address and airport terminal. Choose a flight that leaves adequate margin after that calculation; a cheaper early departure may be the wrong purchase.

After landing, add baggage collection and the road transfer to Ubud. Bali is one hour ahead of Java: Java uses UTC+7 and Bali UTC+8. Read each ticket in its local time. [12] Keep dinner at the hotel or nearby and book no fixed evening activity.

If the available flights do not allow a sensible margin, change the plan: add a Surabaya transit night by taking a night from Bali, or extend the trip. Compressing day 7’s Bromo excursion and day 8’s airport journey into one dawn-to-night push defeats the purpose of the two-night mountain stay.

Fourteen-day itinerary grouped into arrival, eight days without changing base, four hotel-change days and departure. Day 8 is a full travel day; the Sanur move on day 11 takes part of a day.
Original planning model: eight days without a change of base, four hotel-change days and two arrival or departure days. Days 2–4 combine Yogyakarta city, Borobudur and Prambanan and can swap to suit opening days and ticket slots. Temple outings and Bromo still involve local travel; activities and permitted viewpoints depend on access and weather.

Days 9–14: Ubud first, then a Sanur finish

Days 9 and 10: two full days based in Ubud

Use day 9 for the palace and art-market area, with an evening performance if the current programme appeals. On day 10, choose a Campuhan Ridge walk in suitable weather or one outing beyond the centre, keeping the afternoon flexible. Indonesia’s tourism guide identifies these Ubud sights; your pace and combination are the editorial choices here. [13]

Choose your hotel around the evenings you want. A remote villa is a different proposition from a room close to restaurants, particularly after a long arrival day. Compare Ubud stays on Booking.com, checking the actual access, room steps and transport arrangements.

Day 11: move to Sanur without turning it into a tour

Allow a part-day hotel change: pack, check out, drive, check in and settle. A direct transfer leaves a more useful afternoon than a string of stops made with all your luggage. When you compare Sanur hotels, look for a comfortable route to the coast and meals, plus a pool if daily swimming matters.

Days 12 and 13: keep the coast in the plan

Sanur’s shore path, cafés and restaurants support a slower end to the holiday. [14] Walk early, take long lunches and leave room for doing little. Sea conditions and tides still determine whether swimming is appropriate; a coastal hotel does not guarantee suitable water every day.

Staying on mainland Bali also avoids adding an island-ferry connection immediately before your flight. If Nusa Penida or Lembongan is essential, redesign the Bali allocation around it and retain a mainland night before departure.

Day 14: depart from Denpasar

Arrange the airport transfer around your airline’s requirements and current road conditions. Check whether an after-midnight flight belongs to the calendar date you think it does; that detail can change the final hotel night you need.

An illustrative budget for two adults sharing

This is a transparent planning model, not a collection of live quotes. All sterling amounts below are chosen assumptions for two adults sharing one room, with paid transport, modest daily spending and a mix of simple and comfortable hotels. Replace them with actual offers for your dates.

Illustrative costs for the pair across 14 local days and 13 nights. International flights and statutory entry fees are separate.

SubtotalBefore contingency£2,139
Contingency15% of subtotal£320.85
Planning total£2,459.85, rounded£2,460

That is approximately £1,230 per person, plus international flights, visa and Bali levy, insurance, shopping and optional extras. It is not an all-in holiday price. The accommodation subtotal is £745; the daily spending envelope is £504. No exchange rate has been used to turn official rupiah charges into these assumptions.

Use final room totals including compulsory taxes, and compare breakfast and baggage terms. Check for double counting: a temple excursion including transport and admission replaces the relevant parts of both rows. A Bromo package including rooms or road transfers replaces those costs too. Every extra £10 per room-night adds £130 to the pair’s total; seasonal room rates and private-transfer quotes can therefore matter more than small daily savings.

Book the dependencies before filling the gaps

Start with the international flight pattern and the workable day-8 connection. Then coordinate your Bromo accommodation, road transfers and permitted excursion, followed by the dated Borobudur slot and train. Keep the rest flexible until those pieces fit.

Put the five bases, travel days and reservation details into the Trip Itinerary Planner. It helps organise your choices; transport operators and current opening information still determine whether the connections work.

Entry checks for British citizen tourists

As checked on 1 November 2026, FCDO says a British citizen passport needs at least six months’ validity from arrival and two blank pages. An eligible tourist visa on arrival allows 30 days and costs IDR500,000 per person; proof of onward or return travel is required. Complete the free All Indonesia arrival declaration within the 72 hours before arrival, and check current requirements before travel. [15]

The Bali tourist levy is separate: IDR150,000 per person, payable through the Bali government’s Love Bali service or on arrival. For two eligible, non-exempt adults, those visa and levy amounts total IDR1,300,000. Keep this beside the sterling model rather than treating it as included. [15]

Prepare for changing conditions

Check weather, local closures and volcano advice before the Java section. FCDO describes the rainy season as normally October–March, with regional variation; volcanic disruption can also affect flights. [10] The two-night Bromo stay creates rest time, not a guarantee of clear skies or access.

Download tickets and hotel pins for offline use. If mobile data will help with driver messages and changing plans, you can browse Airalo eSIM plans; select Indonesia and check your phone’s eSIM compatibility, unlocking and activation terms. Airalo has Indonesia plans, but no plan guarantees a signal everywhere on this route. [16]

Change the route when your priorities change

If your international ticket returns through Bali

Add the cost and time of positioning from Bali to Yogyakarta at the start, with an overnight buffer if needed. You can then follow the Java-first route and finish near your flight home. A return Denpasar fare may still win overall, but compare the extra flight, baggage, transfers and any additional hotel against the multi-city option.

If two weeks includes your UK flying days

Count the actual nights available first. To retain Java, reduce the Bali finish to one base and remove nights there. To prioritise a slower holiday, drop Bromo and rebuild a Yogyakarta-and-Bali route. Cutting a destination usually helps more than keeping every stop while removing the recovery time.

If Ijen is a must

Rebuild the East Java section around the additional journey and excursion, taking time from elsewhere or adding nights. It is not a spare morning near Bromo. The same discipline applies to waterfalls and island stays: identify what each addition replaces before booking it.

Questions before you book

Does this itinerary need 13 or 14 hotel nights?

It needs 13 nights when day 1 is arrival and day 14 is departure. A flight shortly after midnight, an additional positioning night or a later arrival can alter that. Build the hotel bookings from actual flight dates.

Can I do the route in reverse?

Yes, if the flights and train dates work, but it puts the demanding East Java section towards the end. Recheck every connection and leave a suitable final buffer before the international flight rather than reversing the day table mechanically.

Is Bromo suitable if I do not want to climb the crater?

This route is built around an allowed viewpoint outing, so crater access is not essential. The vehicle ride and final approach still need checking for your mobility and comfort; a jeep excursion is not automatically step-free.

Could I skip the Surabaya night?

A same-day train-and-road connection may be possible, but it changes the pacing. Check the exact train arrival and driver arrangement before considering it. The recommended overnight stop keeps the next mountain approach in daylight and avoids stacking two long legs.

Make the route your own

The strength of this two-week Indonesia route is its allocation of time: four nights for Yogyakarta, a deliberate pause before Bromo, two mountain nights and a Bali finish with room to slow down. Secure the difficult connections first, keep the night count honest and spend the remaining flexibility on the places that interest you most.
