Best Thailand Islands in December

Compare Andaman and eastern-island stays without mistaking the season for a weather guarantee.

First-time and slower staysFestive booking checksRegional route choices

The best Thailand islands in December depend on how much travelling you want to do between the airport and the beach. For most first visits, I would compare Phuket and Koh Lanta before adding a smaller island. Phi Phi suits travellers who want limestone scenery and a compact stay; Koh Lipe suits a longer beach escape when its more involved arrival is acceptable.

The eastern islands around Trat, including Koh Chang, Koh Mak and Koh Kood, deserve a separate comparison. Meanwhile, I would not automatically put Samui, Phangan and Tao at the top of a December swimming shortlist simply because they are popular during other parts of the year. The southern east coast can remain affected by late-year rainfall. [1]

This is an evergreen December planning guide, reviewed on 3 October 2026, not a long-range forecast for December 2026 or any later year. The recommendations combine seasonal context, transport practicality and different styles of stay. They are research-led judgements, not personal trip reports, a measured weather ranking or a promise that a particular beach will be suitable every day.

How I chose the best Thailand islands in December

Compare the whole holiday, not just the coast

My selection considers the usual seasonal setting, the range of accommodation, how easily you can reach a useful base, and whether the island adds something distinctive to your trip. Tourism Authority of Thailand material identifies both Andaman and eastern-Gulf destinations as December possibilities. I use that as context, then apply more specific questions about the traveller and the route. [2]

A family arriving after an overnight flight may value an uncomplicated first evening above a remote beach. A couple with a longer holiday may accept a slower arrival in exchange for a settled island stay. Someone who dislikes small boats may prefer a larger base with road-based outings. All three can make sensible December choices without sharing one universal winner.

Decide which compromise you prefer

Every attractive island involves a trade-off. More services can mean a busier setting; greater seclusion can mean a more expensive or less flexible transfer. A small room close to everything may suit one person better than a spacious hillside property. Decide what matters on an ordinary holiday day before comparing the most dramatic photographs.

December weather: the distinction that prevents a bad booking

The lower Gulf is not the same as the Andaman coast

The Thai Meteorological Department explains that the northeast monsoon can continue to bring rain to southern Thailand through December, particularly on the eastern side. Therefore, a broad claim that all Thai islands become uniformly dry as soon as December begins is not a sound basis for booking. Regional tendencies help narrow the search, but they do not remove daily uncertainty. [1]

For a beach-led December holiday, I would normally investigate Andaman choices first. That still leaves substantial variation between Phuket, Lanta, Phi Phi, Lipe and the smaller islands. Choose according to the journey, accommodation and activities you want, rather than treating a generally favourable coast as a reason to visit every stop along it.

Do not promise a late-December changeover

There is no dependable date on which the weather must switch to match a hotel booking. Avoid assuming the final week will always be better than the first, or that Christmas guarantees calm water. Check forecasts and marine advice close to travel, while choosing a holiday that remains enjoyable if some outdoor plans move. [4]

Likewise, a dry afternoon does not establish that a beach is suitable for swimming. Local flags, currents, sea conditions and operator advice take priority. The seasonal choice and the decision to enter the water are different decisions, made with different information at different times. [3]

Back to the guide

Phuket: the most useful starting point for many first visits

Why a larger island can be an advantage

Phuket supports a wide range of beach areas, accommodation and land-based activities. That variety is valuable when people in the group want different things or when you prefer not to make the entire holiday depend on boats. I would begin here for a first December trip that needs a straightforward arrival and several ways to spend an ordinary day. [5]

Do not choose 'Phuket' as though it were one resort. Compare an actual beach area, the room location and the distance to meals or activities. Kata, Karon, Kamala and other places can produce very different stays. A quiet room beside useful services may be a better match than a more impressive property that requires transport for every outing.

Choose a base, then choose two or three highlights

For a five- or six-night stay, I would select one main beach base and a small number of activities that genuinely appeal. Leave time for a cultural or food-focused outing and some unscheduled beach days. There is no need to fill the calendar with offshore trips simply because December is often associated with island excursions.

When comparing room offers, check whether the headline price includes the bed arrangement, breakfast and taxes shown later in the booking process. Also establish the airport transfer separately. A low nightly price can still be poor value when it places the whole group somewhere inconvenient or leaves important services outside the rate.

Back to the guide

Koh Lanta: my slower-stay choice

A good fit when you want to settle in

Koh Lanta offers a succession of beaches along its west coast, together with an old-town area, mangroves and other landscapes. The tourism authority presents it as a more relaxed island setting with accommodation spread between beach areas. I would investigate it for a December holiday built around a comfortable routine rather than a different excursion every morning. [6]

Choose the beach by how you plan to move. Staying close to meals and a suitable section of sand can reduce daily transport, while a more secluded property may suit travellers content to spend much of the day there. Neither arrangement is inherently better; the mistake is buying one while expecting the other.

Give the island enough time

I would usually allocate at least four nights, and often longer, when Lanta is the principal beach stay. This is a planning preference rather than an accommodation rule. It gives you several full days between arrival and departure and removes the pressure to book an offshore trip immediately after reaching the hotel.

Compare road-based transfers and seasonal boat options for the actual route you need. A shorter advertised sailing does not necessarily mean a shorter door-to-door journey, while a road transfer may involve its own ferry element. Read the product carefully and arrange the final hotel leg rather than assuming the driver or boat will leave you at the room. [7]

Back to the guide

Phi Phi: choose the setting and room carefully

Scenery is a strong reason, but not the only question

The Phi Phi islands are associated with limestone scenery, beaches and boat-based sightseeing. For a December itinerary, I would consider a short stay when those features are a central interest, not merely because the name appears on every generic island list. The compact visitor areas and different accommodation settings deserve a closer look before you book. [8]

Choose between the convenience of the main arrival area and a more removed beach property. A quieter resort can be appealing, but establish how you get there, what the boat transfer costs, and whether meals elsewhere are practical. A room that looks secluded on a map may create exactly the transport dependence you were hoping to avoid.

Two nights should contain one clear priority

With two nights, use arrival for settling in and the full day for the activity that brought you. Do not try to fit every viewpoint, beach and excursion into a stay whose first and last days also involve luggage and boats. If several activities matter, add a night or reduce the list rather than making the schedule brittle.

Maya Bay should be understood as a managed sightseeing visit, not a promise of a swimming stop. The operator guidance checked for this guide states that swimming there is prohibited. Check current park access and follow the instructions at each location rather than assuming every stop on one tour permits the same activities. [9]

Back to the guide

Koh Lipe: choose it for a proper stay, not a rushed detour

The appeal is strongest when you have time

Koh Lipe's beach areas include Pattaya, Sunrise and Sunset, with different accommodation and service settings. The tourism authority's description supports its place on a beach-focused shortlist. I would consider it when the group is willing to plan a more involved arrival and then stay long enough to make that effort worthwhile. [10]

For a short trip, compare the whole journey before falling in love with a room. The airport-to-pier road transfer, check-in, sea crossing and final accommodation arrival are separate pieces of the day unless a product explicitly combines them. An attractive island is not automatically an efficient addition to a route already focused farther north.

Make the beach choice specific

Ask about the shoreline outside the property, nearby boat activity and the recommended swimming area. Clear-looking water is not a substitute for separation from boat routes or local advice. Travellers who want to swim repeatedly may prefer a different room position from somebody whose priority is convenient excursion boarding.

For departure, I would favour a mainland or gateway buffer before an important flight. The extra night is a deliberate cost of a more remote island holiday, not wasted time. Compare the total itinerary with and without Lipe; retain it when the beach stay is the reason for the journey, rather than adding it as a final rushed achievement.

Back to the guide

Koh Kood: a quiet December alternative in the east

A different cluster with its own arrival logic

Koh Kood, also known as Ko Kut, belongs to the Trat island group. The tourism authority highlights beaches such as Bang Bao, Ao Taphao and Klong Chao, which make it worth investigating for a slower stay. It should be planned as part of an eastern route, not casually inserted between Andaman islands. [11]

Choose accommodation around the actual beach frontage and the way you intend to eat and move. Some travellers will enjoy staying close to one property's facilities; others will want more independence. Ask about nearby alternatives and transport before booking, especially when the room is attractive precisely because it looks removed from everything else.

Allow a generous arrival day

A Bangkok-to-island booking may combine a road journey with a ferry rather than provide a direct sea service from the city. Read the meeting point, mainland pier and final transfer details carefully. Boonsiri's timetable information distinguishes those combined journeys from the separate boat legs, and the distinction matters when estimating the whole day. [12]

I would give Kood at least four or five nights on a first visit when the aim is beach time and rest. A longer stay makes the transport effort easier to justify and gives you room to respond to conditions without rearranging the entire trip. For a shorter holiday, compare whether a closer base would deliver more usable days.

Back to the guide

Koh Chang and Koh Mak: two different eastern-island ideas

Choose Chang when you want more variety

Koh Chang combines beach areas with a larger island landscape and a range of visitor services. Its tourism-authority overview makes it a useful candidate for travellers who want an eastern-island stay with more than one way to spend a day. I would investigate a specific west-coast accommodation area rather than assume the whole island provides the same convenience. [13]

Map meals, the beach access and intended outings before deciding whether a hillside or more distant room is a bargain. Travellers who do not want to drive should establish how they will move between those points. An island holiday does not require hiring a scooter, but avoiding one works best when the accommodation location supports that decision.

Choose Mak for a deliberately smaller programme

Koh Mak appears among the eastern islands promoted by the tourism authority for December travel. I would investigate it when the attraction is a quieter, more contained stay rather than a packed programme of sightseeing. The important booking questions concern the property's frontage, local transport, meals and the current arrival connection. [2]

Avoid assuming that a smaller island is automatically easier for every traveller. Fewer transfers within the island may be helpful, while fewer service alternatives can make a cancelled activity or unsuitable beach more noticeable. Choose the setting because its ordinary day appeals to you, not solely because it sounds less developed than somewhere else.

Back to the guide

Koh Kradan and smaller Andaman stays

A beach retreat needs different planning

Koh Kradan is highlighted by the tourism authority for its beaches and reef setting, with access arranged by boat from the Trang coast. It deserves investigation when the intention is a settled beach retreat rather than an island with a large choice of independent restaurants and land-based activities. The accommodation and transfer become a larger part of the holiday. [14]

Ask what is included in the room arrangement: meals, drinking water, boat transfers and activity equipment should not be assumed. Also establish how the property handles an altered arrival or departure. A smaller-island stay can be rewarding, but it is less forgiving when essential details have been left as vague messages rather than confirmed arrangements.

Do not make every small island a separate hotel stop

You can appreciate a region without sleeping on every named island. A day excursion, where permitted and suitable, may provide enough variety while keeping the luggage in one place. Conversely, somebody who specifically wants quiet mornings and evenings may prefer a longer small-island stay over several day visits from a busy base.

For an unfamiliar boat-based property, mobility and boarding questions should come before payment. Describe what assistance is needed and ask about tides, steps, ladders and luggage handling. A promise that staff are helpful is welcome, but it is not a detailed account of whether the arrival arrangement meets your needs.

Back to the guide

What about Samui, Phangan and Tao in December?

They remain possible choices for specific reasons

There may be a good reason to choose the lower Gulf: a particular hotel, family visit, booked activity or a setting you already know and enjoy. The point of the seasonal comparison is not to declare these islands closed or unsuitable for everybody. It is to avoid selling them as interchangeable with Andaman options for a December swimming guarantee.

If you choose the lower Gulf, make the room and local area part of the holiday's appeal. A pool, nearby meals and activities that do not depend on a long crossing can help the stay remain enjoyable when outdoor plans change. Consider fewer island moves, particularly when the final departure is expensive or inflexible.

Do not rely on a calendar shortcut

A phrase such as 'after Christmas is always fine' is not a substitute for a forecast. The same applies to claims that every rainy day is brief or that the sea must settle as soon as the rain stops. Seasonal information is useful, but it should not be stretched into promises it cannot support. [1]

I would normally direct a first-time, beach-led December comparison towards Phuket, Lanta and selected eastern or southern alternatives first. A traveller with a clear reason to prefer Samui, Phangan or Tao can still make a different decision, provided the booking reflects the actual trade-off rather than an assumed weather certainty.

Christmas and New Year: check the rate's small print

A room price is only the beginning

For festive dates, examine the exact booking conditions rather than assuming a standard room rate tells the whole story. Check minimum stays, payment deadlines, cancellation terms and whether a meal or event charge appears later in the booking process. These are questions to ask about a particular offer, not a claim that every Thai hotel applies the same rules.

Families should also verify the age policy, bed configuration and occupancy limit. A room advertised for two adults may not accommodate children in the way you expect, while an extra bed may be available only in certain categories. Confirm the arrangement in writing before comparing the final total with a different property.

Book the essential links together

Once the main room is selected, check the transport that gets you there and back. A desirable festive booking becomes less useful when its arrival time is incompatible with the last practical boat or when the return connection creates an expensive risk. Accommodation and transport should be treated as one planning problem, even when purchased from different companies.

Leave discretionary activities more flexible where possible. The essential items are the room, arrival, departure and any experience that is genuinely the purpose of the trip. Everything else can be arranged around those foundations instead of forcing the whole holiday into a chain of non-refundable decisions.

Three December routes that keep the geography sensible

One week: choose a principal island

For seven days and six nights, I would normally stay on Phuket or Lanta rather than attempt a full Andaman circuit. Use arrival and departure days honestly, choose one or two meaningful excursions, and leave several ordinary days in the base you have paid to enjoy. A short holiday does not need another hotel every second night.

A six-night Koh Kood or Koh Lipe stay can also work when the arrival and exit are carefully arranged, but compare the whole travel time. The more complicated journey should buy something you particularly want, such as a longer settled beach routine, rather than simply a more remote destination name.

Two weeks: a slower Andaman route

A practical fourteen-day route is three nights on Phuket, seven on Lanta and three in the Krabi area before leaving on day fourteen. That totals thirteen nights. Krabi is a mainland finishing base, not an additional island, and its purpose is to provide variety and a more manageable final airport journey.

An eastern alternative could keep the holiday within the Trat group, with a principal stay on Chang or Kood and a carefully checked second-island connection. Do not combine the eastern and Andaman clusters merely because both appear in this article. The cross-country transfer can remove a full usable day without improving the holiday.

Three worked December choices

A family with six nights and little appetite for transfers

For this constructed example, the family wants a usable pool, nearby meals and the option of a beach visit, but nobody has a strong interest in a remote island. I would begin with a single Phuket base and compare rooms by bed layout and pedestrian access. A larger room close to ordinary services would take priority over a more secluded property requiring frequent rides.

The family would book the airport transfers and one suitable activity, leaving the other days adjustable. I would not add Phi Phi simply to create an island-hopping label. The additional boarding, luggage handling and checkout would need to provide something the family actually wants. This is a choice about their stated priorities, not a claim that families should never visit smaller islands.

A couple with twelve nights and a wish to slow down

Here the couple enjoys quiet evenings and is comfortable with a carefully organised boat transfer. One possible allocation is seven nights on Lanta, three on a suitable smaller island and two at the departure gateway. Before choosing the smaller island, they would verify the operating connection, room inclusions and return journey. The accommodation is the experience, not merely somewhere to sleep between tours.

I would compare that plan with twelve nights on Lanta and a few optional outings. The smaller-island addition is worthwhile only if its mornings, evenings and setting provide a contrast the couple values. A beautiful day-trip photograph is not, by itself, evidence that three hotel nights there improve the holiday. Both plans can be rewarding; the less complicated one should remain a serious option.

An independent traveller considering the eastern islands

Suppose the traveller wants a private room, local meals and some nature, but does not want to hire a scooter or arrange a different ride every evening. I would investigate a well-positioned Koh Chang base before automatically recommending the quietest possible Koh Kood property. The deciding factor would be the route between the room, meals and booked activities, not the island's popularity.

The traveller would also check the mainland arrival and final connection before adding Koh Mak or Kood as a second stay. Travelling alone can make a private transfer comparatively expensive, while a shared service may have a fixed collection area. Staying longer in one useful neighbourhood may therefore produce a more independent holiday than constantly relying on transport to reach the next supposedly secluded place.

These examples are intentionally different. Use them to identify the constraint that matters most in your own trip, then compare two realistic offers. Do not choose a destination first and spend the rest of the planning process trying to remove the very characteristics that define it.

Back to the guide

Ferry and speedboat choices in December

Compare the actual service

A route search can mix different boats, piers, collections and transfer arrangements. Read the specific product before comparing prices. Check the operator, luggage allowance, boarding requirements and whether the hotel pickup or drop-off is part of the ticket. Similar departure times do not mean the journeys are interchangeable. [15] [12]

For people who are uncomfortable on smaller boats, explain that before booking rather than choosing solely by journey duration. Ask about the vessel used and the boarding arrangement. An advertised travel time is not a description of comfort, accessibility or how much assistance is available with bags.

Keep the final connection conservative

Separate ferry and airline tickets should not be assumed to protect one another. Plan a gateway night when the consequences of a missed flight are significant, and understand the amendment conditions for both bookings. A buffer reduces pressure, but no reasonable itinerary can promise to absorb every possible weather disruption.

Carry the confirmation offline and save the actual operator's contact details. When a schedule changes, it helps to know who runs the service and where the new instruction applies. A booking website's broad route page is useful for comparison; the issued ticket and operator message should guide the journey on the day.

Back to the guide

Budgeting for December without inventing average prices

Separate room, travel and activity spending

Build the budget around the party you actually have. Room costs are normally compared per room-night, while transport and excursions often need a place for every traveller. Meals, local rides and optional activities deserve separate lines. A single 'daily budget' can hide too much when the itinerary includes both a simple beach stay and a remote boat-based resort.

Use the same inclusions when comparing offers. A hotel rate with breakfast and transfer may be better value than a lower room-only figure, or it may not suit the way you want to travel. The point is to calculate the total rather than assume the smallest first number is the cheapest complete holiday.

A worked allowance, not a quotation

For a two-adult example prepared on 3 October 2026, allocate THB 3,500 per room-night for thirteen nights, THB 1,200 per day for food across fourteen days, and THB 12,000 jointly for selected transfers and activities. The total is THB 74,300 before international flights, insurance and a disruption reserve. These are chosen planning inputs, not confirmed December hotel or tour prices.

Replace the allowances with live offers for your dates, especially over Christmas and New Year. If the total becomes uncomfortable, reduce hotel changes or choose a different room before removing the departure buffer. Saving money by making an important flight depend on an optimistic boat connection is a poor trade-off.

Matching the island to couples, families and independent travellers

Couples: decide whether seclusion is genuinely the aim

A secluded hotel can be wonderful when both people enjoy spending time there. It can be less successful when one person expects independent dining, frequent outings and easy evening walks. Compare the ordinary day before choosing a room mainly for its view, and agree how much transport you are prepared to arrange.

For a short romantic break, I would often prefer one well-positioned base over a complicated two-island combination. You gain slower mornings, fewer checkouts and more time to enjoy the accommodation. Add a second stay when it offers a clear contrast, not because a multi-stop itinerary sounds more impressive.

Families: prioritise the least convenient part of the day

Look at the arrival, beach access, mealtimes and bedtime routine. A large pool does not compensate for an unsuitable room layout or a difficult daily route. Ask about child supervision, pool depth and the actual bed arrangement; do not infer these from a family-oriented photograph or a hotel's broad marketing category.

Independent travellers may place more value on nearby food, approachable shared activities and a manageable arrival. They do not need to choose nightlife or a dormitory by default. A private room in a useful area can support a sociable holiday without making company compulsory every evening.

Back to the guide

Packing, connectivity and the final checks

Pack for the route, not just the beach

Choose luggage you can handle through the transfers you have booked. Keep documents, essential medication and a dry change accessible, and protect electronics from splashes during boat travel. If you are moving between several hotels, leave enough space to repack comfortably rather than filling every corner before departure.

Bring suitable sun protection and beach clothing, but avoid buying specialist equipment without knowing whether you will use it. An activity operator can explain what is provided and what is needed. The most valuable preparation is often a clear meeting point, suitable footwear and a booking that matches your ability.

Make communication less fragile

Save confirmations and accommodation addresses offline. When considering an eSIM, check handset compatibility, coverage information, activation terms and whether the plan is data-only. An internet connection can help with changes, but it should not be the only place where the itinerary exists or the only way companions know where to meet.

Before leaving an island, reconfirm the collection time and final destination with the operator. A similar hotel name or an assumed pier can create a much larger problem than a forgotten beach accessory. Keep the final day simple enough that you can respond to a change without reorganising several activities at once.

Pros and cons of a December island holiday

The advantages worth planning around

December opens up a strong comparison of Andaman and eastern-island stays, with several different styles of holiday to investigate. You can choose a larger base with plenty of services, a slower beach island or a more remote retreat. The useful opportunity is variety, not an obligation to cover the whole coastline. [2]

For travellers with limited time, an established base can keep the holiday straightforward. For those with longer, a carefully chosen second island can add a meaningful contrast. The route should grow from those preferences rather than from a list that treats every famous destination as equally necessary.

The compromises to accept

Popular festive dates can make a particular room or transfer less flexible, and the sea still requires daily judgement. Remote accommodation may involve a more demanding arrival, fewer meal alternatives or additional charges for transfers. None of these automatically makes the trip poor value, but they should be visible before payment.

A December holiday works best when the financial and logistical plan leaves some room for change. Choose a comfortable base, read the conditions and protect the final journey. That creates a more satisfying trip than trying to maximise the number of islands while leaving no spare time or money for an adjustment.

Advantages

  • Several distinct Andaman and eastern stays to compare
  • A larger base can simplify a first visit
  • A purposeful second island adds contrast

Trade-offs

  • Festive rate conditions need close reading
  • Remote stays require more transfer planning
  • December does not guarantee a calm sea

Common December mistakes

Assuming every coast follows the same calendar

The phrase 'Thailand in December' is too broad to settle a beach decision. Compare the regional seasonal setting and then the specific island. In particular, do not treat a recommendation for the Andaman coast as proof that the lower Gulf has identical conditions. The distinction matters most when swimming or several boat days are the main purpose. [1]

Another mistake is paying for a festive stay before reading the full rate conditions. Confirm the room occupants, bed arrangement, cancellation deadline and any compulsory charge attached to that exact offer. A booking is not fully compared until you know what the final amount buys and what happens if your plans change.

Adding one island too many

Long distances can disappear on a zoomed-out map. Combining Lipe, Phuket and the Trat islands in a short holiday may leave more memories of transfers than beaches. Pick one regional cluster and let the nights serve the purpose of the trip. A longer stay is often more enjoyable than another arrival photograph.

Finally, do not mistake a booked tour for guaranteed access to every advertised stop. National parks, local authorities and sea conditions can change what is possible. Understand the operator's substitution and refund terms, and keep an alternative day that you would genuinely enjoy rather than a schedule with no acceptable adjustment. [16]

Frequently asked questions

Which island would you choose for a first December holiday?

I would start by comparing Phuket and Koh Lanta. Phuket offers a broad range of settings and activities; Lanta suits a slower stay when the chosen beach and arrival arrangement work. The final decision should be based on the property, transport and daily routine, not a claim that one island is universally best.

Is Koh Samui a bad choice in December?

Not automatically. It may suit a particular hotel stay or personal reason for travelling. However, the southern east coast can remain rainy late in the year, so I would not market it as a guaranteed December swimming choice. Select accommodation and activities that remain appealing when sea plans change. [1]

Is December always dry on Phuket and Koh Lanta?

No. A generally favourable seasonal comparison does not guarantee every day's weather or sea conditions. Check local forecasts and beach warnings during the stay, and leave some flexibility around excursions. A pool or land activity should be an enjoyable alternative rather than an afterthought. [4] [3]

Is Koh Lipe worth the longer journey?

It can be when the island stay is a main purpose and you have enough nights to settle in. I would be less inclined to add it as a rushed final stop to a short northern-Andaman itinerary. Compare the complete arrival and departure, including a sensible buffer before an important flight.

Should I book Christmas accommodation early?

Secure the room and transport once the dates and requirements are clear, rather than relying on a particular property remaining available. Read the cancellation and payment conditions before committing. There is no universal booking deadline in this guide; availability and flexibility depend on the actual offer you are considering.

Can I combine Koh Kood with Phuket in two weeks?

It is possible to arrange cross-country travel, but I would usually choose one regional cluster for a beach-led two-week holiday. The transfer needs a clear purpose to justify the time and additional bookings. A longer stay within either the eastern islands or the Andaman region is often the more relaxed plan.

Are the Similan Islands a normal hotel base?

Do not treat them as interchangeable with a resort island such as Phuket or Lanta. Check the national park's current access and accommodation arrangements before planning any stay. For many visitors, the relevant comparison is a permitted excursion from a mainland or larger-island base, subject to seasonal opening and sea conditions. [16]

How many islands should I visit in fourteen days?

Two or three can be plenty, and one can be entirely right for a slow holiday. Count thirteen nights when the trip lasts fourteen calendar days, then deduct the time needed for arrival, departure and transfers. Add an island only when it offers something you genuinely want rather than another name on the route.

Back to the guide

My final December recommendation

Choose Phuket for a flexible first base, Lanta for a longer slower stay, Phi Phi for a purposeful scenery stop, and Lipe when you can give its arrival and departure the time they deserve. Consider the Trat islands as their own holiday rather than an appendix to an Andaman route. Smaller islands reward travellers who have checked the property and transfer carefully.

Above all, book a holiday rather than a weather promise. Select the coast sensibly, compare the exact room and transport, and leave enough space to enjoy the destination between travel days. December can support many excellent island plans, but the most convincing one is the plan whose ordinary days already sound like your kind of holiday.
