One Month in Indonesia: A Multi-Island Route Without Constant Moving
Four places to settle, three islands to experience and a month that leaves room for ordinary holiday days.
One month in Indonesia can become a long succession of two-night stays unless you decide what the extra time is for. This plan uses it for longer mornings, separate temple days, repeated beach visits and enough familiarity to stop planning every meal from scratch.
The route begins in Yogyakarta, continues to Ubud and southern Lombok, and finishes with nine nights in Sanur. It suits travellers who enjoy culture and coast but do not need a new island every few days. It deliberately leaves out East Java’s volcano circuit, Flores and the Gili islands so that “slow” describes the actual calendar.
Four stays, rather than adding a fresh base every few days.
Java’s heritage, inland Bali and southern Lombok’s coast.
Nine Sanur nights put the end of the holiday on Bali.
29 nights span 30 calendar days; check the allowed stay.
A month in Indonesia with four places to unpack
Count Day 1 from the local calendar date you first enter Indonesia, and leave on Day 30 from Bali only if your permission to stay covers those dates. This example assumes you reach Yogyakarta on that first day. Price an itinerary arriving at Yogyakarta International Airport, usually with a connection, and returning from Denpasar. If you enter through another Indonesian airport on an earlier date, deduct that extra day from this allocation even if the connection involves no hotel stay. Any overnight elsewhere must also replace a night below.
| Dates | Base | Nights | Reason to stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Days 1–6 | Yogyakarta, Java | 6 | Give the two major temple excursions separate days |
| Days 7–13 | Ubud, Bali | 7 | Culture, countryside and time between outings |
| Days 14–20 | Kuta, Lombok | 7 | A full week on the southern coast |
| Days 21–29 | Sanur, Bali | 9 | Settle by the coast and finish on the departure island |
| Day 30 | Depart from Denpasar (DPS) | 0 | Long-haul journey home |
This is three islands, not four: Ubud and Sanur are both on Bali. The three move days are 7, 14 and 21. If you conservatively protect each as a travel day, then remove arrival and departure, 25 of the 30 days have no base change. An eight-stay itinerary would need seven move days and leave 21 such days. The four-day difference is a planning comparison, not a claim that every transfer consumes exactly 24 hours.
Use the Trip Itinerary Planner to put the four stays on a calendar. Add the international journey separately so “a month away” does not accidentally become a month in Indonesia plus several uncounted travel days.

Days 1–6: Java with room for its major sights
Yogyakarta is the cultural start to the route. The Kraton, Malioboro and Kotagede give the city different points of interest, while Borobudur and Prambanan justify excursions beyond the centre. [1] Choose an address for the evenings you want: a walk to meals is more useful for six nights than saving a little on an isolated room.
Days 1–2: settle in and see the city
Keep arrival day modest. On Day 2, choose a Kraton-area visit and a local food or market walk, with a break in the heat. A guided introduction can help you decide which workshops or neighbourhoods deserve more time later. There is no need to combine all of the city’s sights before your first full night of sleep.
Day 3: make Borobudur the main event
Reserve the ticket type you actually want. Official ticket information distinguishes access around the monument from access to the temple structure; the upper-level package lists a guide and special sandals. Check the current product and your eligibility before buying, rather than assuming a transport tour includes the climb. [2]
Arrange a driver or a suitable small-group excursion, allow for the required reporting time and keep the return afternoon easy. If comparing Yogyakarta excursions on GetYourGuide, look specifically at monument access, ticket inclusions, pick-up area and the time spent travelling. A cheap transfer is not the same product as a guided temple visit.
Days 4–6: separate Prambanan, crafts and rest
Use Day 4 for a quiet city morning or a craft session. Visit Prambanan on Day 5, then leave Day 6 for a missed activity, food interests or laundry. The national tourism board describes Prambanan as a major temple destination associated with Yogyakarta; its scale deserves more than a rushed stop after another long excursion. [3]
Search Yogyakarta accommodation on Booking.com and Yogyakarta stays on Agoda for the full six-night total, then compare location and cancellation terms. If you have a very late arrival, confirm reception arrangements before paying.
Back to top ↑Days 7–13: a week in Ubud without a daily driver
Make Day 7 a flight and transfer day. AirAsia MOVE offers searches for Yogyakarta Kulon Progo (YIA) to Bali (DPS). Check your flight’s operating airline, airport codes, dates and baggage; the seller’s route page is not a reservation. [4] Continue to your Ubud accommodation and postpone ambitious sightseeing until the next morning.
Choose a stay that supports the week
For a seven-night stay, the approach road, steps, access to meals and somewhere comfortable to sit matter as much as the view. Ubud has both central accommodation and countryside settings, plus galleries and rice-field landscapes. [5] Choose the centre for independent evenings; choose a rural location when quiet surroundings are worth arranging transport.
Compare Bali accommodation on Agoda with Bali stays on Booking.com after narrowing the map to Ubud. Ask about construction nearby, the room category, breakfast and cancellation. A weekly discount does not compensate for an address that makes every meal a journey.
A loose pattern for the six settled days
On Day 8, explore locally and decide how much walking is comfortable. Give Day 9 to one countryside excursion with a driver. Keep Day 10 quiet. Use Day 11 for a cooking class or a craft activity, Day 12 for a gallery and a walk, and Day 13 for a favourite place or an outing that moved because of weather.
This rhythm is intentional: one substantial outing, then a gentler day. It is particularly useful if travelling in heat or if you want to do more than collect photographs. Avoid adding a distant coastal day trip merely because the car is already booked; there are sixteen coastal nights later in the route.
Back to top ↑Days 14–20: a settled week in southern Lombok
Fly from Bali to Lombok on Day 14 and transfer to Kuta Lombok. National tourism guidance lists Bali air access and the southern beaches around Kuta, Tanjung Aan and Selong Belanak. [6] Check flights before committing to rooms, and make sure the address is on Lombok rather than Bali’s better-known Kuta.
Choose the coast rather than trying to cover the island
Spend Day 15 getting to know Kuta and the immediate area. Use Day 16 for the Tanjung Aan side of the coast. Make Day 17 a rest day and Day 18 a separate outing towards Selong Belanak. Use Days 19–20 for the beach you preferred, an instructor-led lesson suited to your ability, or a local cultural visit arranged on appropriate terms.
This is a beach-and-local-outings week, not a Rinjani trekking itinerary. If mountains are the priority, replace the coastal week with a properly planned northern Lombok stay. Similarly, a desire to sleep on a Gili island calls for substituting a base, not repeatedly making long return trips from the south.
When using Lombok accommodation on Agoda, compare the Kuta area explicitly. For seven nights, look for practical meals nearby, a comfortable room for afternoons indoors and reliable arrangements for the driver days you actually want. A resort elsewhere on the island can be a good holiday choice while still being wrong for this plan.
If you prefer a ferry
Compare Bali–Lombok options on 12Go against the ferry operator’s own routing and total road transfers. Ekajaya’s published network includes Padang Bai–Senggigi and services to northern Lombok piers; those arrivals still require a land journey to the southern base. [7] Keep the entire move day free and do not assume the shortest advertised sea crossing is the shortest door-to-door journey.
Back to top ↑Days 21–30: let the final stay be a holiday
Return from Lombok to Bali on Day 21 and settle in Sanur. The long beachfront pedestrian path is useful for easy repeat outings, especially when the aim is to finish without another base change. [8] Choose the part of Sanur that matches your preferred walking distance to meals and the beach rather than relying only on a map pin for the resort.
Days 22–25: establish a comfortable routine
Use the first two mornings for short walks, breakfast and the beach or pool as conditions suit. Choose one modest inland or cultural outing for Day 24, then keep Day 25 free. There is no obligation to leave Sanur each morning; a long final stay works precisely because you have time to repeat something you enjoyed.
Days 26–29: choose a few experiences, then keep the finish clear
Add a class, a leisurely meal or another short excursion on Days 26–27. Keep Days 28–29 local, especially if they may absorb an earlier disruption. Book a late check-out or an extra room night only if it improves the actual flight day, and include the cost in your total.
A boat day trip is optional, not necessary to make nine nights worthwhile. Before adding one, compare time afloat, boarding conditions and the amount of time ashore. If you would be disappointed by a cancellation, do not place it on the final day available. FCDO notes that sea conditions change quickly and safety standards vary between boats. [9]
Day 30 is departure day. Being on Bali for more than a week before the long-haul flight removes the need for a same-day inter-island connection. It does not remove road traffic or airline disruption, so arrange the transfer against the airline’s check-in deadline.
Back to top ↑Three move days: what the route really requires
| Day | Move | Booking decision |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | Yogyakarta (YIA) → Denpasar (DPS) → Ubud | Confirm airport codes, baggage and the onward car journey |
| 14 | Ubud → Denpasar → Lombok (LOP) → Kuta | Choose a flight that leaves room for both road transfers |
| 21 | Kuta → Lombok airport → Denpasar → Sanur | Return to the international departure island well in advance |
Treat each move as the principal job of the day. A useful planning calculation is the hotel-to-airport journey, the airline’s check-in allowance, the flight, baggage collection and the next road transfer. Add them before judging whether a “short hop” still permits an afternoon activity. Long transfers, delays or a poorly timed flight can change the answer.
Book a suitable international itinerary first, then match the three domestic moves to it. A through-ticket and separate tickets have different consequences if a connection fails. If you arrive in Indonesia through Jakarta or another gateway before Yogyakarta, check the entire connection and any required overnight instead of treating the first city as irrelevant travel time.
This trip does not require driving a scooter. Use airport transfers and selectively booked drivers for days that need them. FCDO advises checking licences and insurance and highlights motorcycle accident risks; using a driver is a practical alternative. [9]

Changing the number of stops? Enter your own nights and door-to-door journey estimates in the Itinerary Pace Checker to spot tight combinations. Its assessment uses your inputs; confirm transport and opening arrangements separately.
When you search Yogyakarta (YIA) to Bali (DPS), check the actual operating airline shown at checkout. An AirAsia MOVE airport-pair search is a distribution/search page, not proof that AirAsia operates that flight or that a nonstop will run on your selected date. Confirm the airline, number of sectors, baggage conditions and arrival time before arranging the Ubud transfer. [4]
A month-long budget you can adjust
This is an original model for two adults sharing a room, in Indonesian rupiah per person. It assumes 29 nights, three domestic flight sectors and selected paid excursions, calculated on 2 November 2026. It is a planning scenario rather than a survey of live hotel or flight prices. International flights, insurance, shopping, alcohol, diving and any visa extension are outside the total.
| Item | Calculation or allowance | Per person |
|---|---|---|
| Shared accommodation | 29 × Rp800,000 per room ÷ 2 | Rp11,600,000 |
| Food and ordinary drinks | 30 × Rp250,000 | Rp7,500,000 |
| Domestic flights | 3 × Rp1,500,000 allowance | Rp4,500,000 |
| Local transfers and shared drivers | Whole-trip allowance | Rp2,500,000 |
| Tickets, classes and outings | Whole-trip allowance | Rp2,500,000 |
| Standard eligible VOA + Bali levy | Rp500,000 + Rp150,000 | Rp650,000 |
| Subtotal | Sum of the items | Rp29,250,000 |
| Contingency | 15% | Rp4,387,500 |
| Model total | Per person, two sharing | Rp33,637,500 |
For two people, the model totals Rp67,275,000 before the exclusions. The standard eligible visa-on-arrival and Bali levy figures come from official guidance; all other values are editorial spending inputs. [10] [11] A longer visa or extension changes both the fee line and the administration required.
An extra Rp200,000 per room per night adds Rp2,900,000 per person across 29 nights, or Rp3,335,000 including the same contingency. That makes the accommodation choice more consequential than a small saving on one transfer. Conversely, do not assume a monthly rate applies when the trip is divided among four properties.
A solo traveller cannot simply use half the couple total: the room and some car costs are shared in this model. Adjust those lines first, convert your figures into pounds using your bank or payment provider’s rate, then enter the sterling amounts in the Travel Budget Calculator. The calculator uses GBP and does not convert currencies.
Back to top ↑The month, the visa and the seasonal checks
The title describes a travel duration, not an immigration entitlement. For eligible British visitors, FCDO describes a 30-day visa on arrival, extendable once for a further 30 days. The free All Indonesia declaration is completed within 72 hours before arrival. Confirm the correct visa and the expiry date of your permission to stay. [10]
A 29-night trip spans 30 calendar dates, while 30 nights needs 31. Even the 29-night model gives no spare day if your permission is exactly 30 days. For a less pressured version, remove the final two Sanur nights and depart on Day 28: the trip then has 27 nights. If you want the full route plus disruption margin, arrange the appropriate longer stay or a properly completed extension; do not rely on sorting it out after the deadline.
Choose the month according to the experiences you care about and consult current regional forecasts. BMKG’s seasonal guidance divides the country into zones with differing onset dates, rather than one identical dry season everywhere. [12] For this itinerary, keeping the big outings flexible is more useful than assigning every day a non-refundable activity before you arrive.
For any Bali stay around Nyepi, check the actual holiday restrictions with the airline and accommodation before fixing a move day. For public holidays elsewhere, confirm attraction access and transport rather than assuming the usual pattern. The route is deliberately not tied to fixed weekdays, opening hours or a particular year’s holiday dates.
Store booking records and hotel addresses offline. Airalo’s eSIM store offers a way to compare Indonesia data if your phone supports eSIMs; check compatibility, package validity and coverage before buying. A month requires a different validity calculation from a one-week holiday.
Back to top ↑A 30-day tourist visa is not an entitlement to a 30-night stay. Match the entry and exit dates to your actual immigration permission, and leave room for disruption. British passport holders should also verify at least six months of passport validity from arrival and two blank pages, as specified in the current FCDO guidance. [10]
Swap one base instead of adding several
| Your priority | Change to consider | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| More heritage, less beach | Shift two Sanur nights to Yogyakarta | A shorter final coast stay; no extra base |
| More countryside | Shift two Sanur nights to Ubud | Less time at the coast, still four stays |
| Gili island atmosphere | Replace the Kuta Lombok week with one island base | Different sea transfers and weather exposure |
| Komodo is essential | Replace the Lombok week with western Flores | Different flight and park-booking plan; do not add it on top |
| Even fewer moves | Omit Lombok and divide that week between Bali bases | Two islands and fewer transfer commitments |
Do not book all 29 nights purely for a promotional discount before confirming the flights. On the other hand, travelling with no accommodation plan at all can undermine a comfortable long stay. A useful compromise is to lock in the core bases and important transport, choose suitable cancellation terms and leave ordinary daily activities flexible.
The main mistakes are using “one month” as shorthand for a visa allowance, comparing different airports under the same city name, choosing a remote property without counting daily transport and inserting a new overnight stop every time an attractive place appears. The route works when the four bases remain a deliberate constraint.
Back to top ↑Practical questions
Is a month enough for several Indonesian islands?
Yes. This plan covers Java, Bali and Lombok with three move days. Its purpose is to experience different settings while spending six to nine nights in each base, rather than attempting to sample every major region.
Why spend nine nights in Sanur?
The long final stay creates space for rest, a few chosen outings and an easy finish on Bali. If that balance does not suit you, move nights to another existing base. Adding more hotels changes the character of the trip.
Can I use a 30-day visa for a month?
Do not assume that a calendar month and 30 days are interchangeable. Use the actual permission-to-stay expiry date, include both arrival and departure in your planning calendar, and leave a practical margin. The shortened 28-day version is available if the full route is too close to your limit.
Can I begin and end in Bali?
Yes, but reaching Yogyakarta from Bali adds another domestic sector and may require an additional connection night. Rebuild the night count and transport budget rather than inserting the flight without accounting for it.
Does a slower itinerary mean doing less each day?
Sometimes, by choice. It also means placing major sights on separate days, returning to a neighbourhood you enjoyed and making fewer decisions about check-outs and luggage. You can be active without changing hotels frequently.
Back to top ↑Make this route your own
Use the month to settle into four places with different purposes: heritage in Yogyakarta, inland days around Ubud, southern Lombok’s beaches and a relaxed Sanur finish. Confirm the allowed stay, book the three move days, then keep enough of the calendar open to enjoy the time you have bought.
