Two Weeks in Malaysia and Thailand: Penang, Langkawi and Southern Thailand

Food in Penang, island time on Langkawi and Koh Lipe, then an unhurried Krabi finish.

14 days · 13 nightsMalaysia → ThailandSeasonal sea crossing

Two weeks in Malaysia and Thailand can feel coherent when the route follows one coast. Penang provides food and heritage, Langkawi adds space to unwind, Koh Lipe makes the sea crossing worthwhile, and Ao Nang gives you a practical mainland finish.

The choice that determines this itinerary is the ferry, not the hotel. Confirm its season first, then plan the nights around three substantial transfer days. The schedule below gives each stop a purpose and leaves room to enjoy it.

The night split

Penang 3 · Langkawi 3 · Koh Lipe 3 · Ao Nang 4.

Best planning window

November–April; confirm the exact international sailing before booking.

Count the travel

Three inter-base journeys, plus arrival and departure days.

Protect the flight home

Finish with four mainland nights after leaving Koh Lipe.

Two weeks, four bases and one international crossing

Use 14 calendar days and 13 nights: three nights in George Town, three on Langkawi, three on Koh Lipe and four in Ao Nang. The order moves north from Malaysia into southern Thailand and ends close to Krabi’s onward transport. Arrange arrival into Penang and departure from Krabi if the available flights and total fare work for you.

Original route allocation. Days one and fourteen are travel days; international flight nights are additional.
DaysBaseNightsMain purpose
1–3George Town, Penang3Heritage streets, food and recovery after arrival.
4–6Langkawi3A beach base and one nature outing.
7–9Koh Lipe3International sea crossing, then two island days.
10–13Ao Nang, Krabi4A mainland base with optional boat outings.
14Depart from Krabi0Airport transfer and onward journey.

There are nine days without a change of base between arrival and departure. The other five days contain arrival, departure or an inter-base journey. That is the main pacing test: adding Kuala Lumpur, Phuket or Koh Lanta would take time from those nine days, rather than create extra holiday time.

This route suits travellers who want city food followed by island and coastal time, and who can manage boat boarding with luggage. For a trip that needs step-free transfers or very predictable sea conditions, use the flying alternative below and leave Koh Lipe for another visit.

Put the stops and nights into the Trip Itinerary Planner, then use the Itinerary Pace Checker with your own door-to-door transfer estimates. These tools organise your choices; they do not check transport availability or entry rules.

Four bases over thirteen nights: George Town three, Langkawi three, Koh Lipe three and Ao Nang four.
Original route schematic, not to scale. The international sea crossing depends on the exact operating season and sailing; verify before booking.

Check the ferry season before committing to hotels

The international sea crossing is the route’s fixed dependency. Telaga Terminal currently advertises Langkawi–Koh Lipe services for 15 October 2026 to 31 May 2027, with reduced frequency at the edges of that period. It gives a crossing time of about 90 minutes and warns that departures depend on weather, sea and operating conditions. Those are operator details checked on 7 November 2026, not a guarantee for a future date. [1]

November to April is the practical planning window for the full route. The Andaman coast’s wetter southwest-monsoon period makes an extended island sequence less appealing at other times; seasonal averages cannot forecast the sea on your crossing day. [12] Check the sailing for your exact date before paying for the connected island stay.

The accommodation rule that protects the journey

Choose flexible bookings around the cross-border leg where the price difference is sensible. Ask what happens if the ferry is cancelled, whether a missed night can be moved and who arranges replacement travel. Do not assume a hotel and an independently bought boat ticket form one protected booking.

Ending with four nights on the mainland creates separation between the Koh Lipe departure and the international journey home. It cannot eliminate disruption, but it avoids making a sea crossing on the morning of a long-haul flight.

Fourteen days divided into arrival and departure, three inter-base journeys and nine days without changing base.
Original calendar-day analysis: two arrival/departure days + three moving days + nine days without changing base. Four nights in Ao Nang separate the final sea journey from departure.

Days 1–3: make Penang the food and heritage stop

Day 1: arrive in George Town

Check in, take a short orientation walk and eat near the hotel. A central George Town base keeps the next two days compact. This plan reserves the beach emphasis for Langkawi and Thailand, so a distant Penang beach resort would add transfers without solving the main purpose of this stop.

Day 2: heritage streets in a manageable loop

Choose a small section of the historic centre, with Armenian Street, a clan-house visit or the waterfront as possible anchors. Tourism Malaysia describes George Town’s heritage buildings and Clan Jetties as part of the city’s living cultural landscape. [13] Leave space between sights for a cafe, lunch and an indoor pause. Treat residential jetties as places where people live: keep voices down and respect private doorways.

Make food a reason to slow down. Choose a breakfast, a lunch and one evening eating area, then check current opening days when you select individual stalls. Several ambitious restaurant bookings can be less useful than two good meals with room to follow your appetite.

Day 3: one personal interest, then a quiet evening

Return to a neighbourhood you liked, choose one museum or arrange a guided food walk if you want help understanding dishes and ordering. Confirm dietary needs with the actual operator before buying. Keep the afternoon flexible rather than trying to turn this into a complete Penang sightseeing checklist.

When comparing accommodation, check where the room actually sits, whether it has a lift, and whether the advertised total includes required charges. A quiet room near your evening plans is often worth more than an impressive lobby.

Compare the George Town base

The Agoda search covers wider Penang; use the map to select George Town. Compare the same room occupancy and cancellation conditions across providers.

An optional guided food walk

A guided George Town food walk can replace part of day three’s independent food exploring. Check the walking requirements and dietary restrictions: this listing excludes halal and coeliac diets and severe allergies. [18]

Days 4–6: fly to Langkawi and give nature a full morning

Day 4: a short flight, a real transfer day

AirAsia’s current route page lists direct Penang–Langkawi flights. [3] Allow roughly four to five hours between hotels as an editorial planning range, including airport travel, check-in, the flight, baggage and the next transfer. Replace that range with the actual flight and hotel locations before booking.

Do not rely on an old direct Penang–Langkawi passenger-ferry timetable: the former operator says that service has ended and points travellers towards mainland alternatives. [4] A road-and-ferry alternative can work, but needs its own checked connections and a longer travel allowance.

Day 5: beach time with little administration

Choose Pantai Cenang or Pantai Tengah if having restaurants and services nearby matters; use a more secluded property only when you have included the extra transport and dining costs. Agoda’s Langkawi destination search separates these areas, making a map check useful before comparing room prices. [17] Keep this as a slow day after the move.

Day 6: choose a mangrove outing, then prepare for the border

Kilim Karst Geoforest Park combines limestone scenery, mangrove ecosystems and river channels, as described by Langkawi’s official destination organisation. [14] Choose a guided boat or kayak outing that fits your ability and ask explicitly for wildlife observation without feeding or handling. A pleasant nature experience should not depend on a close animal encounter.

Return with time to pack, confirm tomorrow’s departure terminal and check arrival documents. Telaga Terminal and Kuah Jetty are different places; Telaga’s service leaves from Telaga Harbour, not Kuah. [2] Save the ticket and a map of the departure point offline.

Find the Langkawi stay that fits

Check where the room sits in relation to restaurants, your chosen outing and the correct departure terminal.

Days 7–9: cross to Koh Lipe and let the island days breathe

Day 7: Malaysia out, Thailand in

For the Telaga service, clear Malaysian immigration before boarding. The operator identifies its Koh Lipe arrival point on Pattaya Beach and says the connecting longtail transfer is included. [2] Ask about the current boarding method if you have mobility limitations, very young children or heavy luggage. A short sea distance does not make every boarding arrangement easy.

Use the booking’s own reporting time; as a conservative personal allowance, plan to reach the terminal about 90 minutes before sailing unless the operator requires earlier. Allow roughly four to six hours from your Langkawi hotel to your Koh Lipe room, including both border processes. That is a planning buffer, not a published journey duration.

Thailand is one hour behind Malaysia. Read departure and arrival times in the local time of each port, rather than subtracting clock times to estimate the crossing. [1] Keep the rest of the day clear for check-in, a meal and settling in.

Carry Thai baht cash for the applicable Koh Lipe park fee and check the current amount before departure. Telaga says card payment is not accepted. [2]

Days 8–9: one active day and one uncommitted day

Use one day for a small-group snorkelling excursion if sea conditions, your swimming confidence and the operator’s practices suit you. Ask about life jackets, group size, meeting point, weather cancellations and any park charge before paying. Leave coral and marine life untouched, and choose operators that do not feed fish.

The second day can be a beach walk, reading, a longer lunch or another short outing. Avoid promising yourself calm water at a named beach every day: wind and conditions determine what is sensible. Follow local warnings and do not swim through boat channels.

Choose your accommodation for its real access and luggage arrangements as well as its view. Ask whether someone meets arriving guests, whether the approach involves steps or soft sand, and whether the room has the cooling and bathroom arrangements you need. Confirm the next transfer before your final evening on the island.

Check the island and crossing together

Verify the exact ferry terminal and sailing date before committing to your Koh Lipe room. The transport search may display different operators and departure points.

Days 10–14: finish in Ao Nang with room for the weather

Day 10: Koh Lipe to Ao Nang is a full travel day

One practical route combines the Koh Lipe–Pak Bara boat with onward road transport to Ao Nang. Bundhaya lists the boat leg, while 12Go offers route comparisons that include boat-and-van combinations. [5] [6] Check that the final drop-off is your Ao Nang hotel or a clearly identified meeting point; a ticket to Krabi town is a different endpoint.

Allow roughly seven to nine hours door to door as a conservative editorial range. The actual time depends on the boat, waiting at Pak Bara, vehicle stops and final drop-off. Ask who coordinates the connection and what happens after a late boat. Keep both lunch and the evening flexible; this is not a useful day for a prepaid sunset excursion.

Day 11: an easy mainland day

Walk locally, settle into the new base and decide which outing matters most. Ao Nang is a practical launching point for nearby islands and the beaches around Phra Nang Cape, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. [15] Staying here gives you a choice of excursions without changing hotels again.

Day 12: choose one boat outing

Choose Railay for a focused beach-and-scenery day, or an organised island trip if snorkelling and several stops are your priority. A current GetYourGuide four-island listing describes a longtail-boat trip. [16] Compare the actual vessel, transfer arrangements, national-park charges, cancellation terms and suitability for your group. An advertised list of stops is subject to conditions.

Day 13: keep the last full day available

This is the day to move yesterday’s outing to if conditions were poor, or simply enjoy the coast. Do not sell the buffer twice by pre-booking a second essential excursion. Pack and confirm the airport transfer before dinner.

Day 14: leave from Krabi

Use the airline’s reporting requirement and a checked transfer estimate from your hotel. If the long-haul ticket starts at a different airport and the connecting flight is separate, add a sensible overnight buffer or adjust the final nights. This plan does not assume any particular Krabi–UK flight is available.

Compare the final base and transfer

Confirm that the transport finishes in Ao Nang and that your selected hotel is in the area you want. Agoda’s Krabi search covers a wider region.

Optional island day from the mainland

Read the selected longtail tour’s current inclusions, park charges and cancellation terms. Confirm suitability for your group and the forecast before committing.

Prepare separately for Malaysia and Thailand

Entry rules depend on your passport and circumstances. For a full British citizen passport, the current FCDO Malaysia page requires at least six months’ passport validity on arrival and says tourist visits are normally granted up to 90 days without a visa. [7] Check the Malaysian Immigration Department’s official MDAC portal for the arrival-card requirements and exemptions that apply to you; keep confirmation accessible. [8]

For Thailand, the FCDO currently requires six months’ passport validity and a blank page. Its page says the tourism visa-exemption period changed to up to 30 days from 15 September 2026. Recheck the rule for your nationality and travel date, and carry onward-travel and accommodation information. [9] This seven-night Thailand stay does not remove the need to meet the entry conditions.

Thailand’s official digital arrival-card system covers arrivals by sea as well as by air and land. Complete the TDAC within three days before arrival, using the correct port and first Thai accommodation; the official service is free. [10] An arrival card is separate from a visa or permission to enter.

Check the FCDO regional-risk map before adding a land-border detour: restrictions apply to specified southern provinces and districts, and separate advice covers the Hat Yai–Padang Besar railway. [11] This itinerary uses the Langkawi–Koh Lipe sea crossing. Ask your insurer about your actual route, boating activities and any changes you intend to make.

For connectivity, compare Airalo’s regional and local eSIM options and check whether one plan covers both countries or separate local plans work out better. Check handset compatibility, activation timing and the included networks. Download tickets, maps and accommodation details before the crossing; a data plan is not a promise of signal at sea.

A worked budget for two adults, kept in two currencies

The following is an editable spending model, not a set of researched room or ticket quotes. It assumes two adults sharing one room, six Malaysian hotel nights and seven Thai hotel nights. Malaysia spending covers days one to six and Thailand spending days seven to fourteen. Figures were assembled on 7 November 2026; substitute your actual offers before deciding the trip is affordable.

Malaysia portion: illustrative allowances in Malaysian ringgit (MYR), for two adults together.

The ferry is counted once, in the Malaysia portion. Long-haul flights, travel insurance, passport or visa costs, shopping and exceptional disruption are excluded. The activity and local-travel pots must cover your selected outings, required entry charges and airport transfers; increase them if the real quotes exceed the allowances. Check accommodation totals for taxes, local charges and breakfast rather than assuming they are included.

Keep MYR and THB separate until you use a current exchange rate and your card or cash-conversion costs. Every extra MYR100 per Malaysian room-night adds MYR600; every extra THB500 per Thai room-night adds THB3,500. That makes accommodation the quickest place to test whether a more expensive room is worth its effect on the whole trip.

When you have actual quotes, convert them to GBP using your current payment rate before entering them in the Travel Budget Calculator. Its figures are editable and it does not convert currencies. Use the Hotel Comparison Calculator to include room extras and transfers in one currency.

Adapt the route without losing the holiday

If the international ferry is out of season

Keep Penang for three nights and Langkawi for three, then fly to Thailand on a verified itinerary and spend the remaining seven nights in a mainland coastal base such as Ao Nang. Look at connections through an appropriate hub; do not assume a direct Langkawi–Krabi flight exists. Reserve the full transition day and confirm any transit requirements.

This version removes Koh Lipe and its two sea-dependent travel days. It is a useful option when ferry timing, mobility or seasickness makes the island chain unsuitable. It still needs realistic airline connections and does not guarantee beach weather.

If you dislike long road transfers

Check a seasonal Koh Lipe–Koh Lanta service and a final mainland departure arrangement before changing Ao Nang to Koh Lanta. Do not treat an island-hopping sales page as proof that the exact date, vessel and connection are available. A different endpoint also changes the airport-transfer budget.

If you have fourteen nights rather than fourteen days

Add the extra night where it has a clear job: a second recovery night before an awkward flight connection, a longer island stay, or another mainland buffer. Recount the calendar from local arrival to local departure. Overnight flights may lengthen the time away from home beyond the advertised itinerary.

Booking order

  1. Check entry eligibility and the international ferry season.
  2. Compare the complete arrival-and-departure flight arrangement.
  3. Confirm Penang–Langkawi, the sea border and the Koh Lipe–Ao Nang transfer.
  4. Reserve accommodation around the confirmed transport, favouring flexibility where it matters.
  5. Choose a small number of optional activities and keep the final mainland day free.

The mistakes to avoid are using an obsolete Penang ferry schedule, confusing Kuah with Telaga Harbour, ignoring the one-hour time change, and booking a tightly connected flight after a sea journey. Each can turn a simple-looking map into an expensive day.

Questions before you book

Can I reverse the route?

Yes, if the exact return-direction flights and sailings fit. Reversing also means entering Malaysia from Thailand, so check Malaysian arrival requirements again. Rebuild the departure buffer at the end; do not simply read the same timetable backwards.

Is Koh Lipe essential?

No. It is the main reason for choosing this seasonal sea-border route, but flying between countries and staying longer in Ao Nang is a sensible alternative. Choose the boat route because you want Koh Lipe, rather than because a map makes it look effortless.

Should I book all boat excursions before leaving home?

Secure the transport that determines your overnight route once its operating dates are confirmed. Keep optional day trips flexible where possible, checking their cancellation terms and local conditions. A scheduled holiday does not require every day to be prepaid.

Choose the route that fits your trip

Choose this itinerary when the seasonal crossing is operating and you want an even balance of Penang’s city life and Andaman coast time. The useful discipline is to preserve the 3–3–3–4 night split and the final mainland buffer. If the boat connection is the wrong fit, change that part of the journey before paying for hotels around it.
