Johor Bahru to Singapore: Shuttle Train, Bus and Border Queues
The border crossing is short on the map. Booking rules, immigration and the journey beyond the checkpoint decide whether it works for your day.
- Two immigration checks
- Train ticket ≠ entry permission
- RTS opening still future

Choose Shuttle Tebrau when a booked departure fits your plans; choose a bus for greater flexibility or a more useful Singapore endpoint. In either case, include the journey to the border, both countries’ formalities and the final trip to your destination. A railway ticket settles the departure you have booked, not your eligibility to enter Singapore.
KTMB’s Shuttle Tebrau runs between JB Sentral and Woodlands Train Checkpoint. The scheduled rail hop is five minutes, but that is only the time on the train. [3] This guide was checked on 7 November 2026 and separates published rules from suggested buffers.
Which crossing fits your journey?
| Option | What it solves | What remains | Choose it when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shuttle Tebrau | A reserved rail departure from JB Sentral to Woodlands Train Checkpoint | Reporting, immigration and onward Singapore travel | A suitable ticket is available and the station journey works |
| Causeway bus via Woodlands | A crossing from central JB, with services towards different Singapore endpoints | Road and immigration queues, reboarding and any final connection | You value flexibility or the destination suits your plans |
| Bus via the Second Link and Tuas | An alternative chain serving western Johor and western Singapore | Getting to its boarding point and completing both checkpoints | The complete route matches your start and finish |
The rail route is published by KTMB; bus routes and endpoints are listed by Causeway Link and Singapore’s Land Transport Authority. The recommendations above are practical judgements, not claims that one crossing is always quicker. [3] [7] [8]
Get the place names right. JB Sentral is the railway station. Central JB’s road-border route uses the adjoining customs, immigration and quarantine complex, commonly called JB CIQ. Larkin Sentral is a separate coach terminal. On the Singapore side, Woodlands Train Checkpoint is at 11 Woodlands Crossing; it is not Woodlands MRT station. [5] [7] [8]
Save the exact station or bus boarding point, not just “Woodlands”. Then plan the onward local journey separately. A cross-border ticket is not necessarily a through ticket to your hotel, an MRT ride or an airport transfer.

Shuttle Tebrau: tickets, passports and deadlines
Start with KTMB’s official booking system. Search the correct direction and date, and enter the details from the passport you will carry. KTMB uses the original passport for Shuttle boarding. Check every digit before paying: the current passenger terms do not permit Shuttle name or passport-number corrections. [1] [4]
Book early once your plans are firm. Check the date range actually released in the booking calendar; if your date is absent, ask KTMB whether it is awaiting release or unavailable. Do not rely on a permanent advance-sale window copied from an older travel guide. This guide does not claim seats or a release time for a particular future date.
| Departure station | Gate opens before departure | Gate closes before departure |
|---|---|---|
| JB Sentral | 30 minutes | 10 minutes |
| Woodlands Train Checkpoint | 40 minutes | 20 minutes |
These are KTMB’s published gate windows. [1] For a first crossing, aim to reach the correct station about an hour before departure, earlier if your approach journey is uncertain. This is an editorial allowance for finding the boarding area and handling problems; it does not mean the gate opens an hour early.
Keep the direction and currency separate
One way from JB, KTMB lists RM5 for all nationalities. From Woodlands, it lists RM5 for Malaysians and SGD5 for non-Malaysians, converted into ringgit. Return-ticket pricing depends on the journey’s origin: check the complete price rather than doubling one fare. [1] Malaysians must complete KTMB’s MyKad verification for the citizen fare. [4]
Children under four travelling without a ticket must be registered at a JB Sentral or Woodlands ticket counter at least two hours before departure, subject to counter opening hours. That requirement overrides the general one-hour arrival allowance. Check the arrangement with KTMB before travelling. [4] Keep every traveller’s original passport accessible.
What the train journey involves
- Arrive at JB Sentral’s Shuttle boarding area. Follow the signs and staff directions for the cross-border train, with the booked passport ready.
- Complete Malaysia’s departure formalities before boarding. [17] Leave time to move through the process rather than treating the train departure as your station-arrival time.
- Take the Shuttle to Woodlands Train Checkpoint. Keep your luggage with you and follow instructions on arrival.
- Complete Singapore’s arrival clearance. ICA describes immigration clearance for arriving train passengers at Woodlands Train Checkpoint. A short rail ride does not remove this step. [6]
- Begin the local Singapore journey. Follow the current bus, MRT-connection or taxi route for your actual destination. Leave a separate allowance for this leg.
Keep travel documents in a small accessible bag rather than buried inside a suitcase. For a family, make sure each passport remains with the correct traveller during clearance. If using a mobility aid or needing assistance, ask KTMB about both stations and the train before booking; do not infer accessibility from a short crossing distance.
The return journey has different station arrangements and the earlier Woodlands gate deadline shown above. Plan it separately, including how you will reach the train checkpoint from your Singapore accommodation. Reaching the Woodlands neighbourhood is not the same as reaching the boarding gate.
Bus routes: choose Woodlands or Tuas deliberately
For a start in central Johor Bahru, the Causeway and Woodlands chain is usually the logical route to investigate first. A Tuas service can suit western Johor and western Singapore, but travelling across JB simply to use a different checkpoint can erase any hoped-for saving. Causeway Link’s guide distinguishes the First Link and Second Link procedures. [7]
| Service to investigate | Singapore endpoint | Route choice |
|---|---|---|
| Causeway Link CW1 | Kranji MRT | Causeway / Woodlands |
| Causeway Link CW2 | Queen Street | Causeway / Woodlands |
| Causeway Link CW5 | Newton hawker-centre car park | Causeway / Woodlands |
| Causeway Link CW3 | Jurong Town Hall Bus Interchange | Second Link / Tuas |
| Causeway Link CW7 | Tuas Link MRT | Second Link / Tuas |
| SBS Transit 170X | Kranji MRT | Causeway / Woodlands; separate operator rules |
| SMRT 950 | Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange | Causeway / Woodlands; separate operator rules |
Singapore endpoints follow LTA’s list updated 1 October 2026; check the operator for the boarding stop and current operation on your date. [8] A service number and endpoint are useful routing clues, not a promise of a specific departure time or a seat.
Compare the endpoint with the next part of your journey. Kranji can be useful for an onward rail connection; Queen Street or Newton may suit a different address. Tuas Link and Woodlands are not interchangeable arrival points just because both are in Singapore.
If a reserved coach better suits your luggage or pickup point, compare Johor Bahru–Singapore bus listings on 12Go. Read the named operator’s immigration and reboarding instructions, exact pickup and final stop before buying. Those listings are not the official Shuttle train calendar and do not replace commuter-bus ticket rules. [15]
How the bus crossing and reboarding work
For the central JB route, walk from JB Sentral towards the CIQ facilities and follow signs for Malaysia departure clearance. After clearance, find the correct bus bay, cross to Woodlands, then alight with all your belongings for Singapore immigration and customs. Afterwards, find the bus service permitted by your ticket for the onward leg. Causeway Link sets out this physical sequence in its border guide. [7]
The two clearance stages and the bus queue are distinct. Reaching the front of one does not establish how long the next will take. Keep the ticket reference and destination handy, and ask staff if the signed bay or service differs from your saved directions.
Causeway Link’s current single-journey rules
For Single Journey Tickets bought from 28 September 2026, Causeway Link’s published terms require LUGO-app redemption before boarding, including for printed tickets. Redemption starts a three-hour boarding/reboarding window. The ticket is for the specified Service and direction; buses do not wait at immigration, and reboarding is on the same Service within that window. The terms do not guarantee a seat or refund when immigration delay causes expiry. [9]
Cash for this product is accepted at ticket counters, not on board. ManjaLink cards, passes, express tickets and charters have separate conditions. Do not assume an older instruction to board “any Causeway Link bus” applies to your purchase. Check the ticket’s permitted connections with staff. [9]
Before buying, establish which product you are using and whether you can meet its app and payment requirements. Install and sign in while you have reliable connectivity; leave redemption until you are ready to travel within the stated window. If you do not have a suitable phone, ask the operator which alternative product or arrangement is available before joining the boarding queue.
Other operators have their own payment and transfer rules. A Causeway Link ticket is not permission to board an SBS Transit, SMRT or another company’s bus. For a booked coach, ask what happens if someone in your party takes longer at immigration; a reserved departure does not exempt anyone from the border process.
Singapore entry: check the traveller, not just the route
Use ICA’s entry-requirements checker for your passport, citizenship and residence status. Visa requirements are not the same for every nationality. Malaysia admission, a Malaysian visa or a bus ticket does not establish permission to enter Singapore. [10]
Foreign visitors should ensure their passport has at least six months’ remaining validity and carry the original document. ICA’s current land-checkpoint advisory repeats that passport reminder. [12] Do not substitute a transport company’s minimum passport-validity field for the destination country’s entry conditions.
Who needs the SG Arrival Card?
Travellers who are required to submit the SG Arrival Card with health declaration must do so within three days including the arrival day. For a Wednesday arrival, that means Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Submission through ICA’s official service or MyICA is free, and the card is not a visa. [11]
Singapore citizens, permanent residents and long-term pass holders travelling through Woodlands or Tuas land checkpoints are exempt. Ordinary foreign tourists do not receive that exemption merely because they are arriving from Malaysia. The transit exemption concerns people who do not clear immigration; it does not describe a bus or train visitor entering Singapore. [11]
Keep the submission acknowledgement and your accommodation details accessible. For a later return to Malaysia, check Malaysia’s then-current requirements for your nationality and status as a separate entry; a Singapore crossing does not create an automatic right to return.
Before packing, review ICA’s baggage-clearance guidance for prohibited, controlled and dutiable goods. Keep any required supporting documents accessible rather than discovering an issue at the checkpoint. [16]
Build a buffer with two queue scenarios
There is no honest universal “JB to Singapore takes X minutes” answer. ICA’s 1 November 2026 advisory warned of heavy traffic over the 6–9 November Deepavali weekend. It also reported that car travellers departing Singapore had faced waits of up to three hours during the September school holidays. That is evidence of disruption risk, not a forecast for your JB-to-Singapore bus or train. [12]
Use current official traffic information shortly before travelling, but remember that a road-camera view cannot tell you the complete immigration and reboarding time. A quiet bridge does not guarantee an empty passenger hall.
A worked bus-transfer stress test
Suppose you leave a JB hotel at 09:00. Choose 30 minutes for the local approach and 60 minutes for your onward Singapore journey. Then test two different allowances for the combined border process: road crossing, immigration on both sides, waiting and reboarding.
| Component | Shorter-delay scenario | Longer-delay scenario |
|---|---|---|
| Leave the hotel | 09:00 | 09:00 |
| Local approach | 30 minutes | 30 minutes |
| Combined border process | 60 minutes | 180 minutes |
| Singapore local journey | 60 minutes | 60 minutes |
| Illustrative arrival | 11:30 | 13:30 |
| Total elapsed | 2 hours 30 minutes | 4 hours 30 minutes |
Every duration in this model is a chosen input. Neither column is a prediction, a maximum wait or a statement about today’s queue. Replace both local legs with your own route. A longer delay remains possible, and a ticket’s validity window is a separate issue that must still be satisfied.
The useful question is what happens if the second scenario occurs. A flexible lunch can move. A fixed departure may be lost. If the consequence is expensive, move the crossing to the previous day instead of inventing a more optimistic queue estimate.
For an onward flight, compare Singapore accommodation on Agoda and Singapore hotels on Booking.com, then check the actual airport-transfer route and reception arrangements. These are citywide searches. Use the Hotel Comparison Calculator to compare actual room offers and transfer costs in one currency. Staying in JB still leaves the international border to cross on flight day.

Budget the complete crossing and prepare your phone
A very cheap border ticket can be only a small part of the day’s spending. As a worked example for two non-Malaysian adults travelling one way from JB, choose RM20 for a shared local ride, add two RM5 Shuttle tickets, and allow SGD4 per person for onward public transport in Singapore.
The total is RM30 plus SGD8: RM20 + RM10 in Malaysia, and SGD8 in Singapore. Only the RM5 Shuttle fare is a published ticket price; the local ride and Singapore transport figures are illustrative allowances, not quoted fares. [1] Keep the currencies separate until you choose an exchange rate. Taxis, different local routes, return tickets and additional fees change the total.
For a bus, replace the rail line with the final fare for your service, direction and ticket product. A headline crossing fare should not be treated as a full-day transport budget. Check what the fare includes beyond the checkpoint and how any onward MRT or bus trip will be paid.
Connectivity is part of the preparation
Have the operator app, confirmations, official entry submission and accommodation address ready before departure. Download offline directions as a fallback, keep the phone charged and do not leave your only record of an essential address inside an email you cannot open.
If your existing mobile plan does not suit both countries, compare an Airalo eSIM for the crossing. Airalo has country and regional products; inspect the chosen plan’s country list, data allowance, validity and activation instructions, and confirm device compatibility before paying. A plan chosen for Malaysia should not be assumed to cover Singapore. [14] The link opens the provider, so select the plan that explicitly fits your countries rather than assuming a two-country package has already been selected.
Frequently asked border questions
Can I turn up and buy the next Shuttle ticket?
Check availability in advance. A short journey does not mean there is a seat on the departure you need. If the available train is too late, compare a bus and accept its different queue and ticket conditions rather than relying on a walk-up seat.
Can the RTS Link replace Shuttle Tebrau now?
No, not on this guide’s 7 November 2026 check date. Its announced passenger-service target is February 2027 and remains conditional on approvals. Recheck the official project update for travel near that date. [2]
Does my bus wait while I clear immigration?
For the Causeway Link Single Journey Ticket described above, it does not. Follow its current same-Service reboarding rule and validity window. A different operator or reserved coach can have different arrangements, so read the actual ticket’s conditions. [9]
Can I use an immigration QR code instead of taking a passport?
Carry the original passport. ICA’s road-clearance QR arrangements have eligibility conditions; first-time foreign visitors, and those entering with a different passport from their previous trip, cannot assume they can use the QR option. KTMB also requires the booked passport for Shuttle boarding. [13] [1]
Is a day trip sensible with children or a mobility aid?
It can be, but assess the complete sequence of walking, queuing, baggage handling and vehicle changes. Ask the operator about assistance and accessibility at the actual boarding points. Keep the first Singapore activity flexible and avoid planning the return around the last possible departure.
Can I reach Changi directly from the border?
Plan the onward route explicitly. Woodlands Train Checkpoint is not an airport station, and a bus labelled “Singapore” may terminate elsewhere in the country. A suitable through coach may exist for your date, but its advertised arrival still depends on border clearance.
A simple plan for a first crossing
Book Shuttle Tebrau if its departure fits, carry the correct passport and arrive with time to spare. If taking a bus, choose the crossing and Singapore endpoint first, then read the rules for that exact ticket product. Complete the entry preparation before reaching the queue.
Keep a flexible activity after a same-day crossing. Before an important flight or fixed commitment, cross the previous day and stay in Singapore. For a longer trip, return to the Malaysia transport hub. The Itinerary Pace Checker can test the transfer duration you enter, but cannot predict immigration queues.
