A little context before you go
Planning notes for this collection
Choosing the right area usually matters more than choosing the highest-rated hotel. Location affects airport transfers, daily transport, noise, beach access, restaurants and how much energy remains after a full day.
Compare the neighbourhood before comparing individual rooms.
Start with the map
Before opening a hotel list, mark:
- The airport, station or pier used on arrival.
- The main sights or activities.
- The transport line, beach or pickup area you will use.
- The evening area you want within walking distance.
- Any early departure point.
A cheaper hotel can become poor value when it creates repeated taxis or a difficult late-night return.
Bangkok
Bangkok has several useful centres rather than one perfect central district. Rail access, riverside location, nightlife and temple convenience create different trade-offs.
Use Best Areas to Stay in Bangkok before the Best Hotels in Bangkok for First-Time Visitors shortlist.
Phuket and Krabi
In southern destinations, the correct base depends on beach style, evening atmosphere, tour pickups and road time. Phuket’s size makes cross-island journeys meaningful. Krabi’s mainland, Railay and quieter beaches have different transfer requirements.
Use the latest destination-specific area guides below.
What to check in recent reviews
Look for repeated comments about:
- Noise and nearby construction.
- Access roads, hills or stairs.
- Room condition and maintenance.
- Wi-Fi and air conditioning.
- Breakfast timing for early tours.
- Beach or station walking route.
- Extra charges and deposits.
- Airport, pier or tour pickup reliability.
One unusual review may be an exception. A repeated recent pattern deserves attention.
Booking conditions
Compare the final price, taxes, cancellation deadline and payment schedule. A flexible booking can be more valuable than the lowest non-refundable rate when weather, ferries or domestic transport are involved.
