Penang to Langkawi: Flights and Rail-Ferry Alternatives Explained
The direct ferry is no longer running: here is how to choose a flight or build a workable mainland connection.

Penang to Langkawi looks like a simple island hop, but an old ferry timetable can send your planning in the wrong direction. As checked on 7 November 2026, the direct passenger ferry is not operating. Its former operator confirms the service ended and points travellers towards Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. [1]
For most visitors staying on Penang Island, a direct flight is the easiest starting point. Overland travel is still useful if you prefer not to fly, are already in Butterworth, or want to include a mainland stop. The key is to plan all the connections, including getting off Penang Island in the first place.

A direct flight avoids the mainland train-to-pier connection.
Rail becomes more attractive when you can start on the mainland.
The George Town–Butterworth crossing is separate from the Langkawi ferry.
Plan the ferry reporting time before choosing your train or coach.
Penang to Langkawi options at a glance
These are planning ranges from a George Town hotel to accommodation around Pantai Cenang, with ordinary transfers and useful waiting time. They are not operator journey promises; leaving from Batu Ferringhi, starting on the mainland or staying at a remote Langkawi resort changes the total.
| Route | Door-to-door allowance | What you pay for | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct PEN–LGK flight | About 4–5½ hours | Airport transfer, flight, required bags and island transfer | A short holiday or fewer changes |
| Butterworth → Alor Setar → Kuala Kedah ferry | About 6–8 hours | Access to Butterworth, train, pier transfer, ferry and hotel transfer | A good Kuala Kedah sailing or Alor Setar stop |
| Butterworth → Arau → Kuala Perlis ferry | About 6–8 hours | Access to Butterworth, train, pier transfer, ferry and hotel transfer | A shorter sea crossing and a suitable sailing |
| Coach or private car to a mainland jetty, then ferry | Often 6–9 hours; quote the actual route | Road leg, ferry and Langkawi transfer | A convenient coach or a group reducing luggage changes |
Do not count the short George Town–Butterworth ferry as a Langkawi service. Penang Port’s operating route connects Raja Tun Uda terminal in George Town with Sultan Abdul Halim terminal in Butterworth. The separate long-distance passenger ferries to Langkawi leave from Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. [3] [9]
When flying saves the most effort
The PEN–LGK air sector is short, but your airport journey and reporting time are much longer. AirAsia’s current domestic advice is to arrive at least two hours before departure; check the equivalent instruction for any other airline you select. [2] [11]
Flying is particularly compelling if you have only a few Langkawi nights, are travelling with several bags, or want to avoid a sea crossing. It is less decisive if you are already beside Butterworth station and would otherwise cross back to Penang Island solely to reach the airport.
Compare a genuinely direct journey
A flight-search page can display both direct and connecting options. Filter for a non-stop PEN–LGK flight and inspect the complete price with your baggage. A journey routed via Kuala Lumpur does not have the same time advantage as the short direct flight.
Check the airline directly, or compare Penang–Langkawi flights on 12Go. The comparison is for flights; a ferry symbol or an old route description elsewhere is not proof of an operating direct boat.
Arrange the onward hotel journey from Langkawi airport using the property’s exact location. Do not give a driver Kuah Jetty as the meeting point when you are landing at LGK.
Start the rail route at Butterworth, not George Town
From George Town, reach Raja Tun Uda terminal at Weld Quay, cross to Butterworth, then follow the connection through Penang Sentral towards KTM. Penang Sentral’s passenger guide places the ferry and railway linkways on Level 2. Allow time to walk with bags and locate the platform. [3] [4]
The current Penang Port service page lists an adult pedestrian fare of RM2 for the strait crossing. This is a small first-leg cost, not the fare to Langkawi. Check the current operating hours before using a very early train; alternatively, price a road transfer directly to Butterworth. [3]
Use the northern Komuter in the Padang Besar direction. KTMB identifies Butterworth–Padang Besar as a northern route, and its timetable index currently points to the version effective 24 July 2026. Alor Setar and Arau are stops along this corridor. [5] [6] [7]
- Choose Alor Setar when your onward ferry leaves Kuala Kedah.
- Choose Arau when it leaves Kuala Perlis.
- Do not stay on until Padang Besar just because that is the train’s destination.
- Plan how you will leave the chosen station before boarding the train.
The current independent timetable transcription gives roughly 1 hour 8 minutes from Butterworth to Alor Setar and 1 hour 32 minutes to Arau. Those are train legs only. Verify the actual departure with KTMB and leave separate time for the road connection to the jetty. [7]

Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis: choose the better connection
Kuala Kedah means leaving the train earlier at Alor Setar, followed by a longer sea leg. Kuala Perlis means travelling farther north to Arau, followed by a shorter sea leg. Naturally Langkawi gives approximate passenger-ferry crossings of 1 hour 45 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes respectively. Weather and the particular service can change those times. [8] [15]
The choice is therefore about the usable sailing, rather than a clear speed winner. A train that reaches Alor Setar earlier can still leave you waiting longer at Kuala Kedah. Compare the full chain from your starting point to your actual Langkawi hotel.
A connection test before you pay
Langkawi Ferry Line requires passengers inside the terminal at least 60 minutes before sailing. As a planning test, add 15 minutes to leave the station, 30 minutes for a confirmed road transfer and 30 minutes of spare time. That gives 2 hours 15 minutes between train arrival and ferry departure. Increase it for an uncertain pickup, busy roads or access assistance. [9]
This is a deliberately cautious calculation, not an official minimum connection. If the only remaining boat fails your test, choose an earlier train, an alternative confirmed route or a mainland night. Extra sailings depend on tides and operating conditions; they are not a reliable fallback. [10]
For Kuala Kedah, reconfirm the departure before setting out from Penang. Bernama reported on 2 November 2026 that silting in the ferry channel remained an operational constraint. A timetable copied from a previous date cannot settle whether the sailing you need will run. [16]
A realistic example of where the time goes
The comparison below assumes a George Town start and a Pantai Cenang finish. It rounds the Arau train leg to 90 minutes and adds practical access, waiting and transfer allowances. The two-hour airport allowance follows the AirAsia notice. No particular flight or sailing is being offered as available. [2] [7] [8] [11]
| Part of the day | Direct flight | Rail via Arau |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel to airport / Butterworth station | 60 | 75, including the strait crossing and walking |
| Airport reporting / station wait | 120 | 30 |
| Flight / train | 35 | 90 |
| Station exit and car to jetty | — | 45 |
| Ferry reporting and additional cushion | — | 90 |
| Kuala Perlis–Kuah ferry | — | 75 |
| Island arrival and hotel transfer | 60 | 45 |
| Total | 275 minutes / 4 hours 35 minutes | 450 minutes / 7 hours 30 minutes |

Flying saves 2 hours 55 minutes in this model, as well as several luggage handovers. Starting at Butterworth removes much of the rail route’s first 75-minute allowance, so the comparison becomes closer. A poor ferry connection can move it in the opposite direction.
Use your trip itinerary plan to reserve a transfer day and place the first fixed-time Langkawi activity on the following day. That is especially useful when the island stay is part of a longer mainland route.
When a coach or private car is worth comparing
A coach to Kuala Perlis can remove the train-to-pier taxi if its actual arrival terminal works for your ferry. A private car can reduce changes further by collecting you at your hotel and taking you to the correct mainland passenger terminal. Neither includes the island crossing unless the quotation explicitly says so.
You can compare available Penang–Kuala Perlis road options on 12Go. Read the offer’s exact pickup point: Penang Island, Sungai Nibong and Penang Sentral are not interchangeable starting locations. Select ground transport and check whether any walking or local transfer is needed at the far end. [14]
Make the party-size comparison properly
For a couple, the cheap-looking train can lose some of its advantage once a taxi is added at the station. For a family or group, a private vehicle quote may be competitive per person. Ask for the vehicle size, luggage capacity, tolls, waiting arrangements and required child seats, then compare the same journey endpoints.
- Flight total: all passenger fares, necessary baggage and both airport transfers.
- Rail total: access to Butterworth, all rail fares, station-to-pier vehicle, ferry tickets and Kuah-to-hotel vehicle.
- Road total: hotel or coach-terminal access, road fare, any pier connection, ferry tickets and island vehicle.
Keep the comparison in MYR and split shared vehicles by the number actually travelling. The prominent fares on Langkawi Ferry Line’s homepage are labelled for local passengers; select the correct passenger category before using a ferry quote in your total. Do not compare a foreign visitor’s flight with a resident-only boat price. [9]
Bags, access needs and the backup plan
If every extra change creates difficulty, give that weight in the decision. A direct flight with suitable assistance and booked transfers, or a car to the mainland pier, can be more manageable than combining a local ferry, train, taxi and long-distance ferry. Confirm access and boarding arrangements for the specific services; a station facility does not establish that the whole chain is step-free.
Keep your passport or other accepted identification, booking references and hotel address accessible. Save the tickets offline. Mobile data is useful for driver messages and disruption checks; if you need a separate plan, browse Airalo and choose Malaysia. Buy only after confirming an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone and suitable activation terms. [13]
If your overland route needs a night near Kuala Perlis, compare Kuala Perlis stays on Booking.com or Kangar-area accommodation on Agoda, including Kuala Perlis. Check the map carefully: a room in central Kangar is a different transfer proposition from one near the passenger jetty. These are area searches, not verified rooms for your date.
For a cancellation, start with the ferry operator or booking channel and tell your Langkawi accommodation. Do not pay for a hurried taxi to the other port until its sailing, space and reporting deadline are confirmed. If the sea service is not operating, keep the mainland plan flexible.
Questions before you commit to the route
Why do some pages still advertise a direct Penang ferry?
Old schedules remain online. The former operator’s current notice says its service ended; Cuti Cuti Langkawi also states that the direct Penang route is not operational. Recheck these sources if you are planning well ahead, but do not base a booking on a historical timetable. [1] [10]
Can I use Butterworth without crossing by ferry?
Yes. A road transfer from your hotel can take you to the mainland station. Compare that actual quote and driving allowance with the ferry-plus-walk option, especially for a very early train or bulky luggage.
Can I drive my hire car onto the passenger ferry?
No: arrange an appropriate vehicle RORO service instead. Langkawi RORO’s instructions require vehicle documents, authorisation where the driver is not the owner and arrival in the vehicle holding area two hours before departure. Confirm written permission and cover with the rental company before booking. [12]
Is Langkawi a sensible day trip from Penang?
For an ordinary sightseeing visit, the outward and return airport or mainland connections make an overnight island stay the more useful plan. A same-day flight visit is possible only when the actual outward and return schedule leaves enough time for your purpose; the rail-and-ferry route above is a poor fit for a relaxed day trip.
Choose based on where you start and how many changes you want
From George Town or another Penang Island base, start by comparing direct flights with the correct baggage and airport transfer. The short flight is most valuable when it removes a complicated string of changes from a limited holiday.
From Butterworth, or on a trip deliberately travelling overland, compare the Alor Setar–Kuala Kedah and Arau–Kuala Perlis chains against the actual sailings. Book a comfortable connection, keep the first island evening open, and treat the rail, road and sea legs as separate commitments.
