Best Travel Apps for Thailand
Choose a few tools that solve real travel problems, then prepare for the moments when the phone cannot help.
Original app-planning concept. Icons and screens are illustrative, not current interfaces, a tested ranking or a promise of feature availability.
The best travel apps for Thailand should remove friction from the journey, not fill the phone with accounts you never use. A saved address, a readable ticket and a familiar banking app can be more valuable than a long list of fashionable downloads. Start with the first arrival and the bookings already made.
This guide groups tools by the problems they solve: navigation, language, local rides, intercity transport, accommodation, official conditions and assistance. It distinguishes genuine apps from useful websites, and it explains the offline and payment limitations that can matter when a connection or battery fails.
Official developer, operator and agency information was reviewed on 5 October 2026. Recommendations are research-led rather than claims of hands-on testing of every platform. The shortlist is designed to be trimmed to your route; nobody needs every tool discussed here to have a well-prepared holiday.
First priority
A small familiar core
Prepare the tools needed for the first arrival.
Offline check
Test the exact feature
Downloaded does not mean fully functional.
Trust the source
Official developer links
Avoid lookalike payment and government apps.
Keep independence
A non-phone fallback
Save key details and a separate payment method.
Best travel apps for Thailand: begin with a small useful core
Choose by the job, not by the size of the app folder
The best travel apps for Thailand are the ones that help with your actual route: finding an address, understanding a message, arranging a suitable ride, managing a booking and accessing money. Installing twenty unfamiliar apps does not automatically make a trip easier. It can create extra accounts, notifications and payment methods to understand while tired.
My starting selection is a map app, a translation app, a locally relevant ride option, the banking app you already use and the app or offline documents for the accommodation you have booked. Add a specialist tool only when the itinerary gives it a clear job. A Bangkok bus tracker is more useful on a bus-heavy city stay than on an entirely prearranged resort holiday.
How this selection was made
The choices are organised by practical task, official documentation, usefulness to an independent visitor and the availability of a non-app fallback. They are not ranked by commission, download totals or invented test scores. This is a research-led selection checked on 5 October 2026, not a hands-on benchmark of every current iPhone and Android version.
Some useful services below are websites worth bookmarking rather than apps that need installing. That distinction is deliberate. A government arrival form or an occasional rail booking can be handled without adding another permanent app, while a frequently used map or ride service may justify installation.
The shortlist at a glance
Match the tool to a real need
Use the table as a starting screen, then read the relevant section before downloading. Features, local coverage, identity checks and payment options can differ by device, service and account. A listed feature is not a guarantee that it works everywhere or fully offline.
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways.
| Need | First tool to consider | Useful alternative or fallback | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maps and saved addresses | Google Maps | Offline address note and hotel contact | Downloaded maps do not provide every type of offline direction |
| Basic translation | Google Translate | Checked written phrase and human clarification | Machine translation can misunderstand context |
| Local ride booking | Grab where available | Official taxi or prearranged transport | Coverage, pickup points and payment charges vary |
| Bangkok bus information | ViaBus | Route information at the stop or from the operator | Not every vehicle is necessarily tracked |
| Intercity transport comparison | 12Go | Operator website; SRT D-Ticket for applicable trains | Marketplace listing is not every operator’s inventory |
| Existing hotel booking | Booking.com or Agoda, matching the reservation | Offline confirmation and property contact | A reservation is not always a completed payment |
| Weather and air quality | Thai Weather; Air4Thai when useful | Official agency websites | Read the location, timestamp and warning details |
| Assistance | Official Thailand Tourist Police app | Saved phone numbers and local help | An app is not a substitute for urgent contact |
Selection reviewed 5 October 2026; features and availability vary by device, account and route.
Install less, prepare more
The most valuable step is often not downloading another tool but making the existing ones work offline where possible. Save the first hotel’s exact address, keep the booking reference somewhere accessible and test account access before departure. Then identify which functions genuinely require internet, a phone number, a bank card or additional verification.
Google Maps: save the route and its limits
What the official offline feature covers
Google Maps can download selected areas, but offline use is not equivalent to the full connected service. Google’s help states that offline public-transport, walking and cycling directions are unavailable, and live traffic and alternative driving routes are not provided. A driving route must fit inside the downloaded area. [1]
For a Thailand trip, save the hotel, airport, relevant station or pier and a few nearby landmarks before travelling. Check that the pin is the correct branch or entrance rather than a similarly named property. A place name alone can be ambiguous, especially when a booking uses an English marketing name and local signs use another form.
A practical preparation routine
Download the area around each overnight base while on a reliable connection. Then switch the phone to aeroplane mode briefly and check what remains available. Keep a separate text note containing the address and hotel phone number, ideally including the property’s own Thai-language address where supplied.
Do not treat a suggested route as proof of a safe pavement, accessible crossing or valid building entrance. Read the surroundings and use appropriate local information. The map is a navigation aid; your judgement still matters when a route encounters traffic, stairs, flooding or a closed gate.
Google Translate: useful for clarification, not certainty
Download and test the language support you need
Google’s help describes downloading supported languages for offline use, with availability depending on the language and device. Check whether the required download is offered, obtain the relevant language files and test the specific function you intend to use. Do not assume every live voice or camera feature works identically without a connection. [2]
For everyday travel, short direct sentences work better than idioms, jokes or several requests joined together. Ask one question at a time and show the person the text. If the response is unclear, simplify the sentence rather than repeatedly trusting the same mistranslation.
Know when an app is not enough
Use particular care with allergies, medication, legal matters, safety instructions and financial agreements. A fluent-looking translation can still miss the important distinction. For consequential information, obtain a checked written explanation or appropriate human assistance rather than relying solely on an automatic translation.
You can prepare a few useful non-sensitive phrases in advance: the hotel’s address, a request to confirm the total price or a question about the correct pickup point. Keep private documents and account information out of casual translation photographs when they are not needed. Convenience should not lead to sharing more personal data than the conversation requires.
Grab: a practical ride tool with payment checks
Prepare the account before a difficult arrival
Grab can be useful where its relevant services operate, but coverage and available vehicle types should be checked for the actual place and time. Register and review the payment settings before relying on it after a late flight. A successful installation does not guarantee that the first payment or phone verification will be effortless abroad.
Grab Thailand’s payment help lists several methods, including foreign cards, with separate processing terms for certain foreign payment arrangements. Read the quote and receipt for the service you use; do not assume the app fare is the only possible charge or that every card has identical treatment. [3]
Check the pickup rather than chasing a moving pin
At airports, malls and large hotels, the pickup point may be a designated area rather than the nearest visible road. Follow the actual instructions, confirm the vehicle and driver details in the app, and avoid entering a different car because someone says the booking has changed.
Save the accommodation address separately so the journey does not depend on remembering an unfamiliar name. For a shared ride expense, agree the payment method with companions before confirming. If someone adds a cash tip, communicate that clearly so another person does not unknowingly add the same discretionary payment again in the app.

ViaBus: add it when buses are part of the plan
A specialist tool rather than a universal essential
ViaBus provides bus-route and vehicle-tracking information through its official service. It can be particularly useful when you intend to understand a local bus route rather than use private transport for every journey. However, the existence of live tracking does not establish that every vehicle or route is covered at every moment. [4]
Check the stop name, direction and route variant carefully. A bus number can be insufficient when services have different branches or when stops on opposite sides of the road serve opposite directions. The app should help you ask a better question, not encourage boarding without checking the destination.
Leave a margin around uncertain arrival estimates
A predicted arrival time is not a guarantee. If the journey connects to a fixed train, flight or excursion, allow enough margin or choose a more predictable arrangement. Do not make a tight connection depend on a single moving marker that might reflect incomplete or delayed tracking data.
Before a first bus journey, save the destination and a fallback route. Keep suitable payment available according to the operator’s current arrangements; do not assume a tracking app also sells the ticket. Information, navigation and payment are separate functions unless the particular service explicitly combines them.
12Go: useful for comparing the full transport leg
Compare the actual departure and arrival points
12Go brings different transport options into one booking search, which can help when trains, buses, vans and ferries compete for the same journey. Its presence does not mean every operator or departure is listed. Compare the operating company, starting point, luggage and ticket instructions with the direct alternative where available. [5]
For example, Bangkok-to-Chiang Mai options should be compared by the actual service and station, not simply the shortest displayed duration. A booking confirmation is not a reason to ignore instructions about collection, identification or reporting time.
Use the route detail to prevent missed connections
After booking, store the issued voucher offline and read the boarding instructions. A screenshot can be a useful backup, but do not assume it replaces a required original document, printed ticket or live barcode where the operator specifies otherwise. The relevant instructions are those for the service purchased, not a generic claim that all digital tickets work alike.
SRT D-Ticket: bookmark the official railway alternative
Direct rail booking has a clear role
The State Railway of Thailand’s D-Ticket website is the official alternative to a marketplace for services offered through that system. Its booking process includes passenger details and ticket instructions. Use the official address and check the train, date, station and passenger information carefully before paying. [6]
This guide includes D-Ticket as a useful website bookmark, not an instruction to install an unverified similarly named app. Reaching the service through the railway’s official domain is a better starting point than trusting whichever sponsored search result appears first.
Keep the ticket and the station decision together
Save the issued ticket in the form required by the railway and note the exact boarding station separately. Bangkok has more than one relevant rail station; an attractive station photograph or a familiar city label is not enough to identify where your train departs.
Likewise, read the rules for changes, refunds and passenger details before booking. A direct booking can remove an intermediary, but it does not remove the railway’s conditions. Keep the reference and official contact route accessible to the travelling party rather than only inside one person’s email account.
Airalo: connectivity is a tool, not the whole phone plan
Check the exact package before purchase
Airalo’s eSIM options are worth comparing when advance mobile data would help with arrival maps, messages or booking access. Confirm that the phone is compatible and unlocked, that the package covers the country and dates required, and that you understand its validity-start and installation instructions. [7]
Airalo’s help explains that many packages are data-only, while inclusions depend on the product. Therefore, do not assume the chosen eSIM supplies ordinary voice calls, a local number or receipt of bank verification SMS. Keep those needs separate from the amount of mobile data advertised. [8]
Prepare without accidentally changing the wrong setting
Read the provider’s instructions before installing or activating the plan. Identify the home line and travel line clearly, understand which supplies data, and check the home network’s roaming terms before leaving any chargeable service enabled. Do not rely on a generic screenshot for settings that can differ between phones.
Keep the provider’s support instructions available offline. If installation fails, avoid repeatedly deleting and reinstalling the eSIM without checking whether the plan permits that process. A local physical SIM or another appropriate connection can be a fallback, but it should be chosen deliberately rather than through a rushed airport sales pitch.
Booking.com: use the guest app for the booking you hold
Keep the property details together
Booking.com’s guest app can help manage reservations and property communication. It is different from Pulse, the app designed for accommodation partners. Use the official guest-app page or the link from your booking rather than installing an app simply because its name contains the brand. [9]
When comparing Bangkok stays on Booking.com, check the final price, payment schedule and cancellation terms. Then save the confirmed address, dates, room type and booking reference. An app makes those details easier to access but does not turn a reservation into proof that every charge has been paid.
Verify unexpected payment requests
Treat an unexpected request for a fresh payment or sensitive card information carefully, even when it appears to refer to a real reservation. Use a verified property contact or the platform’s official support route to clarify the request. Do not let a short deadline in a message replace checking who is asking and why.
Before travelling, keep a readable offline copy of the confirmation and the property’s own address. Give a companion access to the non-sensitive arrival details. If the account cannot be opened at reception, a clear reference and identification process are more useful than repeatedly refreshing an unavailable app.
Agoda: useful when it is where the reservation lives
Manage the booking rather than collecting duplicate apps
Agoda’s official product information describes trip-management tools in its app and website, with features that can differ by platform and booking type. It is useful when you actually book through Agoda, not a compulsory addition merely because Thailand has a large accommodation market. [10]
For Thailand accommodation on Agoda, compare the same room, occupancy, meals and cancellation conditions as any alternative. A cheaper search headline can refer to a different product. Read the currency and final payment amount before confirming rather than relying on the first number displayed.
Keep independent arrival information
Record the property name, address, check-in arrangements and any outstanding balance outside the app. If a booking change is important, confirm it through the appropriate channel rather than assuming a request has been accepted because it was sent.
There is little benefit in maintaining multiple accommodation apps during a trip when only one contains an active reservation. Use another service when it offers a meaningful comparison or a booking you need, then keep notifications focused on actual travel information. A quieter phone can make a genuine message about the next check-in easier to notice.
GetYourGuide and activity bookings: ticket access is only one part
Read the meeting instructions before the travel day
GetYourGuide’s app supports access to booked activities and tickets, including offline ticket access described on its official app page. Nevertheless, an activity’s own voucher conditions, meeting point and identification requirements still govern how you join it. A mobile screen is not automatically the final admission document for every attraction. [11]
For Bangkok activities, compare the actual operator, start point and inclusions. For Chiang Mai day trips, check the pickup zone and whether the property is covered. The app’s convenience is most valuable when the underlying details are already correct.
Compare like-for-like excursions
For a southern stage, Krabi tours on GetYourGuide can be cross-checked with Thailand activities on Viator. Compare boat type, group size, transfers, fees and cancellation terms rather than treating similar titles as identical trips. An extra marketplace is useful only when it clarifies a real difference.
Save the supplier’s contact details and reporting time separately. A ticket stored offline does not provide live notice of a changed departure, so check relevant messages when connected. Likewise, preserve the original instructions when taking a screenshot; cropping out the pickup details can remove the part you need most.
Thai Weather: use the official forecast and warning context
Check the location and issue time
The Thai Meteorological Department lists its official Thai Weather application and other services on its own applications page. Use those official links to identify the correct app, or bookmark the agency website when that is sufficient. Read the forecast or warning for the relevant province and date rather than relying only on a colourful daily icon. [12]
A national forecast and a local short-term observation answer different questions. A symbol showing rain somewhere during the day does not describe every hour of an excursion, while a bright icon should not override a specific warning. Pay attention to the wording and issue time before changing a plan.
Marine decisions need more than a phone symbol
For a boat journey, follow the operating company’s current instructions and the relevant official marine information. Do not use a general city forecast as proof that a crossing is safe. If a service is cancelled, the practical task is to arrange the next suitable option, not to argue that an app’s icon looked favourable.
Keep a flexible alternative for an outdoor day and know the booking’s change policy. Weather tools are most useful when they support a plan with room to adapt, rather than a schedule that requires the forecast to be perfectly accurate.
Air4Thai: add it when air quality affects the itinerary
Use official monitoring information appropriately
Air4Thai is the Pollution Control Department’s official air-quality service. It can help travellers consult monitoring information rather than rely only on a photograph of the sky or an unlabelled social-media screenshot. Check the station, pollutant, measurement period and update time when interpreting a reading. [13]
The nearest station does not measure your exact personal exposure in every street, hotel room or vehicle. Similarly, a forecast is not the same thing as an observation. Use the data as context and follow appropriate official advice rather than treating one app number as a complete assessment of individual health risk.
Plan an alternative rather than obsessively refreshing
A traveller concerned about outdoor conditions can identify indoor alternatives, flexible travel dates or another destination stage in advance. That planning is more useful than repeatedly checking the same reading without deciding what would change the itinerary.
People with relevant medical concerns should seek advice appropriate to their circumstances before travel. This app recommendation is about access to official environmental information, not a personalised medical threshold or a promise that any particular activity is safe. Keep the distinction clear when sharing a screenshot with companions.

Thailand Tourist Police: official assistance information
Install through the official source
The Thailand Tourist Police website links its official assistance application and publishes contact information. Use that route to identify the genuine service rather than downloading a lookalike based solely on a name or icon. Review the app’s functions and permissions before relying on it during a problem. [14]
Save the essential numbers separately
The official Tourist Police site lists 1155 for tourist police, 191 for police emergencies and 1669 for medical emergencies. Keep these numbers in a readable offline note along with your accommodation address. A data-only eSIM does not guarantee ordinary voice calling, so know how you would make a call or ask someone locally to assist. [14]
When seeking help, a precise location and a clear description are more useful than a long narrative without an address. Share sensitive personal information only through an appropriate official process. Do not assume an online message has been seen immediately or that every channel offers the same response time.
Your banking app: the most useful one may already be installed
Prepare the existing account rather than opening one impulsively
Check that the app opens, authentication works and the official support route is accessible before travelling. Know how to review transactions and use the available card controls. A familiar account with understood terms can be more practical than a newly downloaded financial product chosen from a travel list.
Keep card-spending terms, cash-withdrawal limits and foreign-exchange charges separate in your notes. A smooth app interface does not make every transaction inexpensive. For example, a provider’s ATM allowance can be exhausted even while ordinary card purchases continue to work normally.
A QR symbol does not mean every app can pay it
Do not assume your overseas bank app can scan every Thai merchant QR code. KASIKORNBANK’s TAGTHAi EASY PAY information describes a specific tourist-payment arrangement with its own setup. That is different from universal compatibility between foreign accounts and local QR payments. [15]
Before adopting a wallet, check funding, identity requirements, fees, limits, refund treatment and what happens to unused money. Maintain usable cash and another payment method while learning the product. A newly created account should prove itself useful before it becomes the only way to pay for the day.
SuperrichTH and currency tools: a quote is not a booking
Use the provider’s own information
Superrich Thailand lists its SuperrichTH app alongside website rate information. It can be useful when that provider is part of your exchange plan. However, a reference rate or displayed branch rate still needs to be matched to the actual currency, denomination and transaction direction. [16] [17]
Do not confuse this business with the separate SuperRich Currency Exchange (1965). Check the official company and branch details rather than selecting an app by a familiar colour. A rate from one company does not describe a transaction at another similarly named counter.
Keep the task proportionate
For a single modest exchange, the official website and a phone calculator may be enough. There is no need to install a specialist app solely to watch small movements that will barely affect the amount being exchanged. Compare the net baht and any additional journey cost, then make the decision.
Likewise, a general currency converter may display an indicative or cached rate rather than a cash offer. Check its timestamp before using it to estimate a purchase. Precision on screen should not be mistaken for a guarantee about the amount that a bank, card or exchange desk will provide.
TDAC: bookmark the official free arrival-card website
It is a government form, not a travel-app purchase
The official Thailand Digital Arrival Card website is operated through the Immigration domain and identifies the service as having no fee. Use the official site and follow its current submission instructions. This review checked the no-fee statement on 5 October 2026. The arrival card is not itself a visa. [18]
Be wary of assuming that the first search advertisement or a paid app with an official-looking name is the government service. An intermediary may offer a separate service, but payment to it is not the same thing as a government charge for the official form.
Prepare the details before the submission window
Have passport information, travel details and the first accommodation address ready, then follow the current official timing. Save the confirmation in the form instructed and keep it accessible offline. Do not submit guessed travel information merely to complete a checklist early.
If a field or correction process is unclear, consult the official instructions rather than giving passport data to an unknown helper. The useful phone preparation here is a trusted bookmark and a readable saved confirmation, not another unnecessary application with broad access to personal information.
Three phone setups you can trim to the itinerary
A short Bangkok city stay
For a few days based in Bangkok, begin with the hotel confirmation, a map, translation and the ride option you expect to use. Add ViaBus only when local buses form a real part of the plan, rather than because it appears on a comprehensive travel list. Save the airport route and the correct hotel branch before arrival, including the property’s own address details.
An activity app becomes useful when it contains an actual booking with a meeting point or ticket you will need. Without a booking, the website may be enough for comparison. Keep the official Tourist Police contacts and the appropriate weather source accessible, but do not assume that every occasional reference needs a separate app notification throughout the stay.
A northern rail journey with changing bases
For a Bangkok-to-Chiang Mai route, give the issued train ticket and exact boarding station priority. The transport marketplace or direct railway site is useful before booking; afterwards, the ticket instructions and current operator messages matter more than browsing another search result. Save the next accommodation and a backup way to show its address without internet.
Maps for multiple bases need the relevant areas downloaded, not only the arrival city’s centre. A translation tool can help clarify pickup or accommodation messages, while official air-quality information may be relevant to outdoor plans. Trim anything that duplicates a job already performed adequately by another familiar tool, and review saved addresses whenever the itinerary changes.
An island-heavy holiday
For an island route, keep each ferry or combined-transfer voucher with its actual departure point, reporting time and included land connection. A ticket labelled with an island name may begin at a mainland airport, town office or pier; the phone folder should make that distinction obvious. Store the onward accommodation address in the same stage of the itinerary so a connection does not end at an unexplained destination label.
Give power, splash protection and offline records practical attention. Weather information should include relevant official warnings and the operator’s current service instructions, not just a beach icon. A data plan may help with updates, but do not make a sea crossing or remote pickup depend on uninterrupted reception. A readable saved document and a clear meeting arrangement remain useful when the signal does not.
A mixed group needs a shared minimum
When travelling with children, older relatives or friends who do not use the same apps, prepare a small shared information set: accommodation, next departure, meeting point and contact numbers. The organiser can hold the detailed booking while others still know where they are going. Avoid requiring every group member to create accounts merely to understand the day’s plan.
If one person is responsible for bookings and another for payments, make that division explicit. Share the practical reference rather than sensitive credentials. A group can be well prepared with different phones and different confidence levels, provided the essential information is understandable and not locked inside a single person’s preferred app.
The pre-departure phone check
Test the functions you will actually need
Open the map, translation, ride, bank and active booking tools before departure. Confirm the accounts and passwords, download relevant offline material and check that the first hotel’s address is readable without internet. Then review which notifications are essential for the trip and silence the promotional ones that would obscure them.
Make sure the phone has enough free storage for offline maps, documents and photographs. An app that installed months ago may need an update or renewed login when opened again. Complete that work on a reliable connection, not while trying to locate the airport pickup area.
Power and cables should match the device
A portable power bank can be useful for long transfer days, provided it suits the phone and current transport rules. Compare capacity, weight, outputs and the manufacturer’s instructions rather than buying the largest unit by default. Check the airline’s current battery policy before flying; this guide does not set a universal allowance.
A spare charging cable is worthwhile when losing the only cable would disable every app-based plan. Choose the correct connectors and a reputable product suited to the required charging arrangement. Existing compatible equipment is preferable to buying duplicates that add weight without improving resilience.
An offline test for the first arrival
Walk through the journey with the connection disabled
Keep copies in a place you can find quickly. A confirmation buried among hundreds of screenshots is technically stored but practically difficult to use. A clearly named trip folder or offline note can hold the hotel, transport, emergency contacts and a short list of essential addresses without creating another account.
Share the useful details with a companion
The other traveller should know the accommodation and the next departure even when the main organiser’s phone is unavailable. Share references and contact information as appropriate, but do not circulate banking passwords, security codes or unnecessary passport images. Independence should not come at the cost of exposing sensitive data.
Consider one minimal paper backup for the first-night address and important contact numbers. Paper will not update itself, but it does not run out of battery. The best app setup includes a way to complete the immediate journey when the app cannot be opened.
Boat days, rain and a lost-phone plan
Keep the phone usable without depending on accessories
For a wet itinerary, compare water-resistant phone pouches against the actual device size and closure instructions. Test an empty pouch first and do not assume a product described as waterproof protects indefinitely in every condition. Keep the phone secure rather than leaving it unattended because it is inside a protective case.
A phone lanyard or tether may help with accidental drops when it is compatible with the case and used appropriately. It is not a theft guarantee, and it should not encourage using the phone where that creates a safety problem. Sometimes putting it away is the better protection.
Know what happens if the phone disappears
Before travelling, understand the device’s official lost-phone tools and how to reach your bank without that device. Keep a separate payment card and enough essential contact information to get help. Avoid making every account-recovery method depend on the same missing phone.
During an actual loss, use official bank and device-support routes and act according to the circumstances. A hotel or trusted companion may help you reach those channels, but should not need your passwords or full card-security details. Restoring money access, protecting accounts and continuing the journey are separate tasks that can be handled in a sensible order.
Pros and cons of an app-led trip
The objective is not to make the whole holiday phone-dependent. It is to use a few tools for the tasks they handle well and preserve ordinary alternatives for everything else. That approach is more useful than treating a long list of downloads as evidence that the trip is fully prepared.
Common travel-app mistakes
Believing offline means fully functional
Downloaded maps, saved tickets and cached account screens do different things. Test the precise feature you need instead of assuming the whole service works without a connection. A saved ticket may be readable while a change notification or live barcode still requires the operator’s specified process.
Trusting the icon more than the developer
Use official websites to reach genuine app-store listings and review the developer identity. A familiar name or colour does not establish that an app belongs to a government agency, bank or transport operator. Avoid sideloading a payment or travel-document app from an unverified message.
Booking the wrong place through a convenient interface
Check airport codes, station names, piers, pickup zones and dates before payment. An attractive interface can make a wrong selection easier to confirm quickly. The transaction is only useful when it is for the route, property and service you actually need.
Saving everything on one inaccessible phone
A backup that is inside the same locked or missing device is not independent. Keep the first-night address, essential contacts and another payment method accessible through a separate sensible route. Share the practical itinerary without sharing the credentials that protect the accounts.
Frequently asked questions
Which five apps should I prepare first?
Start with maps, translation, a suitable local ride option, your existing banking app and the app containing your active accommodation booking. Google Maps, Google Translate and Grab are useful candidates for the first three jobs, subject to the route and coverage. Add specialist tools after identifying a specific need rather than installing everything in the table.
Does Google Maps work offline in Thailand?
Downloaded areas can be useful, but Google’s documented offline limitations still apply. Public-transport, walking and cycling directions are not available offline, and live traffic is absent. Download the relevant areas, test the function you need and keep the address separately rather than assuming every connected feature survives without data.
Do I need both Booking.com and Agoda?
Not necessarily. Use the app where the actual reservation is held, and use another service only for a meaningful comparison or another booking. Whichever you choose, keep the property address, reference, payment conditions and arrival instructions accessible outside the app too.
Will a data eSIM receive my bank’s SMS codes?
Do not assume so. Many travel eSIM products provide data without ordinary voice or SMS service. Check the exact package and your home bank’s verification arrangement before departure. Mobile internet and access to a particular phone number are different requirements, even when both are used by the same banking app.
Can I pay every Thai QR code with my UK banking app?
No universal compatibility should be assumed. Some specific tourist-payment products exist, but they have their own setup, funding and refund rules. Check the actual service rather than treating a QR symbol as proof that any overseas app or card can pay it. Keep cash and an independent card available while testing a new method.
Is the Thailand Digital Arrival Card a paid app?
The official TDAC website states that the government service has no fee; that statement was checked on 5 October 2026. Use the official Immigration website and current instructions. A paid intermediary or lookalike download is not the same thing as the official arrival-card service, and the form is not itself a visa.
Which app should I use for an emergency?
Prepare the official Tourist Police information, but do not delay urgent help to troubleshoot an app. The official site lists 1155 for tourist police, 191 for police emergencies and 1669 for medical emergencies. Keep the numbers and your location details available offline, and know how to make a voice call or ask locally for assistance.
What is the most useful preparation step?
Test the first arrival with the phone temporarily offline. Make sure the hotel address, transport instructions and relevant booking details remain readable. Then check power, account access and an independent payment backup. That exercise reveals practical gaps more reliably than adding another app to an already crowded folder.
The phone setup I would take
I would organise a small core around the first arrival, existing bookings and the actual transport plan. Maps and translation would be prepared offline where supported, the relevant ride and bank accounts would be checked, and the first hotel’s address would exist outside a single app. Optional tools would earn their place by solving a real problem on the route.
For weather, air quality and assistance, I would use official sources and pay attention to timestamps and limitations. With tickets and accommodation, I would follow the issued instructions rather than assume a generic screenshot always suffices. Meanwhile, for payments, I would keep cash and another card available instead of trusting one phone to handle everything.
The best travel apps for Thailand should make the trip easier to navigate, not more fragile. A few useful tools, clear offline records and an independent fallback are a stronger preparation than a long download list that has never been opened or tested before departure.
