7 Days in Northern Vietnam: Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay
A six-night route with time in Hanoi, two countryside nights and a cruise connection that works on paper before you book.

Seven days in Northern Vietnam can hold Hanoi, Ninh Binh and an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise, provided the week is planned around nights and connections. The decisive booking is the early journey from your Ninh Binh accommodation to the cruise’s actual port. Get that wrong and an apparently tidy route stops working.
This research-led itinerary uses two Hanoi nights, two Ninh Binh nights, one cruise night and a final Hanoi night before departure. Its sightseeing blocks, transfer margin and budget model are editorial planning choices. Published times and fees are identified separately, with current sources checked on 23 October 2026.

Count six nights
Two Hanoi, two countryside, one cruise and one final Hanoi stay.
Protect the port arrival
Work backwards from the named cruise’s check-in deadline.
Choose one boat trip inland
Give Trang An a morning instead of trying to complete every Ninh Binh sight.
Keep the last night on land
Return to Hanoi on Day 6 before the Day 7 flight.
The route for 7 days in Northern Vietnam
This plan counts Day 1 as the day you arrive in Hanoi and Day 7 as the day you leave. It therefore contains six overnight stays. An overnight flight from the UK before Day 1, and any journey home after Day 7, sit outside that local itinerary. Check the actual calendar dates before booking annual leave.

| Day | Main plan | Sleep here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Hanoi; an optional short lake walk | Hanoi — night 1 |
| 2 | Hanoi heritage sights and the Old Quarter | Hanoi — night 2 |
| 3 | Morning transfer to Ninh Binh; one gentle afternoon outing | Tam Coc or Trang An area — night 3 |
| 4 | Trang An boat trip and Hoa Lu, with time between stops | Same Ninh Binh base — night 4 |
| 5 | Early direct transfer to the confirmed cruise port; embark | Ha Long Bay cruise — night 5 |
| 6 | Disembark and return to Hanoi; keep the afternoon flexible | Hanoi — night 6 |
| 7 | Airport transfer and departure; sightseeing only if time allows | No night included |
The route suits a first visit focused on city life, limestone countryside and one night on the water. It asks you to change accommodation three times, including the cruise, so it is a fairly active week. It does not leave room for Sapa, Ha Giang or an additional Cat Ba stay without removing one of the three named destinations.
A late Day 1 arrival still works: keep the sightseeing on Day 2. A very early Day 7 flight also works if the final Hanoi night is retained and the airport transfer is arranged. The harder constraint is Day 5, when the road journey must meet a fixed cruise departure.

Days 1–2: give Hanoi one proper sightseeing day
Day 1: arrive without a fixed attraction booking
Go to your Hanoi hotel, eat and recover from the journey. If there is daylight and energy left, make a short walk around Hoan Kiem Lake and the southern edge of the Old Quarter. These central sights sit naturally together; a long cross-city excursion adds little to an arrival day.[14]
Choose an Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem-area hotel with a practical vehicle meeting point. Ask where your next transfer can actually collect you, rather than assuming a minibus can stop outside every lane. For an early arrival, a room ready before the normal check-in time needs separate confirmation.
Day 2: two visits, lunch and unhurried streets
Start at the Temple of Literature, using roughly 90 minutes as a planning allowance. Its official site currently lists daily daytime opening of 08:00–17:00 and standard adult admission of VND 70,000.[2]
Leave space for lunch, then allow another 60–90 minutes for Hoa Lo Prison. The site lists daily opening of 08:00–17:00 and a standard daytime ticket of VND 50,000, checked 23 October 2026. Its entrance is at 1 Hoa Lo Street.[3]
This is a deliberately limited pair: education and architecture in the morning, a more demanding historical visit afterwards. If prison history does not appeal, replace Hoa Lo with an art or museum visit rather than treating it as compulsory. Use the late afternoon for the lake and Old Quarter, with a café stop and dinner. The visit lengths and order are editorial pacing choices, not timed tours.
Do not make the morning depend on entering the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. If that is a personal priority, check its current operating notice and visiting session before swapping it into this day. Adding it on top of both visits would turn a manageable plan into a checklist.
Compare Hanoi stays on Agoda or search Hanoi accommodation on Booking.com. Both links open city searches. Check the map, room type, noise comments, breakfast and cancellation terms for the same dates; no specific property or rate is assumed here.
For a different mix of city sights or a longer stay, use the Hanoi travel guide to adjust the city days before adding more stops.
Days 3–4: stay in the countryside and choose one boat trip
Day 3: move south, then keep the afternoon simple
Vietnam Tourism describes Hanoi–Ninh Binh as about two hours by road or train.[1]
Allow three to four hours door to door in this itinerary, including collection, station or bus stops and the final ride to your accommodation. That is an editorial allowance, not a published timetable. Leave Hanoi after breakfast and avoid a prepaid activity immediately after arrival.
Tam Coc is the practical default if you want an identifiable village base and meals within reach; a Trang An-area stay makes sense when a quieter property setting matters more. Compare the actual pin and eating options. “Ninh Binh” in a booking search can cover the city and surrounding countryside, so the destination name alone does not locate your room.
After lunch, choose a short local walk or, if the weather and your energy suit it, Hang Mua. The viewpoint involves around 500 steep steps, according to Vietnam Tourism.[1] Allow around 90 minutes to two hours for a measured visit, and skip the climb when conditions make footing uncertain. Do not leave the descent until darkness.
Compare Hanoi–Ninh Binh transport on 12Go if you want to compare road and rail options. The route page covers several transport types; examine the actual departure and arrival points, luggage allowance and any change of vehicle, not just the headline journey time.[10]
Day 4: Trang An first, Hoa Lu afterwards
Reserve the morning for Trang An’s boat journey, including travel to the landing, ticketing and possible waiting. Use a half-day block rather than assuming the advertised boat duration covers the whole outing. Check the operating route and expected time at the official ticket desk. Wear the provided lifejacket and follow the boat operator’s instructions.
After lunch, visit Hoa Lu Ancient Capital for historical context. Its temples occupy a former capital site within the same broader limestone region.[1] Allow about an hour to 90 minutes, plus road time. Return to your accommodation early enough to arrange breakfast and pack for the cruise transfer.
Pick Trang An or Tam Coc for the main rowing-boat experience; this schedule uses Trang An. Doing both uses time that could otherwise go to a walk, a slower lunch or rest. Do not add Cuc Phuong National Park to the same day.

| Visit | Reference price | What this means for the plan |
|---|---|---|
| Trang An | VND 300,000 per person over 1.3 m | Sightseeing and boat admission; check the available route on arrival. |
| Hoa Lu Ancient Capital | VND 20,000 per adult | A separate visit after the boat trip. |
| Hang Mua | VND 150,000 per person over 1 m | Optional on Day 3; skip the climb if it does not suit you. |
The provincial tourism centre publishes these figures. Use the dated official table when checking the cost of your chosen visits.[4]
Compare Ninh Binh-area stays on Agoda and view Ninh Binh accommodation on Booking.com. These are broad destination searches, including countryside properties. Confirm early pickup access and breakfast arrangements before choosing a secluded address.
Day 5: make the Ninh Binh-to-cruise connection work
Travel directly from Ninh Binh to the bay instead of returning to Hanoi first. Bhaya’s published route guidance estimates approximately three to three-and-a-half hours by direct road transfer, compared with five to six hours via Hanoi. These are operator estimates under normal conditions, not a guarantee for your hotel, vehicle or pier.[5]
Ask the cruise company to arrange the transfer or explicitly approve the proposed collection time and drop-off point. A privately arranged car provides control over departure time; a shared service can work when its actual stops and arrival deadline are confirmed. A bus labelled “Ha Long” may leave you somewhere other than your cruise lounge.
Work backwards from check-in, not the city name
As a published example, Bhaya Classic’s two-day Ha Long itinerary departs at 12:00 from its Tuan Chau base. Its listed excursions include the Trinh Nu area and, the following morning, Sung Sot Cave or Titov Island.[6]
If your written confirmation requires check-in by 11:30, using a 3½-hour road estimate plus a one-hour contingency gives a latest planned departure of 07:00: 11:30 minus 3½ hours minus one hour. The 11:30 deadline and one-hour margin are assumptions for this worked example; replace them with your operator’s actual instructions.
An 08:30 departure with the same 3½-hour journey reaches the port at noon before any delay, leaving no time for an 11:30 check-in. This is why a leisurely breakfast can be the most expensive mistake in an otherwise sensible itinerary. An earlier start may be necessary from a remote property or on a busy travel date.
- Confirm the vessel name, port, lounge or lot number and map pin.
- Get the exact pickup place, time and driver or dispatcher contact.
- Check whether the transfer price includes luggage, tolls and the final pier approach.
- Ask what happens if a shared transfer is delayed and who coordinates with the boat.
- Send passenger details through the operator’s requested secure process and carry the required identification.
Compare Ninh Binh–Ha Long road services on 12Go as a starting point. This is a destination-wide transport search, not a confirmed connection to Bhaya or any other ship; obtain written pier and check-in confirmation before buying a separate fare.[11]

Days 5–6: one night on the bay, then back to Hanoi
Once aboard, follow the actual ship’s programme rather than adding independent stops. A one-night cruise gives you an afternoon, evening and morning on the water. It is not two full sightseeing days, and it is sensible to choose a route for its specific activities rather than the number of attractions in the headline.
Bhaya Classic’s published example disembarks at 10:00 on the second day and gives a Hanoi return estimate of 13:30–14:30 when its return transfer is arranged. Its page also warns that weather, tides and operating conditions can change the programme.[6]
Keep the rest of Day 6 free until you are back in Hanoi. A late lunch, a short stroll or a final dinner is enough. A museum can be added only if the actual return time and opening hours allow it. Book the final hotel night even if the advertised return looks early: that night separates the sea-dependent part of the trip from the airport departure.
Compare the whole cruise booking
Check cabin occupancy and bed arrangement, included meals, drinking water, paid drinks, activities, entrance fees, taxes and the exact road transfers. A package including a return Hanoi shuttle does not automatically include pickup in Ninh Binh. Ask for the price of the route you need: Ninh Binh → cruise port → Hanoi.
Also confirm whether the boat actually cruises in Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay. Marketing can use “Ha Long” broadly; the named itinerary and port are what matter. Do not assume that a transfer booked for Tuan Chau serves Ha Long International Cruise Port.
Check the Ninh Binh-departure overnight Ha Long cruise listing on GetYourGuide. This alternative listing describes Starlight Cruise and Ha Long International Cruise Port, which differs from the Tuan Chau example above. Confirm the named vessel, pickup time and whether the return to your Hanoi hotel is included in your selected option; its detailed itinerary ends at the wharf.[9]
This is a comparison option, not a personal cruise review. Date-specific cabin availability, boat substitution and the final cancellation conditions need checking before payment.
Protect Day 7 and have a plan if the cruise changes
Day 7 belongs to the flight. Arrange the hotel-to-airport transfer using your airline’s required airport arrival time and a local estimate for the actual departure hour. A final breakfast or lake walk is optional; a cross-city attraction booking creates an unnecessary deadline. Keep your passport, essential medication and flight details with you throughout the route.
If the cruise is cancelled
Bhaya explains that authorities can suspend or shorten departures when conditions require it. The operator cannot promise that a boat will sail simply because your booking is confirmed.[7]
If you receive notice while still in Ninh Binh, ask whether to stay there or return to Hanoi; do not start a long transfer solely to wait at a closed port. If you are already at the bay, get written instructions about onward transport and accommodation. Confirm separately which unused cruise, transfer and hotel services are refundable under your actual booking.
In this six-night plan, the practical fallback is an extra land-based night and a Hanoi day. Moving the cruise to Days 6–7 would use the flight buffer and is unsuitable when it puts disembarkation on departure day. One spare night reduces some connection pressure; it cannot guarantee protection from a prolonged disruption.
Choose dates for the whole route
Vietnam Tourism identifies April–June and September–November as broadly favourable for Ha Long, while Hanoi is hot and rainy in summer and can be cold and misty in winter. These climate patterns are not forecasts for a sailing date.[8]
For a first trip, consider April or October–November if your calendar permits, while keeping the cruise terms and current forecast central to the decision. In hot weather, shorten the exposed climbing and walking; in cool weather, pack layers for the deck. The itinerary should still be worthwhile if swimming is unavailable.
A worked budget for two adults sharing
The following is a replaceable planning model prepared on 23 October 2026, not a live price survey or a quoted holiday. It assumes two adults share one room for five land nights and one cabin for the cruise. Most amounts are chosen spending allowances; the admission subtotal uses the official standard adult references already cited.
Swipe or scroll to see all columns.
| Item | Assumption | Total for two |
|---|---|---|
| Land accommodation | 5 nights × VND 1,000,000 per room | 5,000,000 |
| One-night cruise | 2 adults × VND 4,000,000; check the actual meals and inclusions | 8,000,000 |
| Airport and intercity transport | A combined allowance for both airport rides and all three intercity legs | 4,000,000 |
| Local sightseeing transport | Chosen shared allowance | 900,000 |
| Meals outside cruise inclusions | Chosen allowance across the land portions; adjust for hotel breakfast | 2,400,000 |
| Five listed admissions | 2 × (70,000 + 50,000 + 300,000 + 20,000 + 150,000) | 1,180,000 |
| Subtotal | Before contingency | 21,480,000 |
| Contingency | Rounded reserve for changes and small overruns | 2,200,000 |
| Example total | VND 11,840,000 per adult when shared equally | 23,680,000 |
The admission calculation covers the Temple of Literature, Hoa Lo, Trang An, Hoa Lu and optional Hang Mua. It excludes any additional museum, evening show or separately charged activity. Recheck the listed fees and eligibility for concessions before travelling.[2][3][4]
Replace the hotel, cruise and transfer allowances with like-for-like quotes before relying on the total. Avoid counting a shuttle twice if it is already included in the cruise price, and add a Ninh Binh pickup supplement if needed. International flights, entry costs where applicable, insurance, paid drinks, shopping and a data plan are outside this model.
The most useful sensitivity check is simple: spending VND 300,000 more per room for each of the five hotel nights adds VND 1,500,000 to the pair’s total, or VND 750,000 each. A cruise upgrade of VND 1,000,000 per person adds VND 2,000,000 to the pair’s total. Decide which improvement matters before searching for small savings elsewhere.
Book the fixed connections first
- Confirm arrival and departure dates in local time, including the six actual overnight dates.
- Choose the cruise route, vessel and cabin; check its weather and cancellation terms.
- Obtain a workable Ninh Binh pickup and the correct port connection in writing, plus the return to Hanoi.
- Reserve Hanoi nights 1–2 and 6, then Ninh Binh nights 3–4. Two separate reservations at the same Hanoi hotel can simplify the return.
- Arrange Hanoi–Ninh Binh transport, airport rides and any specific evening booking. Leave the arrival day and cruise-return afternoon flexible.
Keep offline copies of the hotel names in Vietnamese, map pins, port instructions and emergency contacts. Mobile data is useful for pickup changes and translation, but save essential information before leaving Wi-Fi.
Browse Airalo and select a Vietnam data plan if an eSIM suits your phone. Vietnam plans are listed by the provider; check your device’s eSIM support, carrier-unlocked status, allowance, activation policy and validity before purchase.[12][13] This is a general Airalo link, not a preselected seven-day package or a promise of signal everywhere.
Use the site’s Trip Itinerary Planner to organise the six nights and keep the route together. It does not validate timetables, availability or cruise connections. The Vietnam travel hub provides the wider country structure if this week is part of a longer trip.
Frequently asked questions
What if I prefer to avoid the direct Ninh Binh-to-bay connection?
Use Hanoi for the first two nights, an overnight cruise for night 3, Hanoi for night 4, Ninh Binh for night 5 and Hanoi for night 6. This adds an extra hotel move and reduces the countryside stay to one night. It can suit a cruise package built around Hanoi transfers, but the original route is more relaxed when the direct transfer is confirmed.
Should I leave my large suitcase in Hanoi?
Only with the hotel’s explicit agreement about storage, security and collection on Day 6. You will be away for three nights, so check what luggage the road vehicle and cruise accept. Carry identification, medication and valuables with you rather than leaving them in stored bags.
Is this suitable for children or travellers who find steps difficult?
The nights pattern can work, but the standard sightseeing choices need adapting. Omit the Hang Mua climb, shorten the city walks and ask the cruise about gangways, tender boarding, cabin access, lifejackets and the option to remain aboard during excursions. A general family-friendly label does not establish step-free access.
Choose a northern week with room to breathe
Choose this route when the three experiences matter equally: a proper Hanoi day, a countryside stay and an overnight cruise. Confirm Day 5 first, book the six nights around it, and keep Day 6 afternoon free. Those decisions make the week more useful than adding another stop to the map.
